Turtle & Canary; Monday [07/18].
It was always just a little bit worrisome when Summer came into the store on a Monday and Apu was just sweeping the floor or stocking or going about something completely mundane instead of setting up some elaborate thing in celebration of some completely made-up sounding holiday. A little. Sometimes, you know, the inspiration just wasn't there. And today felt like one of those days, but with a slight touch of something else that made it slightly more worrisome. The man seemed a little down due to this lack of inspiration, and Summer felt she should try to lift his spirits a little.
"Heyyyy, Apuuuu," she ventured. "How's it gooooing? I was thinking, hey, you know, it's looking a little sparse up front by the register, you think you want to put up a display? Maybe a nice can tower? We did get in some canned bread! That could be fun! Or some of that smoked rattlesnake? Always a big hit. Or, hey, it's summer, right? Who's not going to love those cheeseburgers in a can, huh? Maybe? No? Okay, then...."
The cheese panda must have overheard the conversation, though, because when Summer got back to the counter, she found him there, already taking the initiative to set up a nice tower of various canned cheeses in the meantime, and, once he was finished, apparently planned on standing menacingly beside it. To prevent people from messing with it? To glare at people until they bought some? Summer didn't know, but she did know she regretted saying anything and fully planned to just leave things alone next time.

“Hi,” she said when she entered and found herself tilting her head curiously at the tower of canned cheeses.
no subject
In fact, Summer was going to move out from behind the counter now to enact an intercept by joining Liz and casually angling her away from the cheese tower.
"Also," she added, "hi, Liz, how's it going?"
no subject
She paused, “I’ve been feeling a bit tired lately but otherwise I’m okay,” Liz told her, “I thought I’d look into getting supplies to learning how to knit, it was one of Dr. Lecter’s suggestions to help, I’ve never actually tried knitting before,” she admitted.
no subject
And she felt pretty confident that Dr. Lecter would agree with her on that point.
But the rest of that now gave Summer a direction in which to deflect Liz toward, and so look at that! Conveniently heading toward the art supply aisle now!
"I mean," she said, "knitting definitely has had a moment, there's no lack of how-tos on knitting out there. Probably whole swatches of YouTube dedicated to it, and plenty of supplies here. That's not a bad idea at all."
no subject
“I was watching a few tutorials yesterday to start seeing what they’d be like but I think it'll be nice to try something different, maybe I can pick it up as a hobby,” Liz said, “but hopefully I won’t be terrible at it, I - I like the idea of being able to knit something for my daughter,”
She felt like she was never going to get used to saying that, that she was going to be having a daughter.

"Ohmygod," she added, "if you aren't terrible at it, I bet you could make, like, the cutest little things for her, too. Adorable little hats and booties. And if you're actually good at it, maybe you could even make me something for my cat."
Was Summer going to be worried about the fact that, when talking to someone about knitting baby accessories, her brain instantly jumped to her cat?
Yes. Yes she was.
But it would take her a moment to get there.

Still...
"You could totally knit them all matching sweaters," she said.
Yes. The cats and the baby. Although that just made her think...
"How do you think Rain'll handle having the baby around?" she asked. "You think she'll be jealous at all?"
Summer was 110% convinced that Pancakes would literally try to murder a baby if given half a chance.

Liz then considered Summer’s question, which was something that she had been wondering about. She knew Rain was suspecting something was happening, considering she wasn’t living at their apartment at the moment.
“I … I don’t know how Rain will take it,” Liz admitted, “I mean she loves being with other cats and other adults but I do think she may be jealous of the baby when she’s born, I don’t think she’ll understand why she’s not getting all the attention,”
no subject
"But, yeah. If Rain starts totally giving that kid the stink-eye for having the audacity to exist in the same space as her, know that I will be more than happy to bring cat reinforcements so she doesn't feel too shoved to the side for something with a stronger genetic and specierial bond. But hopefully, it won't be an issue and she'll totally love the kid."
A pause.
"I mean, doubtful, because cat, but I've seen plenty of videos online of cats totally taking to babies in adorable yet mildly concerning ways, too."
no subject
“I’m really hoping that Rain will love her as well,” she added, “I mean maybe it will be like those videos and I’ll be able to get cute photos of them together and not have to worry about Rain not getting along with her but …maybe just in case have extra cat reinforcements ready to go?”
Liz was really hoping that it wasn’t going to be something else she was going to have to worry about, trying to appease Rain with all these changes that were happening.

It wouldn't hurt right, to start bribing Rain now just in case?
no subject
Then she snorted.
"What if it turns out she's actually better at it than you?"
A cat who knits would be so hot on TikTok, Liz.
no subject
There was going to be so much yarn bought, whether most of it was going to Rain to play with remained to be seen.
She smiled at that last bit, “well Rain is Hellboy’s cat … it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if she would be better at knitting than I was,” she admitted.
Liz did not know what TikTok was, someone should definitely introduce her to it.
no subject
"Please tell me you're saying that because Hellboy already knits and it, like, stupid goof at it."
No, that wasn't really how skills and talents worked, but come on. Summer was a sucker for an absurd premise.
no subject
Liz liked to imagine after all these years of knowing Hellboy that she would know if he could do something like knit.
“His cats are always getting into all kinds of mischief though, their favourite target is Agent Mannings quarters,” she paused, “I mean Hellboy does claim they get in on their own but I do think they have a bit of help though,” she added with a grin.

"Although," she added, a moment later, "that does make me wonder if you need to go through extra lengths to cat-proof the baby's room now."

It was definitely not something she ever thought she was going to say.

"Hey Summer," he said with a slight nod. "How's it going?"
no subject
"Not too bad," she said, then hitched her thumb off to the side a little. "Got those cloves in stock now, by the way. Hopefully, if they're not exactly the right ones, they're close enough that it doesn't matter."

"Happy to help!" she assured him brightly, and it was true! So far! We'll see if anything ended up biting her in the ass on that one. "And how've you been,Billy? Any exciting adventures on porg surfing?"
no subject
"Other than that, been working on fine-tuning some of the holo-suite programs" he continued after a pause. "Got a couple ones finished and ready to go. Already been able to test one of them out to good a review."
no subject
Give me the sales pitch, tell me why I should haul my ass over to your shop for fake surfing."
no subject
"And I guess the best thing about the holo-suite lessons is they are great for beginners since they get the feel for surfing in pretty much 90% real conditions, without the risks of ya know drowning and such. The simulations can also be customized, to an extent, to a setting and conditions that the individual wants."
Yeah, he sucked at promos and sale pitches.

She did have cute porgs failing to surf videos, though, so that kind of made anything better.
"Can the porgs go into the sims, too?" she wondered, asking the clearly important questions as she handedthe phone back.

And that was it. That was the whole response. You pretty much lost her at the porg-specific shallow water wave pool, because now she was picturing it and was kind of in love with it now, Billy.
"I really do have to try and stop by sometime."
