Jarod, had done a little bit of research into Halloween and had spent the day preparing for the holiday. He set out a very large bowl of chocolate, as well as little bottles of massage oil, feathers and little containers of body paint. Anything else that was offered to trick or treaters was strictly a business deal between the trick or treater and the offerer.

For some reason, Jaye is now determined to get him to eat the Almond Joy. "It's only happy if you eat it," she says.

"Did it tell you that?" Jarod asked, looking skeptically at the bar.

"Nope. It's just one of those things everyone's supposed to know." She nods. Very convincing.

"Is there a list of these things somewhere? Because I never seem to know them, and it gets frustrating after a while."

"If there is, it's probably hidden in a museum somewhere," she says thoughtfully. "But that's why there are people like me. So we can tell you about those things."

He grinned and opened the Almond Joy. "So your purpose in life is to enlighten the masses on societal norms?"

"My real purpose in life is to live in a van down by the river," she lies. "The enlightening part is just a hobby."

"What color van and which river?" He asked. "I might want to buy you a vanwarming gift and need to know where to drop it off."

"Haven't decided yet. I just like the way it sounds. I'll let you know, though. I like presents."

"How do you feel about plants?"

"I thank them muchly for their oxygen production," she says. "Why, are you planning my birthday early?"

"I hadn't really thought about it," Jarod admitted, "I'm still trying to think of a proper van-warming gift. When is your birthday?"

"March 23. Still got a while to go," she says. "Yours was this summer, right?"

"Sort of," he tried to explain, "I don't know when it is for real, so I picked one that sounded good."

She frowns a little. "Seriously?"

He nodded and slid his hands into his pockets. "Yeah. Long, boring story involving a lost birth certificate."

"That sucks," Jaye says. "But at least you get to pick when. You're not stuck with a birthday on a holiday or anything."

"Having a birthday on a holiday is bad?" Jarod wondered if he should be taking notes.

"Well, the attention's not really on you then," she explains. "The plus side is that you probably get the day of school, and maybe work. The downside is that everyone's more worried about their holiday plans, and might get shafted out of presents."

"And presents are important," he nodded, not quite understanding. "But why do people give them?"

Jaye pauses.

And has no idea what the actual reason is.

So she answers, "Because that's one of those social mores everyone can agree on."

"Well, thank you for telling me, then. I wouldn't want to offend someone by accident."

"See, I'm telling you, I'm good at this," she says.

He laughed. "You are. You make a good guru, Jaye."

She grins and says, "If you really want to get me a van warming present, a plaque saying 'Jaye Tyler, guru'... That would rule."
