Luke's Diner, Saturday

[what_the_shock]

Miguel still had plenty of packing to do, but meh, he'd do it tomorrow morning. Today he had work, which meant plenty of coffee. (Look, it wasn't the only reason he showed up, but it was definitely a perk. Ha.)

The cook was busy already when he got there, and the specials board had been made. Miguel stared at it for a minute. "You know we're going to France tomorrow."

"You might be," the cook answered grumpily. "The rest of us have to make do."

Miguel shrugged. "Fair enough."

It had been far too long since Dwight had stopped by to pay his friend a visit. And even with them being neighbors in a small town, their paths hadn't seemed to cross all that much lately. So, Dwight made it a point to stop by the diner when he took a break for lunch.

"Hey stranger," he said with a grin as he walked in. "Getting in the mood for the school trip I see!"

"Don't look at me," Miguel said, shrugging. He got out a mug and poured Dwight a cup of coffee. "Someone's salty they're not going, apparently."

The cook pointedly ignored them.

Miguel slid the coffee toward Dwight. "How have you been?"

"I'll have to be sure to stop by and pay him a visit while ya'll are gone so he doesn't feel too abandoned," Dwight said with a laugh.

He gave Miguel a nod of thanks for the coffee. "Things are good though, keeping busy. What about you? Got epic plans to go web-swinging all around Paris?" he asked with a smirk.

"I guess we'll see," Miguel said, grinning. "Maybe I'll really sweep Rosa off her feet."

He would not. He liked all his limbs attached.

"You will have to let me know how that goes" Dwight snorted, having a pretty good idea of just how well that would likely go if Miguel actually attempted it.

"I'll record it," Miguel promised. "You having food today?"

[alwaysonguard]

"Let's go with the Crêpes Suzette," Dwight said after considering the specials for a moment. "Just cuz I am sticking around here doesn't mean I can't have a taste of that good French cuisine right? It does sound like it's another interesting trip they got lined up this time though!"

"Should be interesting," Miguel said. "I've never been to Paris, or on a cruise." He put Dwight's order in. "Should I bring you back some bread?"

"Eh, some cheese might be nice," Dwight said with a laugh. "Cruises are nice, just ya know, try not to get seasick. Provided... you can even get sick like that?"

[what_the_shock]

"Cheese, got it." Miguel shrugged. "Probably? It's not actually an illness, just an imbalance in the inner ear. I never have, though."

[alwaysonguard]

"Yeah and I'm sure if swinging around from high-rises doesn't do it you will be fine on a boat." Dwight gave a shrug. "Guess you'll know for sure soon enough huh?"

"Yep." Miguel shrugged. "I'm not too worried. So what are you up to while the island is quiet?"

[alwaysonguard]

"I will hopefully be finishing up some personal projects at the shop," Dwight said with a shrug. "Main reason I'm not going is I'm waiting on some important papers, and knowing my luck, they would come day one of the trip. And I'd rather not have the...adoption papers sitting around like that." Dwight gave a glance towards Miguel to see his reaction since this was the first time he had mentioned those plans out loud.

Miguel blinked. "Adoption? Like, a kid?"

[alwaysonguard]

"Yeah. As in a kid,"Dwight said with a grin. "Been thinking about it for a while... started the paperwork a while back."

He paused a moment and took a drink of the coffee before continuing.

"Think it's fairly obvious a 'traditional' family isn't in the cards for me so, this seems like the best option. "

"If you have to have a kid, yeah." Look, his feelings on family were complicated. "You sure?"

[alwaysonguard]

"Sure that I'm tired of being alone and want a family, yeah," Dwight said simply and honestly. "I know it doesn't make sense likey, but... yeah I'm sure."

"Yeah, but do you want a kid?" Miguel stressed. "I can find you a date with a lot less stress."

[alwaysonguard]

"I do. I loved being a dad to Lizzy. I miss it, and if I can have a family, and help a kid in need at the same time, I can't think of anything I'd want more" Dwight said seriously. "I want to be a dad again even if I can't have a kid of my own. And after my old man found out and read me the riot act about it, I think it's safe to say I know I want this... provided the red tape ever ends and it actually happens."

Yeah, okay, that sounded like better reasons.

"Hey, good luck with that, then." Miguel shrugged and went back to drinking his own coffee. "And shock your old man."
