Luke's Diner; Thursday [ 06/05 ]

Cal figured it would be another slow day like all his other Thursdays have been, so, when he wasn't cleaning up for in the kitchen, he was going through his scenes in the play again, trying to keep everything Tennant had said in mind.

And then he remembered that he didn't really care, set it aside, and did something else for a bit. He eventually returned, though. Only so many time you can straighten a napkin holder, after all.

"Hit me with whatever you think belongs on there," Jaina said. "If I'm gonna try new things, I should do it right."

"That," Cal commented as he loaded the two dogs with ketchup, mustard, relish, and onions, before presenting them to Jaina, who he knew was just probably dying of excitement over there, "is an excellent answer. Enjoy. Next time you can try 'em with chili."

Jaina was definitely curious, even with the whole cow parts description. "Okay," she said, using both hands to pick up the hot dog, "here goes."

She took a bite, chewed it thoughtfully and swallowed before deciding, "It's actually good."

"Ha! See." Cal grinned with pride, which he knew was kind of silly. He couldn't help it, though. Small and stupid as hot dogs may be, there was still a bit of pride in them. It was a thing. Genetics. Making Milton, somehow, proud. "And you doubted me."

"I didn't say I doubted you," she insisted. "I doubted your ingredient recap. Two very different things."

"Fair enough," Cal admitted. "And I can't blame you there. Those things are, like, among the best of those special foods that, even if you're absolutely disgusted about what they're made of, you can't help but like eating them, I swear..."

"Of course, I might be biased. My dad made his fortune thanks to hot dogs, so I owe a lot to them."

"If he made a fortune, they really must be special," she agreed. "So this is like the family business?"

"Exactly," Cal's slightly proud smile remained. "All started out with just some hole-in-the-wall dinner in Detroit. The Zebra Room, established by my grandfather. My older brother, he was a total nerd and was constantly experimenting with stuff, figured out how to work a hot dog to make them plump up like that. Dad ran with it, started making him himself and made it a chain, the chain spread, and the Stephanides' moved up in the world."

"Impressive," she said. She actually liked hearing stories like that. It was very different than what she was used to, and sometimes you needed that. "Is it something you're planning on going into?"

Cal shook his head. "Nah, probably not. I might help, you know, if it turns out this writing thing is just a fluke, but my brother got the company after Dad died. It's all mostly in his hands, and, really, I'd assume he'd give his little brother a job, but there might not be a job for me by then with how he'd been driving it into the dirt like he has."

"He's one of those types that's good at the working part, but not so much the business side?" she guessed.

"Well," Cal shrugged a bit, grinning, "he wasn't really that great on the working side, either. He just got lucky with the hot dogs."

"Poor guy," she said with a little smile. "So you write instead?"

"Possibly; I'm going to give it a try. I..." Cal hesitated, carefully planning how to explain this without revealing too much; the chosen path left out practically everything. "...had access to my first typewriter when I was fourteen, was supposed to keep a bit of a journal on it. I liked the typing a lot, so maybe that's something. I don't really have any, you know, big ambitions or anything."

"You don't need them, really," Jaina said confidently. "As long as it's something you like doing."

Cal thought about this a little, and, slowly, his head began to bob. "I like that," he decided. "You can relate that to my roommate, too, when he starts getting irritated at constantly having to hear click-click-click-click-click-click ding!"

"I've never had to listen to the click-click sounds, so I can say it and not have to be too sympathetic to him," she assured him. "It works out."

"Excellent," Cal beamed. "I love when I can take advantage of my friends for my own benefit."

"It's what we're here for," she nodded.
