Jaina got to work on time, set up, and then stood leaning against the counter, massaging her neck. Apparently sleeping on the floor put kinks in it. Who knew?

"Where exactly are you from in your timeline?" she wondered. "I mean, I know the obvious..." Because he was here, after all.

"The second Death Star blew up back in the Spring," Anakin said. "Things...got a little complicated."

"Rebuilding? Border fighting?" she guessed.

"Both," Anakin said with a nod. "The Empire has split into the moffs and the admirals and the governors and the petty thieves. It's better than Palpatine, but not by much right now."

"It'll lighten up. It'll just take some time," said Jaina. "The thing about that kind of fighting is that they tend to burn themselves our or kill each other off in the struggle."

"That's not exactly reassuring, Jaina," Anakin said with a wry smile.

"Sorry, I missed the part where I was supposed to be," she grinned. "The Empire fell. They don't have the structure they need to be a longterm, stable threat to anything."

Except Thrawn, but she figured that was probably one of those things that might mess up the timeline.

Anakin's forehead furrowed. "There are a couple out there that might be problems...Palpatine didn't pick everyone because they were easily manipulated. Just most of them."

"And some of them can probably be reasoned with," she pointed out." Which is what it could very well come down to. Things can play out in a lot of different ways, but while the Empire scrambles to pick up their own pieces, there's rebuilding going on of another sort they're going to have to deal with. And if by then things really aren't in their favor, they're more likely to notice where they actually stand."

"Is this wishful thinking or dancing around how it happens?" Anakin asked as he sipped his drink.

"I'm not big on wishful thinking. I don't know the details of everything that happened right afterwards. But I do know how this sort of thing tends to work," Jaina said. "There might always be someone clinging to one ideal or trying to mutate the idea for their own purposes, but if they can't back it up, it won't work. That part might have been dancing around it."

Anakin snorted. "I can think of about ten names of beings arrogant enough to try off the top of my head," he said, swirling his drink in his hand. "And that's not even counting Imperial Center."

"The Empire had some real winners," she said dryly.

"The Republic wasn't exactly full of saints either," Anakin said quietly. "All beings -- or most, anyway -- crave power. They were too busy carving out their own little areas to wake up and see what was happening until it was far too late."

"Well, it's like that saying, about how those who want power shouldn't actually have it," she said. "That politics."

"You have to want it a little," Anakin replied. "Beings who are content to lie around and do nothing aren't going to shake the galaxy, either. But the moment you become more concerned about how it affects you, rather than others...that's the turning point." He sipped from his glass. "And not just in politics."

"Point," she said. "But I still don't think it's necessary to want it. I think it should be more necessary to want to do some good. Politics should be about the people, not the person telling them what to do."

Anakin gave her a rueful smile. "You've been aware for more than fifteen minutes. How does the real work actually work?"
