The vibe was off at Caritas today. Maybe it was Tino. Maybe it was the zombies. Maybe it was the gremlins drinking down at the end of the bar.

But it was definitely something.

Which was why Jane was on edge the whole time. Because the island was testing everyone, it seemed.

Dean walked into Caritas and immediately spotted... Well, something.

"Do I want to know what they are?" Dean asked as he approached the bar, jabbing his thumb in the gremlins direction.

"As long as they stay down there, we're fine."

Because that was just Fandom sometimes.

"I hope."

“I could shoot them?” Dean offered. “Or try and scare them off.”

"And end up in the pond?" Dean, no.

Or maybe Dean, yes. Who knew?

Realization soon hit right after Jane’s words.


“Riiiiight. For some reason I thought was just for punching people,” he said with a frown. “They’re gremlins, right?”

"I'm pretty sure so." But not a 100%. Having never been around them more than in passing. "I'm just glad they're ordering from Tino."

“Oh. No. Please don’t bite Tino. Stop. Please,” Dean said, sounding like Gene Wilder from Charlie in the Chocolate Factory whenever the kids did something stupid.

"It might be interesting," Jane said, leaning over the bar to grin at Dean without drawing attention from the gremlins. "For science."

Yes. Science.

Dean couldn’t help but smile back. “Okay. What do we do? Set up a… control group?”

"Exactly!" This is why she liked you so much, Dean. You were goofy with her.

“And then we need to come up with a hypotenuse. I mean hypothesis,” Dean said, struggling to think of other scientific terms.

"This ends badly," Sabine told him. Hi!

“Are you saying you are feeling some sort of negative emotion regarding this situation?”

C’mon, Sabine. Say the GFFA line.

"Yes," she said, frowning at him.

Hush, it's fun to mess with Dean.

"I'm not going to say they're plotting. But it's suspicious."

"Well, they can't bite us in here, right?" Dean asked. "No violence and all that or they get teleported."

"I've never tested it, so I won't say for sure," she said.

It'd be weird if you did test it, Sabine.

"Just watch your ankles."

“I could test it,” Dean said thoughtfully.

Because even though it would be a dumb idea, it would not be a weird thing for him to do.

"You're serious," she said slowly.

Sabine’s reaction immediately put Dean on guard. “Nope. They can bite Tino.”

Tino by the looks of it didn't want to be any part of that.

"It's one of those Fandom experiences I try very hard to avoid," she said.

"I don't trust this," Sabine said immediately, looking at that end of the bar.

"They've mostly kept to themselves." So far, went unsaid.

"Have you seen them in action yet?" Sabine asked.

[needsacatchphrase]

"Just the stories about them," Jane admitted. "Have you?"

"The stories, I think. It's been like a decade," Sabine said. "I just know to wear boots."

"Well, at least we know they'd get booted to the pond if they tried here." But the bite might still happen.

"You'd still end up hallucinating," Sabine pointed out.

[needsacatchphrase]

"So, use Tino as a human shield?" The best solution to the problem there.

"I'm curious how this would work but I'm not opposed," she said.

[needsacatchphrase]

"Well, he's already the one serving them, so he's already in the line of danger."

Which meant this was clearly the best plan they could go with.

"This is a terrible idea and I'm going to be watching him the whole time now." See? Not opposed.

"If you take notes, that means it's science," Jane pointed out. Because Dean encouraged her there.

"Does video on my phone count as notes?"

Yes.

"Oh yes, definitely." Guys, why must you torment Tino?

[seriesofbaddecisions]

"Perfect," she said, getting out her phone to just so happen to have it vaguely pointing in that direction of the bar.

Which of course wouldn't make anyone paranoid.

"Need a drink while we do science?" Jane asked.

[seriesofbaddecisions]

"Sure," she said. "Maybe if you have anything with sweet tea?"

Just sounded good.
