The store was pretty quiet today, with even the gremlins making themselves scare, possibly, make that probably, because of the weather.

Wearing multiple layers, Vi was rearranging all the minis so they were huddling for warmth. Art imitating life and all that.

Would it help at all if Steph brought in a fresh steaming bag of those jam doughnuts Vi liked so much? Because that was what she had when she came back from dropping off the mail orders at the post office.

"Got you something," she said, holding the bag up like a prize.

"I love you." Was Vi talking to Steph or the donuts? Yes.

"You're welcome," Steph told her cheerfully as she handed over the doughnuts. "Aw, you made a mini cuddle pile?"

Vi just held the warm bag of donuts close for a few minutes before opening it. "Sometimes you just need to make friends with the owlbear instead of trying to kill it."

Don't mind Steph while she just grinned like a dork at the sight of Vi cuddling the bag.

"The murder hobo route might be cathartic, but it's not always the most fun," she noted. She was going to take a cue from the minis and come up to try and drape herself over Vi from behind, though.

The bag was very precious to her right now for many reasons.

You could tell that Vi was very opposed to the draping by the way she sighed happily and snuggled back against Steph, before finally opening the bag and pulling out a donut. "Want one?" she asked around a mouthful of jam and dough, offering Steph the bag.

Mostly the warmth, though. That was Steph's guess, in any case.

"Nah, I'm good," Steph assured her. "I don't want to deprive you of a single bite of jam doughnut goodness. I know how much you love those things."

The warmth did not hurt in the slightest.

"You sure?" Vi checked, swallowing. "'Cause I also like sharing with you."

Perhaps Steph had decided that the warmth was necessary, given that some people had a bad habit of stealing all the blankets.

"I'm sure," she said, stretching up to give Vi a kiss on the cheek. "Besides, I had my giant chocolate muffin on the walk back here. Knock yourself not-literally out."

Vi couldn't help it if the blankets (and everything else in the bed) were so comfortable and snuggly.

"Okay, just didn't want you to be jealous or anything." Because the way she was looking at these donuts was pretty close to how she looked at Steph.

Comfortable for her, maybe. Other blanket-deprived people might be less inclined to agree.

"Please," Steph said with a light laugh. "Those doughnuts wish they could do half the things I can."

There was a very simple solution here involving Vi's natural tendency to cuddle.

"True," Vi agreed. "But you're both extremely tasty."

Which was why she didn't get an earful about it on a regular basis!

"It's always about the appetite with you," Steph said with an exaggerated sigh. "Insatiable, I swear."

Just an armful.

"I'm a growing girl," Vi protested. "Hungry all the time."

Or two.

"Ugh, that's such a convenient excuse," Steph teased, rolling her eyes playfully. "Good thing I like to indulge your appetite, huh?"

Literally and figuratively. Jokes aside, she wouldn't ever begrudge Vi's eagerness to avail herself of easily accessible food.

Or Vi's need to make sure Steph was also eating right.

"It's why I love you," she said, only half joking.

Steph would never begrudge her that. She might pretend to sigh about it, though.

"Damn. And here I thought it was my sparkling wit," she said in just the most disappointed tone ever, really. Speaking of pretending to sigh.

She could pretend to sigh about all she wanted, so long as she was well fed while she did so.

"I mean there's that too," Vi said lightly, leaning in to kiss her completely real and not at all feigned disappointment away.

This was an acceptable deal as long as Steph got to make sure Vi had new and interesting kinds of food to try as often as she could manage to make that happen.

"Oh good," Steph said, playfully nipping at her lower lip. "I was so worried that would go unappreciated, you know."

Given the island, it was probably pretty easy for Steph to hold up her end of this unspoken bargain.

Vi grinned into the kiss. "Don't worry, I plan on appreciating every part of you."

For Steph's part, 'new and interesting' did not include 'pizza crimes against humanity,' though if Vi wanted to try those too she wouldn't stop her. Even if she might make judgey faces about it.

"And that's why I love you," Steph told her, wrapping an arm around her neck. "One of the many reasons, at least."

At least Vi wasn't in Summer's cooking class this semester?

"Many reasons?" Vi asked, teasing. "Care listing a few more?"

That was something!

"Just a few, huh?" Steph took a few seconds to make a show of having to think about it. "I mean, you're smart and you're funny as hell, those are obvious. And you have a protective streak that's incredibly fucking sweet, but also incredibly hot. And you are so goddamn passionate when you feel strongly about something. Even when you're angry, I love that too."

Vi turned the exact same shade as her hair and pressed her face into the crook of Steph's neck. "I thought you were going to make a joke," she mumbled.

Oh, noes, not sincerity.

Steph chuckled softly and nuzzled into Vi's hair.

"I like keeping you on your toes," she replied in a low voice. "But if you want me to come up with a ten minute monologue about why the specific way you lace up your boots makes me swoon, I can probably do that too."
