Jaina got to work on time, set up, and then stood leaning against the counter, massaging her neck. Apparently sleeping on the floor put kinks in it. Who knew?

Anakin walked into the bar, hoping rather in vain for a quiet night.

His expression darkened as he watched Jaina rubbing her neck. "That Woman didn't do anything to you, did she?" he asked.

"Hm?" she said, frowning, and then she got it. "Oh, no. I haven't even met her. I did, however, sleep in the hall after her announcement."

Anakin gave her a proud smile. "Good girl," he said. "Rules that make no sense are rules to be ignored. When there were vampires roaming the island, there was a reason for a curfew. 'Because I said so' has never been a compelling reason for me."

"She put down a rule saying no one could talk about her. I'm not thinking she's rational enough to be listened to," Jaina said.

Anakin's expression made it clear just how much that particular rule had impressed him. "It doesn't make her less dangerous," he warned. "Power without the conscience to hold yourself back--you don't need me to fill in those blanks."

"No, I realize. But I also get the feeling she's going to end up tied up in a closet somewhere and left there pretty soon," she said. "It's impressive when I feel like everyone else has this sort of thing covered."

Anakin looked thoughtful. "The students here for the most part can take care of themselves. But there's an arrogance that goes with it our temporary principal is finding unappealing. One of my best friends spent most of a class as various animals two years ago." He shrugged. "Personally, if I could get away with it, I'd probably hex half of the school, too. But there has to be a reason for it. 'Because I can' doesn't plot for me."
