Turtle & Canary; Sunday [10/14]

Victor knew that he probably shouldn't be working on his creation behind the counter, but he didn't care. Now that he had some parts he needed to get this thing built as soon as he could.

Apu didn't appreciate the mess. Victor didn't care about that either.

Hoshi dropped by to say hi to Turtle, but she stopped short when she saw who was working. "What are you doing here?" she asked.

"Working," Victor said. "Why else would I be behind the counter?"

"You might have kidnapped Turtle and commandeered the store," suggested Hoshi.

"If I had commandeered the store, why would I be wearing an apron?" Victor asked.

"Because you didn't want to get your clothes dirty with all this mess?" asked Hoshi, waving at all the robot parts.

"I'm an inventor. I know that messes can be cleaned," Victor said. "As it is, Wexler is one of the few people on this island whose presence I can tolerate."

"Only a few people? I'm actually surprised. I assumed that there's no one you could get along with," said Hoshi.

"Not everyone is as infuriating as you," Victor said coolly.

"I'll take that as a compliment," said Hoshi.

"If you wish," Victor said. "Is there anything you want, or did you just come here to be insulted... I mean, complimented?"

"I'd like a Grape Judas squishy, and I was wondering if you knew where I could find Turtle," said Hoshi. She would have said please but she didn't feel like being polite.

"She rarely comes in on Sundays," Victor said, filling a cup with the Squishy. "I'd suggest checking her room or calling her."

"I'll do that," said Hoshi, putting her money on the counter. At least she'd finally gotten the hang of using paper currency.

Victor put the Squishy on the counter, took the money~~, and gave back whatever change was appropriate~~. "Your drink," he said.

"Aren't you going to thank me for shopping here today?" asked Hoshi.

"That would suggest that I'm thankful you came in here," Victor noted.

"But I'm the customer. You're supposed to thank me for keeping you in business," insisted Hoshi.

"I suppose I'm also supposed to smile and wish you a good day," Victor considered. "That's not likely to happen either."

"Well, then, I'm not leaving until you smile, thank me for shopping and tell me to have a good day," said Hoshi.

"Then I'd advise you to make yourself comfortable," Victor said, going back to his parts.

"Okay. What are you making, anyway?" asked Hoshi. She could be really stubborn when she wanted to and this one was one of those times.

"That is my business and mine alone," Victor said. Like he was going to tell anyone.

Hoshi may have muttered a rude comment in Russian, but she wasn't going to admit to it.

Artoo zipped into the store, tweetling cheerfully.

He had another load of parts--and a radio squirrel's fedora--resting on the tray on his dome.

Victor nodded to the droid. "This is appreciated," he said. "Thank you."

It was very rare for Victor to actually thank beings. It was easier when they provided him assistance.

He didn't want to know why he had a fedora, though. He really didn't.

Artoo might've taken a wee detour to chase some radio squirrels.

He'd never admit it.

He beeped back a polite acknowledgment, then zipped back out the door.

I can do the robot.

Not well.

Pfft. Amateur.
