J, GoB's, Tuesday Afternoon

Miho stopped by Jeff's to terrorize the clerk and pick up some cheesecake. Mmm, delicious cheesecake. She was in a good mood, so as she waited for the clerk to box up her cheesecake, she decided to share it with the girls at the Sin. She thought Becky in particular needed cheesecake for some reason.

Jack, hand in hand with Z, came through the door of J,GoB. Jack sniffed appreciatively and gave a happy sigh. "Now, I believe I promised you danish, didn't I?" Jack turned to Z. "Why danish specifically?"

"I don't know. I just wanted danish. Haven't you ever had a craving?" Z had to admit, it smelled like heaven in here.

Z watched as a tiny Asian woman with a sword walked out of the shop carrying a box and blinked a few times to clear her eyes. She could have sworn the girl was black-and-white.

Jack was perusing the menus and so missed seeing the black and white woman entirely. "No, I get the craving thing. Had one myself earlier today." His grin was in no way smug. "I'm going to leave myself in your hands when it comes to selecting danish, Z, seeing as you're the girl with the craving. You order, I'll pay. It's a perfect division of labour."

Z considered the pastries. "Two raspberry danishes, please," she asked the clerk.

"Good choice." Jack handed over the ~~magically appearing money!~~. "Shall we?" he asked, waving at a table.

~~Slightly psychic money?~~ Z took the danishes from the clerk, who seemed relieved neither of them was a cheesecake ninja, and said, "Yes, we shall," as she started toward the table.

With an exaggerated bow, Jack pulled a chair out for Z, then grabbed the one across from it. "Ah, sweet things. There's not much better in the world than good food mixed with good company." He leaned his elbow on the table, rested his head on his hand, and smiled at her.

"You're very good at this, you know."

Bemused, Jack lifted his head off his hand and stared at her. "Good at what?"

"Not that I'm complaining for a heartbeat," Z assured him, breaking off a piece of her danish. "So. Tell me about yourself. I've already gotten emo all over you today."

Still bemused by the 'good at this' comment, Jack considered what to tell her. "What do you want to know? And you're welcome to emo over all me whenever you like, I think I can handle it. Broad shoulders and all that."

"What brings you to Fandom? Where are you from that a multiplying girl doesn't weird you the heck out? That sort of thing."

"Oh, the simple stuff." Jack pulled a piece off his danish and chewed it thoughtfully. "I'm not sure what brings me to Fandom High, exactly. There's kind of a gap in my memories." He shrugged. "I was born in the fifty-first century. Multiplying girls aren't something I've ever encountered, but I've seen plenty of strange things and people are people, whether they've got fur, feathers, or can make copies of themselves."

"Wow. The fifty-first century seems like a really long way away."

Laughing, Jack said, "Nah, it's just the blink of an eye away. What about you? What's your story? What brings you here?"

"Well, I got arrested, and SPD gave me the choice of jail time in a little bitty card thing or going to school here, then becoming a cop. Due to my 'special skills,' I think."

Jack took a moment to process that. "So this was, what, a second chance? Your parents didn't have any objection to you being snapped up for a future in law enforcement?" He paused. "And how do you do jail time in a little bitty card?"

"I'm still trying to figure out the card thing myself. My boss assures me they can feed the prisoners, though, so that's reassuring. And I don't know my parents. I'm your classic hard-luck story, I guess."

Jack laughed quietly at that. "I'm glad they can feed them, otherwise it wouldn't be so much a jail as a morgue." He pulled another piece of danish off and twirled it between his fingers. "Classics become classics for a reason, I guess. You can count me in on the whole no parents thing."

"I dunno what I thought, that it might be like stasis or something. They can't give the prisoners mail, though. I checked." Z tore another chunk off her danish. "It kinda sucks, doesn't it? The no parents thing."

"Mmmm, yes and no on the parents thing. I never had them, and if they didn't want me the feeling's pretty much mutual." A half smile made a brief appearance. "Might have made life a lot easier though. Is there someone in that little bitty jail you want to send mail to?"

"My best friend." Z chuckled as she realized something. "Jack, actually. We got arrested together. It was his fault. He got this idea that we could steal clothes for the homeless aliens."

((And now, I'm going to be unconscious for a while. Finish this later?))

Jack looked pleased at the revelation. "It's a good name." Dropping the uneaten piece of danish on the plate, he looked at her closely. "They didn't give Jack the same deal they gave you?"

[Yup, tomorrow sometime works. Sleep well!]

Z looked kind of sad. "They did. But he turned them down. He was always sort of a moron like that. Going on about helping people, and then we're given a chance to really help people, and what does he do? He decides he'd rather rot in jail!"

"Maybe it's just that he wanted it to be on his terms? I can kind of relate to that." Jack reached for her hand, drawn by the sad look. "Having a future forced on you, even if it's what you want, makes a lot of people angry. Angry people make strange choices."
