The Magpie Emporium, Monday [26/2]

With most people off island, Vi didn't think it was going to be all that busy at the store today, but the gremlins were pretty dedicated, so she figured she might as well open up, and redo the display of two person rpgs while she was at it.

And by redoing the display up, she meant reading through any that looked particularly interesting for later.

"So, someone I'm not naming but who might happen to have impeccable taste in knitted headwear has successfully scored a portal and reserved copy of Sleater-Kinney's new album on vinyl, to be signed in store tomorrow on the other side of the country," Steph said, appearing dramatically in the office doorway with a triumphant grin on her face. "And she might have room for a plus one, if you know anyone interested."

Vi covered up her own grin with her hand as she pretended to think it over.

"I mean, my best friend has been excited about this for a while," she teased. "I should let her know."

"Oh, yeah? Cool, but also damn," Steph said, gamely playing along with an exaggerated shake of her head. "I have it on good authority that this person was really hoping you'd be down to go with her."

"Oh," Vi said in mock surprise. "I'll have to let my girl know, I think she's been planning something for then."

"What a wild coincidence." Steph hopped up to sit on the counter, idly kicking her feet back and forth. "Think she'll be okay with you going to this incredibly awesome thing without her?"

Vi removed to rest her hand on Steph's knee. Not seductively, just because it was there. "She's pretty great about not wanting me to miss out on these kind of things," she said, teasing but sincere. "Though maybe we can see if we can get her a ticket too."

Steph snickered, the swinging of her legs slowing to a stop just so she wouldn't kick Vi.

"She might be okay with that. I guess. Maybe it's presumptive of me to try and speak for her, though."

"Oh, yeah," Vi said, grinning. "She definitely knows her own mind. Love that about her."

Steph wasn't looking pleased about that, shut up. "Should I worry about her coming to kick my ass for my part in depriving her of you for the day?"

She was fully expecting a noodle arms crack, yes.

Butter would not have melted in Vics mouth as she said. "Probably. Her arms are pretty noodly but she's a biter."

Steph sighed indulgently and aimed a poke at Vi's shoulder.

"Poor me, gonna get my ass kicked and nobody will be here to rescue me while you two are off having fun."

"Sucks to be you," Vi said cheerfully, leaning in to steal a kiss.

"Wow," Steph said, laughing as she slung an arm around Vi's neck. "No sympathy? And here I was going to book a nice fancy dinner for tomorrow night."

"I mean, I could probably be sympathetic for a nice fancy dinner," Vi said, like the cheerful mercenary that she was.

"So shameless," Steph said, making a tsk-ing noise. "I like it. Fine, I can still make sure you get an excuse to dress up a little bit and have an expensive but reasonable meal tomorrow night."

Because 'fancy' by her standards still wasn't all that fancy.

As far as Vi was concerned, dressing up for a meal made it fancy no matter how much it cost.

"I can hardly wait."

And as far as Steph was concerned, 'dressing up' didn't mean the same thing Michelin-starred restaurants tended to think it meant!

"So sad for you, I still haven't developed time powers," she informed Vi breezily. "But I can help you pass the time, at least. Picked anything out to play tonight?"

She knew you, Vi.

Vi's grin grew even more as she passed the slim booklet across to Steph. "This one looks fun," she said. "It's about fighting and having a smart mouth."

"Oh hell yeah, this one?" Steph stole one more quick kiss as she took the booklet back, her tone turning very dry. "Never would've expected you to vibe with a game about fighting and having a smart mouth. Wow."

Or using her smart mouth to provoke a fight. "I know, it's not like me at all."

"Totally uncharacteristic," Steph said dramatically, shaking her head. "Guess you're going to have to dig really deep to roleplay this one, but I have this weird feeling you'll do really well at it."

Call it a wild hunch.

What amazing intuition Steph had!

Vi shook her head very, very sadly. "I can only hope you're right."

"I believe in you," Steph replied, pumping her fist in an exaggerated pep-talk pose. "Maybe you'll discover you have a natural talent for it! Wilder things have happened."

Much.

Vi turned to press her face against Steph's shoulder until she stopped giggling. "Oh, but I'm just so shy and retiring."

"You're such a delicate flower," Steph teased, with a little kiss behind Vi's ear on 'flower.' "Not at all an extremely well-muscled badass."

Vi took that as an invitation to flex for Steph. "Yeah, I'm a real shrinking violet," she said, resting her chin on Steph's shoulder.

She had a standing invitation to do that, as far as Steph was concerned.

Steph snickered, reaching up to pat Vi's bicep with a distinctly appreciative air as she slid her other arm around her waist.

"Yeah, we gotta get you to be more assertive, you know?"

True, but she was also happy to take suggestions from Steph. "If only I knew someone with self confidence to teach me all her secrets."

"Mmmm, couldn't be me." Steph kissed the curve of her ear. "If you want an expert on faking it until it happens, though, I am at your service."

Vi gasped, partly because of the kiss, mostly not. "Have you been lying this entire time?"

The horror!

Steph laughed.

"Not really? It's just not something that comes naturally to me, so I end up doing things scared shitless the first couple of times until I realize I can fuck up and it's actually okay if I do. The confidence takes practice, but I've had a pretty good amount of practice by now."

Vi reached for her hand to kiss the palm of it. "I'd never be able to tell."

Steph curled her fingers lightly, cupping Vi's cheek.

"That is privileged information, I'll have you know."

"My lips are sealed," Vi promised, kissing her palm again.

"I trust you," Steph replied, running her thumb along Vi's cheek. "Though if you want help making sure they're really sealed, I'd be happy to help. You know."

Vi nodded seriously. "It's always a good idea to be sure."

Steph tried to tug her a little closer.

"Mind if I do a little hands-on inspection, then?"

Vi happily let herself be tugged, settling between Steph's knees. "If you think it's necessary."

"Not necessary," Steph said slowly, nudging her nose against Vi's. "I trust you, like I said. I just like to be thorough."

"And I think being thorough is very necessary," Vi said, leaning in. "Very, very necessary."

"In that case, let me take care of the important business," Steph murmured, then leaned in to kiss her.

Thoroughly.

Hands draped behind her neck, Vi definitely wasn't going to be sharing any of Steph's secrets for a good long while.

From the way Saffron started yowling, she certainly seemed willing to spill everything Vi wouldn't, but well... who could understand her, anyway? Her burdens were infinite.

Steph was too busy kissing Vi to spare a thought for their poor beleaguered cat, though. Curse you, Food Human!
