Caritas, Thursday, August 31st

Phoebe showed up early for her first night of work and greeted Tino warmly. He gave her a tour of the bar and the storage rooms were extra things were kept and then gave her a brief lesson on how to best reattach zombie parts for the band when they fell off.

After all of this, she wiped down the bar and then bounced around excitedly behind it as she waited for customers to arrive.

Both of them were pretty damned skilled at denial, so he managed a smile while he leaned into her a bit. "Who needs blisters and sore feet?"

"Exactly." And on to other, more pleasant things. "It's too bad you left before Pippi came along at the junkyard, today. We came up with a couple of ways to make our talents work together."

Walter shook his head and grinned. "No. She threw a car and I turned it into shrapnel."

"That'd be pretty useful," Nadia nodded with a smile. "If cars were allowed on the island."

"We started big and moved down from there. You know, a refrigerator and then sort of cannonballs. Working together we can throw them around corners now."

Walter, she knew, wasn't always the biggest person on subtlety. But still.

"By Zero's dad's band. And I got a few others myself, too. OH! And I found the perfect new ingredient for my hot sauce."

As much as Walter knew fear for anything short of near death experiences, he knew it then.

"What ingredient is that?"

"Jane said it was a pepper from Guatemala grown by inmates at an insane asylum. It's . . . really really shiny."

"And what do you plan to use it for?" And was he going to have to eat any of it?"

"At the moment? Making Joxer breathe fire. Also, a tasty treat for me."

And yes, Nadia was well aware that Walter didn't like spicy. She wasn't about to make him eat her super spicy concoction.

Nadia laughed, then sipped her drink. "Poor Joxer. I almost feel bad. He's just kind of dumb, you know?"

"I had noticed," Walter said, pulling out his cigarettes. "He seems to be happy that way."

Nadia nodded. "Plus, he generally doesn't hit on me and make me feel all slimy. That's a plus."

Walter glanced up from tapping out a cigarette and frowned. "Does anyone around here do that? I can't fault a person for hitting on you, but no one should make you feel slimy."
