The Preserve- Saturday Morning
The past few days had been busy for Connor... mostly because Cutter was still a cat and still being stubborn and demanding, as cats are. Connor didn't mind the demands for tummy rubs and head scritches, and even the pickiness over what food cat!Cutter finally decided he would actually eat wasn't too bad. But the 3 am zoomies were a bit much, especially since they tended to get Rexy all riled up and excited too.
That had been the case this morning as well, so after a very early wake-up and about an hour trying to keep them from destroying the apartment with their sudden spike of playfulness, Connor was very much awake. So, after settling them down with breakfast and trying to explain to cat!Cutter the risk of letting him out of the apartment was just too great so no, he was not coming with him, Connor finally made it out of the apartment.
The sun was just coming up as he left the apartments and made his way to the preserve. In the bag slung over his shoulder was the Anomaly Detection Device, a few other instruments, his notepad, laptop, and a few other things. Connor planned to make the most of the early morning and attempt a couple of those experiments Michael and he had talked about a while back. Though, Connor was a bit distracted thinking back to the other day as he searched for the best place to get set up.
To most "normal" people, making out in a junkyard in an old airstream for the afternoon might not be a grand time. But Connor wasn't most people and Michael was definitely far from most normal people... and Connor was exceptionally glad for that. Even if it was making him a little distracted as he got set up and started.
(post is open and the preserve is here for all your wilderness needs as well!)

But, hey, she did show up with coffee? That was something, righr?
She also showed up via portal, because that was much cooler and topical!
Except that Connor hadn't mentioned where exactly in the preserve he was running these little experiments, so it took a few tried before she finally managed to pop out somewhere that he was.
"There you are!" she noted, stepping through the very very pink and not at all suggestive portal, how dare you, and spotted him.

As Connor picked up the device and started to walk around the small clearing he was in, the above mentioned pink and yes suggestive looking portal (sorry Summer the truth was the truth) appeared out of nowhere. He stared in surprise for a moment and then eyes went even wider when Summer stepped out.
"Ok THAT is bloody cool," he said in awe. And after a bit, when he could stop gawking for a moment he turned to look at Summer. "Glad you could make it, Summer!"

She then held up the miraculously unspilled tray of drinks in her other hand. "ALso, I got coffee," she said, because it was still wayyy too early, ohmygod. "I didn't know how you like it, so I just got black and, like, we can literally just portal back to the Perk for cream and sugar if it's that big of a deal or whatever."
no subject
"So, that's the infamous portal gun I have heard so much about," he said as he took a drink of the coffee, eyes drifting to the rather impressive-looking piece of tech. "I thought the tech I developed was impressive," he said with a nod to the detector in his hand, "But that just blows everything else out of the water!"

She turned it in her hand so that the handle was facing Connor as she held it out.
"Want a closer look? But please note, if you even try to skip out of this dimension and run off with it it, I will track you down, stab your face, and possibly also take one of your kidneys, too, while I'm at it."
So, you know. He'd been forewarned.

Connor examined the gun carefully for a few minutes, shaking his head in amazement as he did.
"Back home the anomalies would open fairly randomly on their own. We never even considered the possibility that they could be controlled... at least not to this extent. We had figured a way to sort of detect when they were opened and to predict where ones were likely to emerge. But this... this is just brilliant!"

"He does sort of have a monopoly on interdimensional travel in my dimension, though," she added. "So he's got a whole god complex about it. Man, did it feel good rubbing Portalocity in his face every time I went home, and now, obviously, I've got my own gun, so you know that really chaps his ass."
It really actually didn't. Not that much, anyway. In fact, Rick just knew where to find a convenient back-up now, more than anything else.
no subject
"BUt this..." he said pulling the attention backto the portal gun, "is amazing! So you can control where this connects to? Like time, location, reality version?"
no subject
"Time's a little tricky," Summer said, almost as if fulfilling an obligation, "but yes, assuming I can get the coordinates, but we're actually
hackedtapped into the Portalocity database,so we can usually find it. It doesn't always get it exact, but usually pretty close. And it doesn't always work. There's plenty of dimensions and locations that are blocked, for one reason or another."Usually plot.
And petty grampas.

Connor nodded as he listened. And thought for a moment... "So the fact that the Gnomes seem unable to connect Michael to his home means it's less likely the portal gun would be able to, right? I guess we could still do a few tests. If we could figure a way to tweak the existing portals or figure out what keeps certain places from being accessed... anything could help in the long run."
no subject
She nodded toward the gun.
"You can try it, if you want," she encouraged. "Just don't break it or run off with it."
no subject
Connor held the gun and looked down it and got a feel for its weight and all. He looked over at Summer.
"So just put the button and go? How do you select where you want to go?" Please say it was something even cooler like mental focus or something!
