She probably could've put a sign out and closed the joint, her boss seemed like the type who'd go for "Closed on Account of Plague." But really, Faith didn't have anything better to do. She sucked with research and science crap. She sucked with sick people. She wasn't sick herself, probably wouldn't be considering Slayer healing shit. And hell, she probably wasn't the only one in this town who could use a drink.

So Caritas was open. Even if its bartender was pacing like a caged animal.

Squall stalked in, claimed a seat, and gave the bar a thump. "Something strong."

"You got it," Faith said. She grabbed a bottle of the hardest liquor that was in arm's reach and poured Squall a glass from it.

While she was at it, she poured herself a glass, too, and knocked it back.

"Wonder if they got some Everclear around here," Faith said, filling up both glasses. "Gets you fucked up much faster."

Faith searched a little before producing a large clear bottle. "Not supposed to drink this shit straight," she said, fumbling with two more glasses. "But I don't give a fuck if you don't."

After her shift at the town hall Jenny headed for the nearest open bar. "Hit me," she said to the girl behind the bar, not even noticing that she was drop-dead gorgeous at the moment. "Vodka for starters."

"You got it," Faith said, getting out a glass and pouring it full. "We switched to Everclear straight up, if the vodka don't work."

Yeah, the girl looked young. Fuck it. Everybody on this damn island needed some liquor.

"Ah, Everclear," Jenny said as she dug around in her jacket for a pack of cigs. "My old friend and enemy. I'll take that." She knocked back her vodka and smacked the glass down on the counter. Then she took a cigarette, put it in her mouth, and lit it with a spark between her forefinger and thumb. "I assume I can smoke," she mumbled around it, "this being a bar."

"Absolutely," Faith said, and then, struck by a thought, pulled out her own pack. "And why the fuck am I not smoking?"

She grabbed the bottle of Everclear and poured some for the girl. "It ain't classy, but it gets the job done. Feels like you're a step up from drinking rubbing alcohol, but fuck it."

"That's the spirit," Jenny said, puffing out smoke with her words. "I did that once," she said, referring to the rubbing alcohol, though it might not be clear. "In the eighties. I think it caused a recession."

Jenny snorted and raised her glass at him. "I'd take you up on that, but at this rate I suspect I may be the last one standing."

There are probably a dozen rules about going to an establishment where your parolee is tending bar to get a drink.

Dale's ignoring the rules for the moment.

He heads to the bar and grabs a stool. "I could use a scotch when you get a moment."

"Got a moment right now," she said, nodding to Dale. Trying not to look as surprised as she felt. She poured him a glass of Scotch, no ice, and kept the bottle handy. "If you need something stronger, you lemme know."

"Bacardi 151," Faith said, looking over the bottles. "Rum. Then you get into the good shit. We've been knocking back Everclear. You're supposed to mix it, but ... nobody drinks it for taste anyway. Not really a night to stick with daquiris and college-girl shit."
