A.J.? Sketching and drawing at the diner instead of working? Surely, you jest. But he did have a new, randomly purchased sketchbook to start filling up, you see...
"No mustard on mine," she said, looking down as he wrote. But his explanation of her drawing really, truly surprised her. "That's... wow. I'm impressed you see all of that in what I did, A.J. The lines were simple, I know it looked so elementary, especially compared to what you do. But... wow, thank you. Chocolate, please."
Well, he was, of course, mostly just making up typical art critic bullshit, but Annette didn't need to know that. "And chocolate," he finished the order, looked it over and then shouted at the kitchen boys for attention so he could hand it over to them. He turned back to Annette with a grin, moving toward the milkshake stuff. "And, besides, Annette, there's art in everything, it's just about finding it, y'know? These milkshakes? Just as much masterpieces, only they're not as long lasting as my paintings, y'know?"
"Well," A.J. said, talking as he worked, scooping ice cream into the blender, "it's about balance and composition, right, just like in a drawing. Can't have too much shading, have to keep placement in mind, can't overcrowd the picture. Can't have too much ice cream or not enough milk, or not blend it enough. Lots of different kinds of art. Drawing, painting, dancing, milkshake making, horseback riding," pause, with a slightly scandalous lift of his eyebrow, "lovemaking." Not that he'd been doing much of that lately, but he figured it was a cool thing to say. "Art in everything, Annette. Everything."
And, of once, he actually finished what he was saying before turning on the blender.
And Annette had to wait until he turned off the blender before she could respond back, though the time did allow for her to think about what he said. "I see now. There are several different dances I know and yeah, they can be considered art. When done right, they're beautiful. Horseback riding also. It's amazing how you feel when you run a horse... and yeah, I guess lovemaking too," though she's not done any of that lately. And it was a cool thing to say because she could imagine it.
"See?" A.J. grinned as he set down a napkin and then set the milkshake on top of it for Annette. "I know what I'm talking about here, oh ye of little faith."
"I have complete faith, A.J.," she said, smiling at him. "Trust me in that." She took a healthy sip of her shake, declaring after she swallowed, "Omigod, it's perfect!"
"Oh, please," A.J. said. "You've got football and cheerleading, right? You probably eat better than I do, too, and I don't get fat, so you're probably pretty safe."
"Doesn't need to be," A.J. said. "There's running. Just ask Troy; I've managed to almost nearly knock myself out cold running with him once. There's an art in everything, Annette, and when it comes to sports, I ain't got nooooo talent."
She continued to laugh, trying to picture him running and falling. "Omigod, you kill me. You will be pleased to know that I haven't any talent with football either. I mean, I lifted my shirt to get Dean to stop during a game last year so I could steal his flag." That had been hilarious even though she didn't get his flag.
Well, that was a...weird response. But A.J. felt like a lot of Annette's responses were like that, so he didn't dwell on it. He just gave a lame smile and a shrug, and said, "Thanks....Glad you like it."
Annette sometimes lived in her own little world of hypotheticals. She thought she knew why the tactic wouldn't work on him, but it may not be what he meant. She assumed she knew. She assumed she knew a lot of things.
Yeah, they still didn't like A.J. very much. He ducked his head, rubbing the back of his neck. "Sure, so long as you don't mind me having to get up every once in a while if someone else comes in."
