Summer wasn't really sure when exactly this had happened, but, apparently, according to him, Tino had always been an aggressive Connect Four player, and he was leaning into it that evening hard by posting up a couple of the games and promising that, if anyone managed to beat him, they could have their drinks for free tonight.

She agreed to play one game with him, and she was pretty sure it was the most aggressive round of a game pretty much meant for children she had ever played without anything actually exploding. Tino did, in fact, win, and more easily than she would have liked to have admitted, and she might have gone for a rematch if he wasn't being so obnoxiously braggadocios about how swiftly and smartly he'd beaten her.

She almost warned him to chill, that it was just a game, but she could already tell that that could just end up in a lot of Connect Four boards being upended from the bar, and she did not want to deal with that.

"I--huh." Adrian's brow furrowed. "Is he British, like you?"

"Yes," Jon answered. "If that makes a difference. He's never mentioned having relatives in the States, though, and it's a common enough name. Just an odd coincidence."

"More than likely, yes," Adrian agreed. "Though we came from England, centuries ago, when the witch hunt craze in Europe forced the Old Wives to move the Blackwood from England to the New World."

Likely just a coincidence, but interesting.

"The new world wasn't all that much better," Jon said, "unless perhaps the Salem witch trials never happened in your world. Though I suppose there's much more room to lose yourselves in here."

"The Salem witch trials took the lives of something like thirty people," he said. "Europe murdered thousands."

"Also, we're based in Western Massachusetts, and Salem is about as east as you can get, it borders the sea." His face tightened and he looked away. "We also had--protection," he gritted out.

"Sorry, I...I didn't mean to bring up a sore topic," Jon said. "I, um. I'm not...well. I'm sorry."

Adrian shook his head. "It's fine," he assured Jon with a pained smile. "Just, ah. History echoes down, you know?"

"I understand," Jon said. "I, um." How did you apologise for something like that? "I could buy you a drink if you like. In apology."

Did that work?

"No apologies necessary," Adrian assured him. "Though I'm certainly not going to turn down a drink, but please don't feel obligated."

"You can consider it a, um. A welcome gift, then," Jon said. "Also a tip - Summer," he gestured at the bartender, "is a very good person to know. Extremely helpful."

"Everybody talks to a bartender, or so it's said," Adrian agreed. "And, honestly, I'll take all the tips you're willing to share."

They might be more helpful than Logan's were!

"Er, well. If you're used to magic, that will be a help. Be prepared for a lot of odd happenings. The island is...different. But most of it's not...not inimical. It isn't hostile, just occasionally difficult. I've been two different versions of my future self," which the less said about, the better, "a child, a woman, a cat, and an entirely different person for one weekend."
