Caritas [Thursday evening]

After the town meeting, Aravis had decided she needed a drink.

Of course, tonight would be the night that that drunk woman from the radio didn't show up to her stupid job. And that ineffective young man had taken one look at the blade sheathed at her hip and headed into the back. Stupid boy.

Aravis wasn't entirely certain how it happened -- stubbornness, anger at Tino, a need to get her mind off things -- but she ended up behind the bar, pouring herself a glass of wine.

She could man the bar tonight. Pity on anyone who wanted anything particularly complicated to drink.

Don't order anything complicated if you want it properly made.

Gavin wasn't following Aravis. But, oddly enough, he ended up in Caritas too, at the end of the bar with a water.

Just sitting quietly, keeping an eye on...things. Not her, of course not, she could take care of herself.

But, if she happened to be in the scope of what he was keeping an eye on, well, that wasn't his fault.

Aravis was perfectly content to pretend everything was just fine, thank you very much.

"Hello. Do you want something to drink besides water?"

Aravis could totally make drinks. Really.

"Got a specialty?" Gavin asked.

"Yes, I've been tending bar for so many years," Aravis said, nodding. "Of course."

The bar, it should be noted, just emphasized how short she was.

"Make me something with a personal touch," he said, smiling. "Something from the heart."

Aravis considered, and then ducked behind the bar.

After a moment, she poured him something spicy-smelling and amber-colored, sliding it over. "Mead. We drink it at home. It's honey and spices, but it still has a kick."

"Never had mead," he said, taking the glass and taking a sip. It was...strongly sweet and strong and he had to blink a few times just to clear his head. "It's good. It's sweet. Thick. Guessing that's the honey?"

She nodded, resting her chin in a hand. "We drink it in Archenland. It keeps forever. And it's strong. I'm not allowed to have it."

"How do you know how to make it?" Gavin asked, taking another drink. "And you could have it now."

"I opened the bottle and poured it," she said, smiling a little. "I've no idea how to make it. Ladies aren't trained in it. And there's a reason I shouldn't have it."

"It's not going to turn me into a girl, is it?" Gavin asked, peering at the drink. "I make an ugly girl."

"Huh, I hope not," Aravis said, now peering at the mead.

"If I turn into a girl, you're in so much trouble," he said, fixing her with a mock glare. "So much trouble."

"I'm terrified," she said, deadpan.

"You should be," he said lightly. "You should sing."

"I think the town's endured enough pain," Aravis said, raising a brow.

"Not even a little song?" Gavin teased. "A few notes? Just for me?"

"La la la," she said flatly.

"La la la," he said, pitching his voice higher and squeakier. "See?"

"I don't sound like that!" she protested, frowning.

"I didn't say you did," Gavin said quickly. "That was me! And my singing voice!"

"Oh, then yours is even worse than mine," she said, wrinkling her nose.

"Of course it is," he said, nodding. "I suck at singing. There's no need to sing when you fly. If there was, I'd have crashed a long time ago."

"It might be entertaining," she pointed out. "People sing when they ride. Those who don't fall off, I mean."

Gavin dipped a few fingers into his mead and then flicked it at her.

"Can't deal with the truth?" she asked, having to laugh and duck.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said and flicked some more mead at her. "You remember things wrong."

"Um, I wasn't even there," she pointed out, giggling and ducking. "It's everyone else who seems to remember wrong and enjoy passing it on."

"Everyone remembers wrong," he agreed. "Yep. That's it. I didn't fall off nothing."

"Everyone hallucinated it?" she asked curiously.

"Yup," Gavin said and flicked some more mead. "Everyone but me."

Aravis flicked some of her wine at him. "Interesting."

"Very," he said and flicked some mead back. "I'm full of interesting stories!"

"And lies, apparently."

"Don't be jealous," he said, grinning and winking. "I know you wanna be like me."

"Oh yes. I ache with the dire need to mimic you," Aravis said flatly.

Away from the wee scary Tarkheena.

Aravis is cranky. Mod a scared Tino if you'd like. :D
