Groovy Tunes; Thursday [06/05].

After talking with Charlie on Tuesday about Thor and his lightning, Stewart had gotten...ideas, and so in preparation for this month's Open Mic Night, he was doing a lot of work around the stage that day. Anyone coming into the shop needing assistance or wanting to buy something might need to wait for him to come down from the ladder as he was putting up clouds and lights over the stage, and dripping down other lights. And even once the visuals were in place, there was hooking it up to his rig where he could get the lights to either flash based on what was playing from the speakers or sort of set it up on a different kind of control during his set.

It wasn't quite what he envisioned. In the broad light of day, it definitely looked a little DIY high school theater, but maybe once it was time for the show and the lights were down, it would look dope as hell.

Guess time would tell. He just hoped he had enough time after setting it up to actually work on his set. He'd been weirdly busy this week and hadn't dedicated as much time to it as he usually would have.

The doors stay open after regular business hours for Open Mic Night, so come on in, see who's playing, maybe get ready to perform yourself. Or just keep being pretentious about music, which is especially important on Open Mic Night.

Charlie totally approved of the new look and might have added a charm or two of her own to add an additional flash or crackle of lightning at appropriate times.

Sorry, Stewart, pretentious wasn't really Charlie's thing, but she was going to have a blast anyway!

Well, Jack's class was cancelled, and he'd considered just going home for the day, but... eh. He'd heard about the open mic night thing on the radio and he might as well stop by, right?

Just to watch, mainly.

So he showed up, hanging back by the door, just to see if anyone would play.

"Oh, shit," said Summer, once she spotted Jack. "Did you get bribed with pot brownies, too?"

She would feel so much better about this if it was an everyone thing!

(But also maybe a little not better. Shut up.)

"Do I look like I do pot brownies?" Jack asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

"You look like you maybe should," Summer noted, before sighing and admitting, "but no, I guess. I was just hoping maybe Stewart was just trying a bold new marketing strategy, but probably not."

Oh well!

But since he was here...

"Are you going to perform?"

"I mean, I don't have the band here," Jack pointed out. "I was just... going to watch and see who turned up?"

Don't be a coward, Rand.

"You don't need a band," Summer pointed out, with a needling grin and a roll of her eyes. "And, I mean, you showed up. You're already here. "

She'll send you the bill for more edibles for In-Audience Hype Man services rendered later, Stewart.

"I need a band if I'm going to have guitar and drums," Jack argued. "We only have like. Three songs? Two? That could possibly be done just on solo piano. At least without some serious up-front rearranging work or losing a lot of the fabric of the song."

"Yeah, but can't you also just, like, make something up as you go?" Summer said. "No one cares. But if you're that hard up for accompaniment, I could bust out some of my middle-school flute playing skills. Bet you didn't even know I used to play flute."

Like, ten years ago. And she quit because it wasn't cool.

Jack pulled a face, and not just because of the obvious reason. Not that he was going to volunteer that information. "Pass," he said.

He looked to the stage again, and took a deep breath.

Summer followed his eyes and then shook her head.

"I swear to god," she said, "I don't think I've ever seen anyone so scared of a stage who spends so much time on a stage before in my life."

"I'm not scared, I'm just trying to think of an angle that'll work," Jack retorted.

He was absolutely scared.

"Space," he said. "Fine, I've got something, now get off my back, all right?"

He was just gonna get up on there, do his thing, and ~~flee~~ walk away gracefully, his point proven.

Turns out, there was no such thing as a free pot brownies.

Because it turned out that Stewart's offering last night did come with a caveat. Thankfully, it was a simple one, and it was pretty much just a request to stop by the Open Mic Night tonight.

And sure, Summer could have just said yes and then not showed up, but she probably would have felt (a little) bad, and blah blah blah supporting local businesses and art blah blah whatever. It wouldn't kill her to show up and listen to some remixes and guitar music for an hour or two.

Sing some songs, play some instruments, show off your Mongolian throat singing! Whatever you've got, let the world (or at least Groovy Tunes) know about it!

Now with stormy set dressing, oooo~oooooh!

Like Stewart was going to go through all this trouble for a lightning theme and not do a set that fit it accordingly. Please.

Although, to be fair, he was the type to be contrarian enough to completely bypass it, but also a theme made it easy to know what to pull from and what to go with.

Naturally, then, it started with a remix of Thunderstruck, which then bled into Dreams, riding the chill vibe into Lightning and then a touch of Thunder Kiss before going into the real light show with The Thunder Rolls and rounding it out with a Lightning Bolt.

All of it laced with cleverly timed crashes of lightning that put the lighting he'd been working on to good effect, and the same went for the fog machine kicking in at some point, too.

Charlie just went with a more acoustic version of some of the folkier viking music she'd found earlier in the week. She couldn't really do good heavy metal with just her guitar, but there might be some charmed effects to enhance what she could do.

There weren't a lot of Fools songs that could be finagled into a piano arrangement on the turn of a dime (Jack, with his stupid screwed up arm thanks to stupid screwed up Sion, could not play a guitar for long). There were two. Maybe three, if he wanted to pretend 'we just live' worked without Jill's insane drum patterns. One of those two wasn't just his, and the other was really personal, and...

Ugh.

Jack gave up. He dragged the electronic piano to the stage. "If anyone says anything about this later, I will kill you," he said. Half-heartedly, considering the audience, but still.

He sat down behind the stupid piano. He found the original key, the notes he'd played when he'd been building this stupid thing stupidly by his stupid self-- a winding melody with a little backbone and a thoughtful, wry take on A Minor.
