The Perk, Wednesday Noonish

Feeling the need for a change of scenery, Will had headed out to the Perk, and was now settled at a table with an eggnog latte and… some sort of pastry. He hadn’t paid too much attention, just asked the barista to pick whatever. Piled on the table was a stack of medical journals, and though he was currently absorbed in reading one, he was totally interruptible.

Rey sometimes came in for post-training coffee as a treat, so she watched Will for a moment once she'd ordered and was waiting. "Seems interesting."

“Hm?” Will looked up. “I suppose that depends on whether you find using lab-grown tissue to repair human organs interesting.”

It was the kind of technology that he wouldn’t be surprised to learn already existed in her reality, after all.

"That actually kind of us," Rey admitted. She also wouldn't know if they did have that tech where she was from.

“I’m inclined to agree,” Will said with a grin. “How’s it going?” It seemed like it had been forever since he’d actually had time to exchange more than a quick hello when dropping off or picking up Kol.

"I've been okay," she said, taking her order once it came up. "Busy. What about you?"

“Just- thinking about things. How much everything’s changed over the last year or so,” Will admitted.

"How so?" she asked, gesturing to an open chair in case she could sit.

Will gave her a smile and nod in response to the question implied by the gesture. Please sit!

“Oh, just- when I first came here I was… kind of in shock, you know? My life as I knew it had pretty much fallen apart. And now- things are good. Steady.”

"That's good to hear," Rey smiled, sitting. "It's always a shock, coming in someplace like this and adjusting."

"No kidding," Will said with an amused snort. Well, he could be amused about it now. It hadn't been at the time. "I was hiding out. Literally. There were- people after me. Someone had tried to kill me, so I was- sent here. For protection."

"Oh," she said, eyebrows raised. "What happened?"

"It's a long story? But- I was sort of... doing some undercover work." Yeah, remember that time he got all anxious when you'd been talking about spy stuff, Rey? This was why. "There was this guy the police had been trying to get intel on for a long time, and no one had been able to get near him, but- he was a friend of my dad's. And he asked if I'd do a house call, since he wasn't feeling well. So the police they- took advantage of that. And me. To get close to him. And eventually I got found out- on what was supposed to be my wedding day."

"Oh, I'm so sorry." She felt so bad about being teary over his apartment now. "That's horrible."

“It was- kind of terrifying for a while,” Will admitted. “But, things worked out? My fiancée and I ended up breaking up, which sucked at the time, but now I realize just how bad a fit we were for each other.” He took a long sip from his coffee. “Sorry,” he grimaced. “You probably weren’t expecting me to dump all that on you, but that’s where my head’s at, you know? Last year I was alone, and afraid for my life and not in control of anything. And now? I’ve got great friends, an awesome dog, and… I like it here. More than I ever thought I would.”

"You're completely okay," Rey assured him. "I like knowing where my friends come from. And I like knowing they're okay even more."

Will smiled at her. “I wasn’t planning on sticking around here, originally, this was supposed to be temporary. But it’s home now.”

"Good. I've gotten attached to your dog," Rey teased. Half-teased.

"He's pretty attached to you too," Will replied. "Sometimes I wonder if I ought to be insulted with how excited he gets to leave me behind on Tuesday mornings."

"Well, I don't think he's figured out how I throw the ball without throwing it yet," she said. "I have an advantage there."

"Oh man, that must be so handy," Will said with a sigh. "Especially for retrieving it from awkward places."

Absolutely a good use of the Force.

"It's basically practice," she admitted. "Especially since I don't default to using it most of the time. But you can only lose so many tennis balls."

"Aww, does that make my dog your training buddy?" Will had to ask.

"I wonder if I can get him a shirt that says that."

She was serious. FYI.

"Oh my god," Will said. "I fully support this. Please do."

"I'm so glad you're encouraging this," Rey laughed.

"Of course I am, it would be absolutely adorable."

"Now to find out how to do this," she mused. "I wonder where Master Skywalker gets his stuff."

REY NO.

"Are you thinking ridiculous patterns along with the text?" Will mused.

REY YES.

WILL NO.

"I'm sure I could..."

"Honestly the only thing that would make it better at this point is if you got a matching one."

"You'll have to get one too." Oh no.

"Oh, of course," Will said, absolutely meaning it. "I'm not letting you two have all the fun."

"Well, it seems this is happening now," Rey said, amused, and a little confused.

"See, this is why I stuck around," Will said.

Yes, he stuck around so he could wear matching t-shirts with his friend-slash-neighbor and his dog.

"You couldn't get this before? That's terrible," Rey smiled.

"I probably could've managed to get shirts for me and Kol, but nobody else who'd be willing to go in on it with me," Will said, grinning back at her.

"That's genuinely sad," Rey said. "Finn would have already ordered them if I mentioned it."

The weather was getting cooler. Which meant coffee was a necessity most days. And yes he had a coffee maker in the shop, and it would get used later today, most likely. But a nice 'fancy' coffee sounded good too.

"That's quite the pile of reading materials," Dwight said with a small nod to the stack as he waited for his drink.

“Always something new,” Will said. “Gotta keep up, especially now that I’m not really in the thick of things.” Yeah, Fandom had some really interesting advanced medical technology of its own, but it wasn’t like he could use any of it out in the wider world- at least, his own world.

Dwight nodded because that made sense. "We got that nanotech coming down the line yet?" he asked with a smirk, both somewhat joking but also kinda interested, even if that sort of thing was quite a bit beyond him.

“Not that I know of? But I’m sure someone’s working on it.”

He didn't understand much of the science side of that sort of stuff, but the concept was intriguing at least.

"Might be the one answer to the Troubles, so they get to it any time now," he said with a slight chuckle as he took his coffee from the barista with a nod of thanks.

"Huh, yeah, I can see that," Will said with a nod. "How've you been, Dwight?"

"Been alright. The lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas is definitely over. Orders at the shop are really starting to come in. How are things over at the clinic?"

"Crab-themed," Will said with an amused snort. "As per usual, these days."

"Ah yes, I have caught a few to the radio mentions. At least it keeps things from being too boring?" Didn't seem right to wish for an eventful day at the clinic after all.

“You’re right at that,” Will said with a nod. “I can’t say I don’t mind not having to do, say, emergency surgery to remove bullets,” he couldn’t help but comment. Had the time loop really been almost a year ago? Wild.

"You and be both," Dwight said with a faint smirk. "I will gladly leave that off to someone else. And crazy it had been so long ago... hopefully nothing crazy would happen again? (knock on wood).
