Vi had swung by the bakery on the way to work to grab some of those spiced buns, only to discover that they were heavily, heavily discounted, which given how far a food budget went on this island, meant that she had brought even more buns to work than she had last game night.

Enough that even being a bottomless pit of a teenager, she probably wouldn't be able to finish them all before they went stale.

But that was what toasting was for.

"Damn, is there a reason you're carb loading today?" Steph asked, laughing. "Good thing I brought coffee to go with all of that."

"They were on special," Vi said, slightly less casually than she meant to. "And they said they weren't making more until next year."

"Must be a holiday thing," Steph realized, with a curious look at Vi. "Can I try one?"

"There was a holiday?" Technically several, Vi. "Sure, I'm not hoarding them."

From Steph at least, otherwise she fully intended on hoarding them.

"Several of them, yeah. Different religious traditions. None of which I follow, so I tend to forget about them now. Easter was a huge one for Mom, but with her gone now..." Steph trailed off there before she could get morose about it, reached for a bun and took a bite, humming her approval. "Oh, that's pretty good."

Vi leaned in against Steph, bumping their shoulders together.

"I thought so." Hence the veritable mountain of buns.

"Never would have guessed," Steph said through a mouthful of baked goodness, and rested her head against Vi's shoulder. "You know, we could probably stick some of these in my freezer so they keep longer. Not like I'm short on space in there."

Although there were actually things like frozen teriyaki chicken meal kits in there now!

"Yeah, we could," Vi agreed. "Didn't really think of that. Having the fridge already feels kind of luxurious."

Hopefully Vi was proud of her for this! She even used them fairly regularly and had to restock them.

"I usually forget too," Steph replied after another bite, "but I don't usually have enough leftovers to freeze."

Quite possibly Vi's appetite had something to do with that.

Vi was very proud and would probably find some way to make her appreciation clear.

"Hey, I'm a growing girl still."

Steph laughed and bumped her head lightly against Vi's shoulder.

"Plus at least half my leftovers come from you feeding me, so it's really only fair."

Vi turned to kiss the top of Steph's head. "And if you're one thing, it's hot, but if you're two things it's hot and scrupulously fair."

"Scrupulously fair," Steph echoed in a playfully scandalized tone. "Not 'the best damn GM ever' or 'a badass on the drums,' but scrupulously fair."

"I didn't realise I was supposed to stand here ranking your virtues all day," Vi said, laughing. "Those are pretty high on the list too."

"Oh, you have a list now?" Steph asked around the last of the bun that she'd just shoved into her mouth. Yep. Definitely hot.

Look, now was not the time to judge Vi's taste in women.

She nodded. "It's a long one. Detailed even."

Vi's taste in women wasn't under judgment here, just her definition of 'hot.'

"Impressive," Steph said lightly. "Am I supposed to be making a list for you too? Because every time I try I just end up doodling little hearts with 'Steph plus Vi 4-ever' in them all over the paper instead."

Maybe Vi happened to find Steph's mouth very hot indeed. Most of the time.

"You can if you want," she told her graciously. "I mostly just like thinking about you."

Okay, fine, that was fair.

Did Steph actually blush at that? Yeah. Yeah, she did.

"You're the literal sweetest," she said. "And, as it happens, a favorite subject to think about for me."

Vi looked stupidly pleased at that.

"Explains why I'm so tired, been running through your head all day.'

Surprise! Steph wasn't anywhere near as cool and collected as she liked to project that she was, and Vi was one of the lucky few people who got to witness that!

"Hey, wait, I'm tired too," she said, playfully nudging Vi. "Do I want to know what I've been doing in your head all day?"

Vi knew just how lucky she was with Steph.

"Playing drums like a badass," she replied without skipping a beat.

Just like Steph knew she was lucky as hell to have Vi?

"And I know how much you love that," Steph returned just as smoothly. "Especially with that vivid imagination you like to remind me you have."

It was quite the mutual admiration society they had going on.

"Yeah, I do actually," Vi said. "And it's a very vivid imagination, especially when it comes to you."

Which was convenient when they were in a relationship.

"Uh huh." Steph nudged her again and stretched up to nuzzle beneath her jaw. "Maybe that's why you're really so tired."
