Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 07/02 ]

After hanging out at the meet-and-greet earlier that morning, Chad at least didn't need to take time for lunch before getting to work after opening the store, because, hey, food. He did need coffee, though. Lots of it, because he'd gotten up early for that thing. Earlier than he had in a while. And he knew he'd actually have to make a habit out of this early thing for his workshops. He grunted, and drank more coffee.

"I left just after graduation ~~whenever the hell that was. . . .~~. So I knew about the school exploding."

"Oh, yeah! The school exploding! Forgot about that."

Bad memory about stuff, indeed.

". . . Yeah." Nadia fidgeted for a moment before shoving her hands in her pockets. "So, yeah. Just a couple months then, right?"

Chad nodded. "Yup. Just the one summer term, then. Haven't even missed any big invasions, except these little guys from this meteorite that turned all evil when they heard good music."

Nadia blinked. "Okay, that might be weird even for Fandom. And . . . everyone's still okay, right? No big disasters, or anything?"

"Not since the school blew up, no," Chad said, "unless I'm forgetting something. Oh, and the fall of Empire, but we covered that."

Nadia sighed. "Yeah. Yeah, I think we did." She looked around the store, again. "There's this saying, that once you leave, you can't actually go back home, again. Like, if you do, it won't be the same, anyway, or if it is, you're not the same . . . . And you know what? That kind of sucks."

Chad thought about this for a moment before coming up with what he might think about the matter. "But then there are all sorts of new things there that you never would have had before. I mean, like when I went back home to Mexico. Nothing like what I expected. Wasn't the same at all. Same as when I went to Japan with Ted. Different, yeah, but...still nice."

Nadia shrugged. "Yeah, I guess. I mean . . . guess I shouldn't judge an entire island by one seventies gay porn emporium. . . ."

Chad winced a little. "Melody means well," Chad assured her, "and she's nice, if a little spacey. And, she did buy the place, so, really, she could turn it into a seventies gay porn emporium if she wanted to." He looked around the relatively empty store. "Would probably get more business, 'specially on this island."

"Empire was always quiet when I worked here, too. And, well, she likes cats, can't really fault her for that. . . ."

"I like having the cats here," Chad admitted. "And no one's complained, and Prince Oscar Pedro loved playing with Flopsy, Mopsy, and...uh...that other one."

That got an eyebrow raise out of her. "Okay, first, who's Prince Oscar Pedro? Second, 'that other one'?"

"I can never remember the third one's name," Chad admitted, and, spotting Cottontail over by the Blues section, he nodded her out. "That one. And Prince Oscar Pedro is my cat. Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun."

Pause. "The third. You've gotta meet him, Nadia. He's the best kitten ever. No offense, Furball."

Furrball blinked emotionlessly at Chad. He was, he felt, rather obviously NOT a kitten, anyway.

Nadia nodded. "I'd like that. And that's . . . that's one hell of a name you gave him. No wonder you can't remember your boss' cat's name. Your head is filled with Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun III. Please tell me he has a nickname."

Chad nodded. "Uh, yeah. Any variation of the names. Some call him just Oscar, or Oscar Pedro. I use Prince Oscar Pedro most, but sometimes when I talk to him, he's just Neko-kun, 'cause he likes Japanese best."

Nadia nodded. Oh no, she wasn't humoring him at all. "I bet he does. Maybe Furrball could meet him. He doesn't get to hang out with many other cats."

"Oscar Pedro loves other cats," Chad told her, "so yeah, stop by sometime when he's stopped freaking out over all the people and they can play. Or I'll stop by your room, or something. Whatever. Or bring Furball here on Tuesday, and it can be, like, Caturday, or something."

Although, yes, every day was Caturday, really.

Nadia laughed. "Or we could do all three, somehow. As long as Teddy's okay with the room thing."

"Why would Ted--"

And then Chad answered his own question in his head, which now ducked slightly. "Oh. Uh...y...yeah, should be okay."

Because that was all a while ago, right? And a lot can happen in a few months, and Teddy wouldn't...

Yeah, Chad knew he wasn't fooling anyone, least of all himself with that reasoning, but, really, if you thought about it (in a different angle, at any rate), it shouldn't be a problem anymore, really.

Nadia nodded. "Okay. I mean . . . it's not like anything like that would happen again," despite the fact that she was now, sadly, single. "Just a cat play-date. Only kind of date at all. Not even a date, not really . . . Just make sure, okay? I don't want him to think we're being sneaky or something."

Chad nodded back. "That's a good idea. I'll do that. An' he can be there, too, if he wants, even though he doesn't have a cat."

"Definitely." She didn't have a whole lot of good friends left on the island, so she wanted to make sure she hung onto the ones she did have. "That wouldn't be a problem at all." As long as Teddy would be able to stand being in the same room with her, after what she'd done last spring.

What both of them had done...But Chad was going to try not to think about that. "Good," he said, then smiled lightly. "S'good to see you back, Nadia."

Nadia smiled back. "Thanks. I think it might be good to be back, too. I'll see you around, right?"
