Caritas [Sunday Evening]

Greg opened up Caritas, mulling over the conversation from earlier in the day with his school-appointed and very grumpy little brother.

He whistled as he started to reassemble the band, and then took his place behind the bar and waving cheerfully to Jarod on the other side of the bar.

"Shall I confess my sins then?"

"I'm a preacher, not a priest."

"That's too bad," El said. "They would make for an interesting confession."

"You can tell me about it if you want, but God's not listening no matter who you tell."

"...Come again, amigo?"

Jesse had Tino set him up with another shot. "God's not in heaven and all is not right with the world."

"Only a crazy man would say all is right with the world," El said, finishing off his soda. "But why do you say that God is not in heaven?"

Jesse stubbed out his cigarette and lit another. "An angel told me."

El ordered another soda. "Metaphorical or literal?"

"Very literal." Hanging in chains, even. "God's on the run, and I'm gonna find him."

"...The Lord Almighty is on the run?" El asked.

"You make the universe, you make rules and even God's gotta live by 'em. There's a new kid on the block and he knows it and he don't like it."

El stared at this rather strange man. "What are you talking about?"

Jesse waved a hand. "Nuthin'. Who's going to believe all that crazy supernatural bullshit anyway?"

"I've seen guitar cases used as machine guns, rocket launchers, and flame throwers amigo. And there are what appear to be the walking dead up on stage."

Jesse snorted and took a drag off his cigarette. "God's on the run because an angel and a devil had a baby that might be as powerful as him."

El wasn't certain if this man was insane or not.

And he was rather frightened to find that he didn't care. "How does the devil feel about this?"

"He's dead. The new Angel of Death killed him."

"What happens to the devil when he dies?" El asked.

"He don't go to Hell, I'll tell you that," Jesse smirked and shook his head. "He just stops bein'."

"Interesting concept," El said. "I almost wonder if that would be preferable."

"Probably," Jesse said. "If God gets back to Heaven, he'll put a new devil in charge, though."

"I thought the Devil was in charge by virtue of rebelling against God."

"Yeah, well there are other rebel angels who could take his place."

"I suppose so," El said. He popped the top off his soda. "So, an important question for you, Reverend Custer. A very important question from a man who has followed the path of bringing people to count for a long time."

He took a drink from his soda.

"After your done, what then?"
