"I learn fast," he smirked, aware that she may have been mocking him.

"So you're on this island? What was the school thinking, introducing a horde of mercs onto a place where there are children about?" Kethry asked.

Roy grimaced even as he was surprised hearing this remark coming from her. "I don't think it was the school's decision. Frankly, I don't know whose decision it was but I'm not all too impressed," he gave her an apologetic look. "Nothing personal."

She shrugged though looked slightly amused. "Don't worry. I've decided our Captain sent us here as a joke."

He couldn't quite help chuckling. "It's not your thing then?"

The look Kethry gave him spoke volumes. "It's not my thing. I'm a mage. We fight in a bonded company."

He raised an eyebrow for a moment, unable to help himself. "Perhaps he hoped to draw some more people to your... company."

"She," Kethry replied immediately. "And no. We don't recruit like this. People who are good enough find us."

"Ah," he nodded slowly. "Must be a joke then. At least you got chance to taste the island's coffee?"

She shook her head, watching him. "What are you? Regular military?"

Roy laughed. "Are only military forces allowed to enjoy coffee? Personally, I prefer whiskey but it's too early for that."

"No, the look in your eye," Kethry said

He tilted his head back to watch her. "What look is that?"

"The one that says 'I'm a soldier, but at least I don't fight for pay,'" Kethry told him. "Just about all regular soldiers think that way about mercs." She shrugged.

He glanced back at the stage for a moment. "It's not about money but loyalties," he clarified.

Re: Audience Mingling

[identity profile] oathboundmercs.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"And you think it's less honourable to give loyalties to a captain than to a country?"

He let out a breath and shook his head. "I'd hope not," he said honestly. "But there's a worry that if someone fighting alongside you is fighting for a different thing like money that the next day they'll turn against you if someone pays them more."

Kethry shook her head. "We don't work that way. Our Captain picks our jobs, signs a contract, and we stay on that side for the length of the contract. If the terms are breached by the other party, we leave the battle field."
