Big week for Annie.

New hair (even if the difference from 'dirty blonde' to 'golden blonde' was pretty minor.) Horrible new shenanigan shirt. A messed-up work schedule that had her leaving again after her shift tonight to go back to New York so that she could be back in time to support the Fandom PD on Saturday at a very normal picnic that was not competitive at all.

Oh, and she had some new jewelry. That was kind of a big deal.

Needless to say, Annie was in a fantastic mood at the bar tonight, even if Tiny had, weirdly, not really cared to see her ring????? Um, rude, Tiny, had you never congratulated a coworker on her engagement before? There was, like, an order to this.

But she did appreciate that it looked like the shirtless thing was sticking around, and at least it was finally seasonally-appropriate and she didn't have to worry about anyone catching cold, Gladio.

Rey already tried to make it in here when she could, but she'd heard radio.

"Another boring week, hmm?"

"Oh, totally boring," Annie agreed, though despite the sarcasm she was totally unable to keep her grin in check. "Barely anything exciting happened."

Okay, that was a lie even aside from her engagement. There had been a kraken drill, for crying out loud.

Also, that ring she was wearing on her left hand as she pointedly splayed her hands out on the bar for no reason was, you know. A touch showy.

"Absolutely not," Rey said, smiling as she peered at the ring. Not because she knew the standard gush-over-the-ring protocol but because it was hard to miss it. "Congratulations. I'm so happy for you."

"Thank you," Annie replied, absolutely beaming and all but modeling the ring. "He hid it, Rey. I had to go on a whole scavenger hunt."

A pause.

"That's not normal for proposals, just so you know."

"And you liked that?" Rey checked, because it sounded like something that could go either way depending on the person.

"Oh, I loved that," Annie confirmed, nodding. "He even hid ten decoy boxes to throw me off. Took all weekend to find the right one."

And on the bright side, their apartment had never been better organized than it was now, since she had torn it apart looking for boxes and they'd had to put it all back together again.

"Did you manage to do anything else the whole weekend?" Rey asked, amused.

"I had to work on Memorial Day," Annie admitted, looking frustrated about that still, "but other than that? Uh, we slept. At one point we ordered pizza and I ate it while pawing through our freezer. It ended up being in the first aid kit, in the end."

"I'm glad you had fun with it," Rey grinned. "So when are you actually doing this? Do you know yet?"

"We super-duper have not set a date yet," Annie replied, shaking her head. "I haven't even officially told my work yet, 'cause that's gonna be a whole thing. But probably later this year? Maybe early next year, though I kind of like the idea of doing it in the fall."

It was kind of an important time of year for them, historically speaking.

"That both seems really soon and far away," Rey said.

"It's totally both," Annie agreed, "though I think it's gonna take awhile to plan this wedding. He has a huge family, I'm gonna have to fight my mom and work, and I think a lot goes into a wedding normally anyway."

But this one in particular had a lot of moving parts.

"Do you think you might want to be a bridesmaid?" she added, a little shy about asking. (And also already primed to explain what the hell that was, in case Rey did not know.)

"Of course!" Rey said, excited. "I have no idea what they actually do, but yes!"

Her entire experience with weddings were Jaina's, or what she'd seen on TV, so mostly they seemed to stand there in bad dresses and maybe hats.

And she was still willing to do that for you, Annie.

"Honestly, not much," Annie assured her, clearly delighted that she'd said yes. "The maid of honor has a bunch of responsibilities, but that's gonna be Maeve, I think. But you, Summer and Diego's sisters just get to, like, wear dresses and carry flowers. I might ask you to hold some index cards at one point, maybe. Big pressure."

Annie, naturally, had no idea, but there were going to be some big changes to that proposed wedding party.

"I'm pretty sure I can do all of those things," Rey assured her.

Was Danny bringing around the ridiculous flyers that Steve had once again 'fixed' to proclaim that the Trooper Station was the superior emergency service on the island? Yes.

Because it prevented him from arguing with Steve that mahi mahi wasn't worth being shipped overnight from the west coast for a company picnic.

"Hey, you changed your hair." Of course he'd pick up on that.

"What are those?" Rey wondered, nodding towards the flyers.

"Flyers for a party on Saturday," Danny said, offering her one. Now it couldn't be said that he didn't sell it.

She took the flyer to look it over.

"All right, this looks interesting," she said, amused.

"Come on out, support the bustling Fire Department and Trooper Station," he said dryly. "It'll be fun at the very least."

"I will," she said. "Expert salesmanship there."

"Make sure to share that at the picnic in case anyone says otherwise," Danny replied cheerfully.

Steve. He meant Steve.

"Got anyone in mind that will?" she had to ask.

"McGarrett. Tall, tattoos. Will probably be shirtless because he's insane." Did that description help at all?

"The man who threw a rope onto my balcony to rappel? I believe it," she told him.

"That's Steve," Danny said with a sigh. And love. Annoyed love.

"All right, I will specifically tell him that you did a good job," Rey promised.

"Thank you," Danny replied. "And don't let him try to say I bribed you. I did this fair and square."

"All right. Though now I think I should have asked for bribes," Rey said.

Fortunately, Annie had no strong feelings about mahi mahi -- any fish, really -- but she did absolutely welcome the presence of those flyers. Hey, she was like...a Trooper Station-in-law, or something, right?

"I did," she agreed, shaking said hair a little and reaching up to play with it with her left hand. Noooo reason at all, noooothing to see there. "Or, well, work asked me to. It's a compromise to keep me out of a wig."

"And quite a rock on your finger," he added at that very subtle movement.

"Oh, this old thing?" Annie asked, though the way she immediately blushed and smiled totally belied that faux-casualness. "He did a good job, right?"

You were getting the whole outstretched-hand-admire-my-ring thing, now, Danny.

"It sure is a ring," Danny said, looking at that thing with all the due attention.

He'd had to buy his ex's ring on a beat cop's budget, so it was nowhere near like this.

Annie looked a touch hurt at the reaction, but moved on quickly. It was a lot of ring, and she knew it. "He made me go on a scavenger hunt to find it."

"Like, with clues?" Because that sounded pretty cute. No one tell Steve, he'd end up in a scavenger hunt for something ridiculous.

"No clues except that it was somewhere in our apartment," Annie supplied, shaking her head. "And he hid ten decoy boxes, too, just to throw me off. Took me all weekend."

"How torn apart is the place?" Danny asked with a laugh.

"It's back together now!" Annie assured him. "But like...very. Very, very. He put one in an air return vent, Danny."

So, like, the apartment had been so torn apart that at one point Annie had involved tools to remove fixtures.

"I live with a guy who has guns hidden in the couch cushions," Danny reminded her. "Did he just watch you tear everything up? Because would have ended up throwing stuff at him."

"Oh, yeah," Annie said, nodding easily. "And he wouldn't give me any hints. I got kind of a vague one at the end after I found the tenth decoy. But to his credit, he totally helped me clean up."

Which was the important part, really.

"Oh, no, the clean up shoulda been all on him," Danny replied. "But congratulations. You talked about a date yet?"

"Probably fall?" Annie said, shrugging a shoulder. "No sooner than fall, at least. I have to figure things out with work -- we're not public yet, and we'll have to be. And my mom's throwing a fit 'cause I already told her I don't want a full wedding Mass."

Wait until she broke the news that Diego wasn't even baptized and had no interest in changing that fact.

"Just tell 'em he's a Protestant." Daniel Williams, that wasn't nice at all.
