Not even ten minutes into getting ready for her shift, and Summer was already rolling her eyes at Tino and giving him a withering look. "Do I know about the cicada-infused Malört," she stated, dry as can be. "Tino. How could you even ask me that question? Everyone knows about the cicada-infused Malört."

There was a beat, and she eyed him a moment, and then ventured, "Do you have some of the cicada-infused Malört?"

And then it was Tino's turn to give Summer's look right back at her for a moment before proudly clunking a bottle onto the counter. She grinned, informed him that it was rude of him to save this until tonight when she couldn't actually work it into her jello shots.

But there was time to work it into a cocktail.

And if it's brunch that means earlier so idk the weekend maybe? I wouldn't hate an excuse to not deal with apu as much on Monday. We could also do next Wednesday for lol ~old times sake~. I just get my shots ready to set, hop on over for our ~power brunch~ then back later for my bar shift

weekends fine. And the fun thing about mimosas was that you could just drink orange juice and pretend it was a mimosa! wouldnt want to eat into your jello preptime

Last week, Lucy had tried out the other bar (and an interesting soda, which she'd liked quite a bit!) This place had a very different atmosphere from what she could tell when she walked in, and right away, the ghoul band (?) was getting a watchful, wary look from her as she took a seat at the bar.

"They're...okay?" she asked, glancing to the bartender (either of them, but you know, the redhead just seemed chattier than the guy back there) and cocking her head towards the band.

"They're okay," Summer confirmed, after considering that wary and watchful look and uncertain approach. "Totally harmless, unless you count when the guitarist hits those notes a little too harsh because his fingertape needs a touch-up."

Then she flashed Lucy a bright smile. "So, welcome to Caritas, I assume. My name is Summer, I do jello shots here every Wednesday, and we have a zombie karaoke band. Newbies definitely get one on me, so..."

She gestured helpfully toward the specials board.

"So are you, like, super new, or just a little bit new and just haven't made your way in yet?"

"I'm a little less new than the folks who came in with the special picnic?" Lucy offered after a moment's consideration, and flashed Summer a slightly-reassured smile. (People here continued to be vault-levels of friendly. It wasn't the worst.) "Is a jello shot -- that's not alcoholic jello, is it?"

Because that sounded intriguing, especially to someone with a nearly mid-century appreciation for gelatin art.

"And I'm Lucy," she added, thrusting her right hand -- the index finger of which was plainly dead, if not actually rotting or anything off her hand -- over the bar for a shake.

Look, if someone had a dead finger, that was their perogative and Summer would save asking all about it for a time when she knew a little more about a person than just their name, their newness, and their aversion to zombies.

(Although that alone might fill in some gaps in interesting ways).

Summer took the hand in stride with a nice,self-assertivrle shake that put all that working out to some pretty work.

"Nice to meet you, Lucy," she said. "Happy belated welcome to Fandom. And yes. Very alcoholic jello. It's kind of my thing around here? One of them, anyway. And fair warning, one of them is usually pretty gross or unconventional by most people's standards. Usually the last one, but not always. Today, it's the spicy banana ketchup. But my favorite's the strawberry pie."

Lucy, who had eaten shelf-stable deviled eggs within the last month and who had grown up on Cram, was actually a little intrigued by the banana ketchup. (Let's be real: she also wouldn't really object to drinking the cicada Malört -- she just needed a little time to learn local vocabulary.)

"I'll take your recommendation, then," Lucy decided with a firm nod. "Strawberry pie it'll be. Do you make the unconventional one for...people with unconventional palates?"

She had an associate who couldn't taste anything, she was pretty sure. Were they intended for people like him?

"Sort of," Summer said with a softer kind of smile. "That's kind of how the whole thing got started. I had a friend who would eat nearly anything, and I took that on as a personal challenge. Nowadays, admittedly, it's probably more to gross out the people who do have conventional palates, but around here, we get all sorts."

Without further ado, then, she set one of the strawberry pie shote down in front of Lucy.

"Now," she offered helpfully, "the trick with the ones in cups is to use your tongue to go around the rim to loosen it. Some people like to try and just squeeze the sides, but that method can be really hit and miss, especially dealing with a textured one like this one."

You know what, if this worked out, maybe she would try the ketchup one. Just for fun, based on that explanation!

Lucy looked a little uncertain, but you know what -- do as the locals tell you, right? She'd kind of learned that lesson the hard way, a couple times over, and looking a little silly and provocative with her tongue was hardly the weirdest thing she'd been advised to do recently.

"That's really good," she noted, once she'd extracted the shot and eaten it with an actual little, 'Mmmmm,' of appreciation. "Um, back in my vault, we used to have jello cake for special occasions. Never put alcohol in it, though."

There was a twinge of homesickness, there. Maybe she should have asked for a jello cake for her wedding.

(Thinking about the wedding did not help her homesickness.)

"Is that, like, a poke cake where you have the jello infused into an actual cake?" Summer had to ask. "Or more, like, jello molded and-or shaped into a cake?

"Also, did you say your vault?"

Look, Summer priorities were different.

Stark was still wearing his shrimp shirt from shenanigans when he arrived and slid into his usual stool.

"Hi, Summer."

He glanced over at the specials board. "Oh no."

And here Summer was about to greet Stark back when he had to react like that, and so now she was just going to take a moment to bask in that, instead.

And then, when she opened her eyes, she blinked them as wide and innocently as she could, though the smirk remained prominent and present.

"Oh no?" she asked, now with an oh-so-confused tilt of her head. "Why? What's wrong,Stark?"

"Malört is bad enough on its own," Stark said. "It tastes like...Rygel."

You've met Rygel now, Summer. Think about that.

"Now you’ve put the screaming bugs into it?"

"I didn't put them in there," Summer said, pointing to herself defensively, because of you were going to accuse her of disgusting things, at least be accurate about them, "some dickbags in Chicago who think they're funny did. And Tino's the one who got the bottle! All I did was make a cocktail put of it!"

This was a group effort, dammit, and credit where credit was due!

"But, more importantly....how do you know what Rygel tastes like?"

Don't think you were getting out of that one by distracting her with semantics, mister!

"Close quarters," Stark said. "We shared a room, on board Talyn, and he isn't good about personal space and I think once I kissed the top of his head once."

Also Rygel had definitely projectile vomited in Stark's face because Rygel was the worst.

"I'm not drinking that tonight. But I'll try all the jello."

Everyone, please take a moment to give Summer a GOLD FUCKING STAR in restraint that she didn't immediately just ask Stark which head.

Instead, she was going to just smirk in this new knowledge gained and dutifully start setting out shots.

"Even the spicy banana ketchup one?" she checked.

Summer, no! Gross.

"Even the spicy banana ketchup one," Stark confirmed. "I'll start with that and then have the others. Are you planning on making jello for your birthday?"

He'd checked the calendar and realized it was on a bar night. "Or taking that night off?"

He was the one who brought how Rygel tastes into this conversation, not her! Don't blame her for how you sounded, Stark!

"Save the pie one," she said, nudging that one slightly apart as the ketchup one joined the others, "for last."

She probably didn't need to tell him that, but it seemed important enough to make sure of it.

She took a moment to just admire the shots before she grinned, hitching up a shoulder in a shrug. "I don't know yet," she said. "I guess that all depends on what might come up..."

Hey, usually Summer liked the way Stark sounded!

"I was wondering if you had ideas for what you might like to do for that day," he said, picking up the banana ketchup shot.

Once it had been dealt with he shrugged. "That wasn't so bad. But... would you like to go away? Back to your spa? Somewhere else? Or stay here, maybe there could be a party?"

Man, the next visit out to Rygel's planet or whatever was going to be weird, now, wasn't it?

"I actually haven't really thought about it much yet," Summer admitted, with a shrug of her shoulders, and maybe a faint, hopeful sort of smile sent Stark's way. "I guess that means I'm pretty open to suggestions..."

And someone had a new boyfriend title that he might consider living up to.

But, you know, hey. No pressure or anything.

Maybe they'd get involved in an intergalactic conflict and be able to avoid the awkwardness?

"Those are suggestions," Stark pointed out with a grin. He picked up the watermelon shot next. "It's your birthday so you should get to choose what would be the most fun for you. We'd talked about going away, again, but that wouldn't have to be for your birthday...but it could be! Ireland seems very nice from everything I've seen."

"Okay, fine," said Summer, rolling her eyes, but she was grinning, "I'm open to offers, how's that? Maybe what I want for my birthday is to be surprised. What about that?"

"I can do a surprise," Stark said. "But you won't be surprised about being surprised...unless you think I won't really surprise you and then you'll be surprised that I do or maybe you'll expect a surprise and be surprised that there isn't one..."

Time for the rum&coke shot, clearly.

"But if it's a trip you'd need some notice or I'd have to pack for you and I don't think you want that." Or maybe she did?

On this rare occasion, Harley was squinting at the specials board with a curious tilt of her head.

"Cicada... what?"

"Grapefruit Malört!" Summer answered back, cheerfully and easily. "Have you not had Malört before?"

A pause.

"Or grapefruit?"

Hey, you never knew!

"No to the first, yes to the second," Harley replied, still with that headtilt, although now it was because she was thinking things over, "and no to either of those things with anything related to cicadas."

And a pause for more thought, which brought forth this gem:

"Or any bugs! I think."

"Tequila's got worms," Summer pointed out, because she'd had that one locked and loaded and was not going to let it go to waste. "But, yeah, no, with the cicadas going all crazy everywhere this summer, a bunch of jackoffs in Chicago were all 'hey, you know what would be a great idea? If we took one of the multiverse's absolute worst liquors and added horny molting bugs to it.' Naturally, Tino scored a bottle of it. And, just as naturally, I made a cocktail out of it."

A beat.

"I didn't know he had it in time to make shots out of it, unless I went and got my auto-shot maker, and..." She shrugged. "Meh. Too far."

Literally across the street and only one floor up, but okay, Summer.

No, that seemed reasonable to Harley! Of course, she didn't know where Summer lived, but still.

Anyway, she was also shaking her head at the bugs. And then took another contemplative look at the featured list, before deciding, "I'm gonna get the mojito and the pie. Without bugs, please."

"Mojito and pie," Summer agreed with a nod, as she went to get those shots and set them in front of Harley, "guaranteed bug-free."

Probably? Like, don't get her started on carmine, Harley! For all the people who gave her crap about frog jello, she did sort of wonder if they knew what other gross things they were consuming without even batting an eye!

But, anyway....

"And how've you been? Enjoying the summer so far?"

"A guy keeps breaking into my store," Harley shared, with some really raised eyebrows. She picked up what she was pretty sure was the mojito shot. "Other than that, though, it's pretty good."

Maybe even better than that? ~~Assuming no one screwed anything up in SP.~~
