All and Sundries//[06/21]

After opening the store, Seras sat behind the counter and perused a copy of the school newspaper that she'd ~~handwavily~~ picked up on her way to work.

She remembered Blair's interviewing her for his article, so she read it with some interest.

Then blinked and read it again.

Right. After work, she was going to have a talk with 'Dalter Wornez'.

All and Sundries is open.

"Open air," she replied. "So he can see where we're going. I thought about a picnic basket but I know I wouldn't want to ride around in the dark."

"Open air, it is," said Seras, coming around from behind the counter and leading the way, "Oh. I don't think any of these baskets are lined, really. Do you need a towel or a blanket or something?"

"I think I'm okay on that," Isabel said as she followed Seras. "I've got a few extra towels up in my room. I do need to pick up some mealworms though if you have them. I checked up on hedgehog diets and it's mostly insects with a little bit of fruits and vegetables." She laughed, "I promised him I'd cook him a nice dinner once he's back to normal."

Mealworms?

Seras sighed and closed her eyes.

"Baldrick!" she called out, "I think you've got a customer!"

The small man shuffled over from his corner of the store and regarded the two girls.

"'ello, Miss. 'Ow kin I 'elp you?"

Without thinking, Isabel took a step back. "Um, a small container of mealworms? Would you have it? Please?"

"Mealeyworms, eh? Did ye want them in the larval or beetle stage, then?" said Baldrick, shuffling a touch closer, "Or a nice mix've the two?"

[*giggles*]

She took another step back, frowning when a shelf blocked her way. "Larval would be fine thank you."

Baldrick nodded smartly.

"Larval it is, Miss," he said and hustled off towards the back of the store.

Seras sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Mr. Kent came in looking for duck food the other week," she said, "Baldrick ended up selling him some grubs, and...since then he's expanded. Mealworms, centipedes, crickets...Come to Baldrick for all your insecty needs."

"I might have to. Not only do I have to feed Greg, I'm babysitting my old roommates frog," Isabel said. "Last week my friend was a fox and I was looking after him. I think I'm going to hang a sign on my door that says boarding kennel."

"Considering the shape shifty tendencies of Fandom, you'd end up with one hell of a menagerie."

[Gotcha]

"I think I need to ask the principal if she could arrange a few classes on the care and feeding of small animals," she laughed. "Just so we're all prepared."

"You know, that's really not a bad idea. Or maybe they should sort of hold a mini conference on what to do when your friend turns into something small and fuzzy. Or spiney, as the case may be. Print up pamphlets or something."

"No it's not. And that would be perfect," Isabel said, picking a basket (http://www.simplybaskets.com/files/lg_Antiqued_Mt._Lebanon_Shaker_Ash_Market_Basket_A.jpg) up off the shelf. "Big enough to fit him comfortably, but not too big to carry around."

Seras nodded.

"Excellent grip on the handle, too. No splinters."

"And that is important," she grinned. "I have enough to worry about with his spikes. So what do I owe you then?"

"Well, let's see," said Seras, walking over to the cash. She rang in the basked, then called out "Almost ready with those mealworms, Baldrick!"

"Soon now," replied a voice from the back of the store, "I 'ave to dig for the slippery little buggers."

Isabel shuddered. "He so owes me a nice night out after this."

Before Seras could reply, Baldrick shuffled up with a small container in his hand, about the size of a film cannister. He shook it, and a faint rustling sort of rattle could be heard.

"Here y'are miss. One small order of mealworms. Be sure to keep 'em in a cool darkish place or else they'll dry out."

Gingerly she took it from his hands. "Thank you," Isabel said weakly. She turned back to Seras, holding the container out from her body. "Dinner, a movie, a nice dessert and flowers. Possibly even poetry."

"Any time, Miss."

If Baldrick had had a hat, he would have tipped it. Instead, he nodded and shuffled on back to the other end of the store.

Seras rung in the mealworms and gave Isabel a small, plastic bag for the cannister.

"Do you want a bag for the basket, too," she said, giving her the total.

"No thanks," Isabel smiled as she deposited the canister in the bag and then put the bag into the basket. She pulled her money out of her pocket and gave Seras the correct amount, then looped the handle of the basket over her arm. "Might as well get used to carrying it. I'm probably going to be doing it for a few days."

Seras nodded.

"Right. And, if I were you, I'd insist on getting that thing about the dinner and the flowers and the poem in writing."

"Oh I will," Isabel grinned. "Thanks Seras! I'll see you around I'm sure."

"Absolutely," said Seras with a wave, "Best of luck with your new 'pet'"

Isabel laughed, waved one last time, and headed out the door.
