Vi still didn't really get the holiday, though she appreciated the free candy, but that didn't really matter, because the was set up to more than made up for it, with all the selections of spooky, scary games set up on display and out in the play area. There were packs of appropriately themed dice and dishes of edible dice scattered about the place (please don't get them confused), as well as more normal candy too. Little Bot's pirate costume was covered in fake cobwebs, trailing behind as he zipped around the store.

And of course, Saffron was still cursed.

Steph had been in her regular clothes when she went into the office, but when she emerged from it late in the morning she was in full wizard's robes complete with a gaudy pointy hat and a staff with an orb to ponder, of course atop it.

"And now," she said dramatically, "I'm properly equipped to give out candy if people come by."

You might argue that she didn't need to be dressed up to be the one giving out the candy, but only if you hadn't met her.

Vi was fairly certain she should not have found that outfit hot at all, but somehow...

"So you're giving out your candy to everyone now?," she asked, completely innocent.

The narrative wasn't going to judge Vi for that. Yet, since Steph's ridiculous fake beard hadn't made its appearance.

"Aw, are you jealous?" Steph asked -- lightly, since she didn't think it was a legitimate concern in this case.

The beard might be a deal breaker. Might.

"Oh, totally." She wasn't. "First it's the candy, and who know what comes next."

It was totally valid as a dealbreaker, because it was beyond ridiculous. The robes did look damn good on her, though, if she did say so herself.

"I might even let people pick stuff out of the loose dice bin," she said dramatically.

Or just straight up give them a set if they were as adorable as Lexi.

Vi gasped, dramatically. "Not the loose dice!"

Steph grinned mischievously, leaned the staff against the counter, and started advancing on Vi with both hands out and half-curled into claws.

"Scary, isn't it?"

"Terrifying." So terrifying that Vi was having trouble not giggling.

A very convincing argument against Steph letting people at the loose dice bin for trick-or-treating, truly.

"More or less terrifying than the spiders falling from the sky?" she asked, and pounced for a hug.

They were plastic spiders, Steph.

Oh no, being hug-pounced, was there any worse a fate?

"Worse, definitely worse," Vi replied, clinging to Steph in what was definitely fear, because, yeah, plastic spiders.

So much fear, Steph could tell.

"Worry not, my lady," she said dramatically, more or less right beside Vi's ear. "I shall protect you from the dread trick-or-treaters."

"You promise?" Vi said, at least trying to sound scared. The not-so-faked shiver possibly helped?

"Always," Steph said, maybe a little more fiercely than the playful conversation warranted.

The shiver definitely helped.

Good, because Vi was definitely shivering again. "Good," she said, grinning at Steph.

And Steph was definitely taking note of it.

"I'm not letting you have a monopoly on all the knight in shining armor-ing in this relationship," she said, not actually teasing much as she grinned up at Vi.

Her ridiculous hat chose that moment to slide backwards and topple onto the floor.

Vi laughed, but the majority of her attention was definitely not on Steph's hat.

"I love that about you," she said, soft and earnest. "Because you do make me feel safe."

"Good, since I want you to be," Steph told her. "Not to say I want you to only feel safe with me -- you fucking deserve all the places in the world where you can feel safe -- but I always want to be one of those places for you."

Besides, she knew that the world unfortunately wasn't fair enough to give Vi as many safe places as she deserved.

Now that her hat wasn't in the way, she rested her head against Vi's shoulder. "And that's definitely mutual. I feel safer with you than I have in a long-ass time."

Vi tilted her head so she could kiss Steph's temple.

"You deserve that too," she said. "So I'm want to make sure that's never gonna change."

"Never, huh?" Steph wasn't letting herself read too much into that yet, but she sounded pleased all the same. She wrapped her arms around Vi's waist and tried to pull her closer. "Sounds good. I'm in."

Vi, weirdly enough, had very few problems will being pulled in against Steph. "Never," she repeated, with a grin. "All the way?"

"I mean, I think you and I make a pretty damn good team," Steph replied. "So yeah. I am all the way in and then some."

Did she maybe waggle her eyebrows just a bit? Well, yeah.

Vi's grin turned into a smirk. "You want to prove it later?"

Steph huffed a laugh and unwound an arm from around Vi so she could touch two fingertips to her temple.

"A moment while I divine an answer... yes, yes, I can see it now. Once the trick-or-treating is over and done, there are some special treats, plural, waiting for you."

Vi leaned in to kiss her. "I can hardly wait."

When Steph finally broke off the kiss and replied, her voice was loaded with eagerness and mischief. "Me neither, but we're just going to have to get through the rest of the day first. Possibly with a lot of candy."

"Quite a lot," Vi agreed, reaching for a die-shaped lollipop, sticking it in her mouth with a look of utter innocence.

Steph had done this to herself, really.

"You and your attractive smartassery," she complained playfully, all too aware that her cheeks had turned slightly pink.

Vi grinned around the lollipop, and didn't sound at all contrite as she asked "What are you going to do me and my ass?"

Steph grinned at her with equally unrepentant smugness.

"That, my love, is a surprise for later tonight," she said in her goofy wizard voice before reverting back to her own and continuing cheerfully, "Guess you're just going to have to drive yourself crazy wondering in the meantime, huh?"

"I could do that," Vi agreed, leaning in to whisper in her ear. "Or I could come up with some ideas of my own."

Guess whose turn it was to shiver now?

"I'm definitely open to suggestions," Steph murmured.

Vi grinned at her, bright and beaming. "It's a date then."

Steph grinned right back. "And that is one of the most powerful magic phrases I can think of." She struck a dramatic pose. "I am an expert on spells, my lady, and I assure you that I am under yours."
