Fandom Island Museum, Thursday Daytime
First day on the new job was, Steven felt, very exciting. The Fandom Island Museum didn't have an Egyptian section but the sections dedicated to fish, bugs, art, and Fandom history were still quite nice, really.
None of that was his area of expertise, to be sure. Luckily Blathers had provided a guidebook to help Steven get up to speed while his new boss slept through the day.
It was a very thick guidebook. Labeled Volume 1. Blathers liked to write as much as he cared to chat, apparently.
Steven made sure all the brochures and maps were properly tidy, put on his name tag, and settled in behind the Welcome desk with his new reading matter. He had no idea if anyone might stop by but it was clear he'd have plenty to keep him occupied regardless.

He hadn't been too successful between the mix of jet lag and excitement over his new job and assignment. And so, as soon as the museum opened, Connor was walking in through the door, stopping to look around and give an appreciative whistle.
"Pretty impressive for such a small place, eh?" he asked Rex, who was perched on his shoulder and seemed to be looking around with interest as well.
A moment or two later, Connor was walking up to the front desk.
"Good mornin' mate" he said with a grin. "Was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a Blathers, by chance?"
no subject
"He's, ah, asleep at the moment," Steven said. "Is there something I could help you with?"

"And this here is Rex" he said nodding towards the dragon-like creature on his shoulders.
"Hope it's ok I brought him with me. Didn't seem fair to leave him caged up in a strange hotel on our first full day here."

Connor laughed as he spoke. "Sort of. Rex here is a coelurosauravus, a type of flying dinosaur from the Late Permian period."
Connor made himself stop there, knowing that not everyone was a huge dino and science nerd like he was.

"Hello, Rex." To Connor, Steven said. "Dinosaurs? Suppose you'll fit in all right on the island there. Anyone told you about the area's... unique qualities?"
no subject
"I've heard some stories and rumors about things around here. Not sure how much truth there are to them..." Connor admitted. "But that's what I'm here to do. Back home, my team investigated strange anomalies and creatures. Curious to see how unique this place is, as you put it."
He paused for a moment, watching Rex and then turned his attention back to Steven. "What kind of things have you heard about so far?"
no subject
"Oh! Well. For starters it's 2022. I suppose if you do work with different time periods that might not surprise you as much. Then there's all sorts of different types here. Vampires, Lucifer, people sworn to be the avatar of Egyptian gods."
Steven threw that last one out casually. If he and Connor were going to be working together it was probably wise to start preparing him for any strangeness Konshu might try.

Irene was right, there were things you said in Fandom that you never said in your life before.

His brain then caught to something Steven had said just a moment ago.
"What was that, about Egyptian gods and such?"

Something belatedly occurred to Steven to mention. "Also Blathers is a talking owl. Not sure if that came up in your phone conversation so word to the wise there."

"But this place though" he said looking around the lobby area again. "This is impressive for such a small island. What all do we have here to take care of so far?"

Rex replied with an indignant sounding chirp and what almost looked like an insulted look.

There was a slight pause before he continued. "So what about you? What brought you out here to this out of the way place? You said you used to work at a museum, right?"

Sorry Steven, Connor was very much going to assume you were talking about moving in with your girlfriend. Or boyfriend- no judgement on his end!
"Don't see many houses and such around here. Assuming it's just the apartment complexes then is it?"
no subject
"Thanks. It's new. We're figuring it out. And yeah, the apartments. There's still flats available where we are. It's the building right by the causeway, easy to find."

Exciting proposition? Terrifying? Only time would tell really.

Oh Steven, you just made one science geek very happy right now.

"So...." Connor said as he glanced over at Rex who was exploring the top of one of the shelves. "Anything I should do or work on before me first official shift next week?"

Given the thickness of Volume One in front of Steven it was possible that Blathers had quite literally written everything in the world down.
