The first call came right as Jack was halfway into a Henley (in which he got stuck for an embarrassing thirty seconds, by which time the phone had stopped ringing). The second came as he was digging around for his keycard at the hotel desk (and then dropped it in his effort to get to his phone). The third followed right in the middle of his conversation with the barista at the Perk about the exact amount of sugar to dump into his giant coffee, which was now more sugar than caffeine.

And the fourth, the one he actually managed to pick up in time? Came while he was walking to a table with said very big, very hot coffee in hand.

"Rand," he managed.

"Trent bought a van!"

He was silent for a moment.

"Dane," he said, enunciating very clearly, "This could have been a text."

"Sorry!"

He sank down into a seat and immediately spilled sugar-coffee on his shirt. Sigh.
