Summer had gotten to the bar early so that she could decorate, because while she might be all about the big, extravagant parties, Stark was not, not really, and so she was opting for something simple, straight forward, and already fit nicely into the fabric of her usual Wednesday workday and the fact that he would be coming to the bar anyway.

So the place was decked out nicely with a bunch of gold and blue balloons and streamers, and there was a "Happy Birthday, Stark!" banner over the karaoke stage, and the zombie were wearing gold and blue birthday hats (there were more available at the bar if anyone else wanted one), and Tino promised not to be too annoying.

Summer wasn't sure she believed him, but she supposed only time would tell, and she had too much stuff to set up, anyway.

Since yesterday had been the official day designated as Stark's birthday, Watts and Steven ~~who would ping in when the player was able~~ had decided to head to Caritas on the assumption that Summer would be doing a little something to continue those celebrations.

"Evening, Miss Smith," he greeted, noting the banner and other decorations, thus confirming that assumption.

"Detective," Summer greeted back with a nod. "How goes it?"

"Oh, pretty well," he said. "If quiet. Which may well be tempting fate, around here."

"Eh," Summer shrugged a shoulder a little. "It's been the first half of January. It always seems a little quiet from everyone recovering from the holidays. What can I get for you?"

"A glass of Cabernet Sauvignon," Watts requested. "And how are you doing?"

There was another shrug, as Summer's attention shifted to the current selection of cabs and she considered them on the basis of her 'cool label' criteria before snagging a particular bottle to crack open.

What? She liked horses!

"Pretty good," she said as she poured. "I think my class is going to have some interesting results this semester, and Stark's birthday's been a success so far, I didn't have to spend Christmas back home, and I haven't been roped into anything too annoying or dumb lately," and behold, he had himself a glass, "so I'd say things are pretty good."

"Cheers to that, then," Watts offered, holding his glass up to her in a toast of sorts before taking a thoughtful sip.

"Yup," Summer agreed, maybe just a little bit awkwardly, because she wasn't really sure if that met her requirement of being a good bartender or not, or if she should still try to make more conversation with Watts, or if he'd even want that, or what, so she just sort of tacked on a "Thanks" and was ready to leave him to the thoughtful sips if he wanted.

It appeared he wouldn't mind a little conversation, given the: "Good choice, by the way," and a nod at the glass that followed another one of those thoughtful sips.

"Well," Summer said, "it is my job."

And the Cool Label technique had literally never failed her, but she decided to keep the fact that she mostly just picked it because of the horse on it to herself.

You know. Important bartender secrets and all that.

"....soooooo," she ventured, "you, uh, taking any classes again this semester?"

She remembered he'd taken Stark's class last time, too, so maybe?

"Looks lovely, doesn't it?" Steven said as he took a seat beside Llewellyn. "All decked out for Stark?"

"That it does," Watts agreed, with a flicker of something melancholy in his expression before it was replaced by a smile.

Steven bumped their shoulders together. "Good that we'll be able to see Stark close to his birthday at least."

"I figured even if she wasn't planning an extravagant soirée, Miss Smith would still do something, especially considering how close the date was to her regular shift," Watts agreed.

"And fair odds Stark would be here today," Steven said. "Fewer customers more loyal than he is."

At least for one bartender in particular.
