Devil's Nest | Thursday Evening

Thanks to her tour of the American Hero mansion running longer than expected -- who could have seen that one coming? -- Annie was racing off set without enough time to get back to her apartment to change before her portal, and subsequently, her shift at the bar. Once they started actually filming, she'd have a trailer, but in the meantime....

In the meantime, it looked like she was bartending in her cape this week.

Someone was, perhaps, a little concerned about spilling on her all-white uniform. (Which was also why she was giving both the piano and the axe range a wider berth than usual.)

"Oooh Starlight is working behind the bar tonight," Diego teased as he sat down. "Nice."

"For one night only," Annie replied dramatically, giving him some sarcastic jazz hands and a fond smile. "They kept me late to tour the mansion."

Which was ridiculous. An actual reality show mansion, which meant Annie now had a good hour-long commute from the tower to get out of the city when she had to film American Hero, because god forbid they just shoot it in midtown.

"And what's the point of the mansion?" Diego asked. "Just to show Vought has money? We already knew that."

"Oh, no, it's mostly so the contestants all have to live together," Annie explained. "So that that's part of the show, too -- like, did they get along? Who fought? Who made friends? Who hooked up?"

All of this was delivered in a sort of hushed, scandalized, reality-show promoting kind of tone, but those last two words were also treated to a suggestive raise of Annie's brows before she rolled her eyes.

"So what you're saying is, I can just watch the parts you're in." Reality shows weren't his thing, but he was a supportive fiancée.

"You don't even have to watch that much," Annie assured him. "It's not going to get interesting until we've been filming for a month and I have a better idea of who's gonna get the actual spots on the team, anyway. And I know at least one person they're thinking of casting, so that's kinda nice."

And then, because Annie was, like, the best bartender, she remembered to ask, "Do you want a beer? Or one of those?" with a vague wave towards the specials.

"I'll take a beer. Kind of would like to walk home tonight without assistance." He knew your heavy hand, Annie.

"Who do you know?"

"Supersonic," Annie offered casually as she went to pour that beer for him. This really wasn't a big deal, and yet she kind of felt like Diego should be kept in the loop. "I know him from my Capes for Christ days. We also dated for awhile."

And honestly, it was kind of embarrassing to look back on, considering where everyone's respective careers had been five years ago.

"He wasn't the one that screwed you over, right?" Because that would make a big difference in how Diego reacted to this.

"That's Drummer Boy," Annie corrected, sliding over his beer. A totally different ex with a similarly sound-based name! Don't worry about it! "Supersonic's a little more recent -- I was like, eighteen, nineteen when we were together? You'd like him, though. He went through a similar, like, embarrassing teen heartthrob superhero thing as you did."

They could bond over their Tiger Beat covers.

"I feel bad for him already," Diego joked. Honestly he did feel kind of bad for anyone auditioning to be in the Seven, but hopefully Annie would be able to find people who aren't horrible to balance out the super-horrible people already on the team.

"They aren't worried about any biases on your end?" Diego asked. "Or is that, like, part of the drama."

"It's cute you think I actually have any say in who moves on in the competition," Annie snorted, getting a beer for herself. (A nice pale blonde one, because again, spill worries.) "But I'm sure they'll do something with it if they cast him. Hopefully less once we've announced you."

Which was something she was working on with much more interest than the casting of her reality competition show, since taking their relationship public was going to take, like, surgical delicacy and a lot of boundary-setting on her part.

Diego took a big swig of his beer because, yeah, that was an entire thing. "Maybe new members of the Seven will distract from that?"

Ahahahaha no.

"We should probably actually try to get ahead of the whole new member thing," Annie replied gently, reaching for his hand across the bar. "If we wait too long, it'll probably be worse 'cause they'll...like, want me to bring you out on the show or something. That would be very Vought, to use our engagement to try to boost ratings."

"That tracks," he said, taking her hand. "It's been awhile for me. Not sure what to expect. And when I was doing it social media wasn't a thing."

"I mean, I don't even run my own accounts, but I'll make sure those are on lockdown with stuff that's only approved by both of us," Annie promised, smiling a little. "Whatever we do, it's gonna be a big deal. It's kind of unavoidable. But I have a few options where we can kind of...mitigate how big a deal it is to us, personally. You know?"

She meant him, more than us. It was going to be the focus of her press until something bigger came along, probably.

Diego nodded, giving her hand a squeeze. "I'll follow your lead. Maybe it'll be like riding a bike and it'll all come back to me?"

"Well, and, like...it doesn't have to?" Annie offered, shrugging a shoulder. "I'm good with whatever you're comfortable with. I just want to make sure we announce this on our own terms, before Vought can totally make it their thing, instead."

Her eyes lit up -- not literally -- with an idea. "We should come up with a press code word. Like, something you can say if we need to get off a red carpet or you need me to rescue you from a camera or something."

Diego laughed. "What, my look of discomfort and possibly horror won't be enough of a hint?"

"I'm kind of expecting that to be...like, the default," Annie admitted with a little wince. "I'm gonna do my best to ensure you don't get approached solo, like, ever? Would that be a good start?"

It would likely prove to be a completely futile effort, but Annie was more than willing to try, at least!

"That's probably for the best," he said with a nod. "I don't want to embarrass you with my lack of PR training either."
