The Beach - Sunday Morning

It was Nick’s birthday and he was five years old and he and Connor were going to be celebrating both their birthdays by going fossil hunting at the beach. They also had Rex with them, who was still looking a little annoyed at how loud his tiny humans were being but the fact he got to fly around outside while they went fossil hunting.

“I bet we’re going to find lots of tribbobites,” Nick declared confidently as they got to the beach to begin looking.

[Nick is here for Connor who is modded with permission but the beach can be open!]

"I bet we will find cool dinosaur fossils too!" Connor said as they got to the beach to begin their fossil hunt. "I bet we can fill our buckets by the time we are done!" he said excitedly as he held up the small bright red plastic bucket and shovel he had brought with him.

He smiled as he looked up and down the beach, imagining all the other great things they were going to find. Rex gave a small chirp that sounded partly annoyed and partly concerned and then started to fly around the area for a bit.

Connor grinned broadly then stopped and dropped to his knees in the sand. "I think we should start digging here!" he decided because it was the perfect spot to find plenty fo fossils for sure! "Rex can be our look out and let us know if he sees anything while we dig!"

The chirp from high above their heads was likely one of resignation as Rex enjoyed getting to stretch his wings and fly around, but still keeping relatively close to keep an eye on his annoying tiny humans.

Connor nodded and started digging. He quickly found a couple of shells which he dropped into his bucket. Treasure was treasure after all! "Remember! keep an eye on the water. We'll get wet if the tide comes in..." he said somewhat proud that he remembered that.

Connor grinned proudly at that then looked at the rock Nick was holding up. "Oh it's so smooth! Look at the colors, it's so shiny!" he said excitedly. "That is a great find Nick, good job!"

"Oh for sure! It needs to go on the bookshelf where everyone will be able to see it" Connor agreed. He went back to digging and made the hole a little deeper and wider. There were a few normal stones and shells that got added to the bucket. But then Connor found something cool. "Oh look at this!" he held up an old bottlecap.

"It looks old" Connor said looking at the bottlecap. "It's probably been here for three hundred years!" Because of course, it had to be that old!

"We still have a lot of beach to search! I am sure we can find a tribbobite still" Connor said as he carefully placed his bottlecap in the bucket. "You already found a really cool stone!"

"Rex!" Connor called out to Rex who was still circling around overhead. "Come help us dig!" He watched for a moment as Rex kept circling. "I guess he's busy enjoying the view" Connor said with a grin as he went back to digging, moving a little to start making another hole.

"That is a nice one! Look how shiny it is on the bottom side" he said as Nick turned it over. "I wonder if an animal used to live inside it at some point? Like an ammonite or a hermit crab?"

"I bet it is! It's probably a really old shell. It been buried here for a long long long time and you were the first to find it!" Connor said excitedly.

"It's like the beach gave you a birthday present" Connor grinned. "That shell definitely has to go somewhere special when we get back home!"

"Oh definitely! Everyone who comes to visit will need to see it. You can tell them all about the amazing birthday, and our fossil hunt, and rex, and everything you know about fossils!"

Connor, don't encourage him!

"Course you can, if anyone else comes by to visit!" Connor said with a nod and a broad grin. "And if anyone comes by the beach here we can show them everything we have collected so far! We can tell them all about fossils and the shells and rocks. We can be liked real paleto... real fossil hunters!"

"And Rex can be our mascott! And we can give talks about how cool he is. You can be the fossil hunter and I will be your assistant!" Conne squeed happily.

Funny how some things seemed to line up no matter what timeline shenanigans of Fandom madness was afoot huh?

"Not bad for our first fossil hunting birthday eh?" Connor grinned as he went back to digging. Just then Rex finally got tired of flying around and landed nearby, giving a small chirp as he cautiously scuttled over to see what his tiny humans were doing.

Connor giggled as Rex nuzzled the bucket a little as if he were looking through the treasures inside. Then with a small chirp he headed towards the water edge and started splashing in the shallow water.

"Oh that's a good idea Rex!" Connor said suddenly. "There's probably some really cool shells and stuff right at the water's edge!"

Connor nodded and took a minute to take his socks and shoes off and then reached up and took Nick's hand with a smile. "Maybe we can find a shark tooth too! I'd love to find a shark tooth" he said with a grin as they started towards the water's edge.

Connor nodded and ran into the water, forgetting to roll up his pant legs as he got about ankle deep into the shallow waves. He didn't care, he was looking for shark teeth!

"Eeeep the water's a little cold!" he squealed, though that was definitely not enough to slow him down too much.

"Ah you did that on purpose!" Connor laughed as he got splashed and then of course returned a few kicks of his own, sending water splashing towards Nick. It didn't take long for them to start getting quite wet and Connor was soon laughing hard as he bent down and started deliberately sending water in Nick's direction.

Absolutely the best birthday ever! Connor laughed and shrieked with delight as he chased Nick along the beach, the water splashing with every step and getting them both soaked as they played. It was an absolutely perfect fossil-hunting adventure!
