Turtle & Canary, Wednesday, 6/11

Today Amber was stuck in the book section, specifically checking out a trashy dime-store historical. Pretty soon she was sitting down cross-legged in the aisle, getting some serious reading in.

Aside from class, she'd probably be there all day.

Amber had said he only had to do this a couple times, so Cal figured he'd better get it done and over with, stopping into the store sometime before his class, but after his workout and a shower. And, no, he didn't use any of the fruity, smelly soaps in that shower, although he did use the hell out of the bar of soap he did have.

It really was going to develop into a complex, he feared. Either way, he drifted in, located the soaps and plucked out a small, blue koala bear shaped one, and then went to go pay, but didn't see Amber behind the counter. A small search through the store had her easily located, though.

"...They pay you for this?" he asked with a quick of his eyebrow.

Cal wasn't laughing at the jump, really. Not on the outside, at least. His head tilted. "What were you reading?"

It had to have been good if she was hiding it.

"Well," Cal said, crossing his arms over his chest and settling in a position that made it clear that, hey, he was comfortable, he didn't have any where to go for a while. Or fourth period, at any rate. "Learning what? Besides basic product knowledge?"

"Yeah?" Which actually sounded pretty interesting but, based on the fact that there was nothing particularly embarrassing about the history of pirates that would inspire Amber to feel the need to hide it, he wasn't sure he bought this answer. Part of him wondered if he should just shut up, because he knew he didn't want to push anything less it come back around that someone would push something from him, but...well, all was fair in love and soap wars. "Pirates are cool; what've you learned so far? I am, after all, all interested customer."

He gave the little koala bear soap in his hand a slight wave as if to prove that fact.

"Hey, I'm a man of my word," Cal said, giving the soap a little toss in his hand. Very little, because he doubted his ability to catch it if he tossed it too much, and then, despite himself, he laughed a little. "'Wenching'? Is that a technical term?"

"You clearly have an interest," Cal observed, "and so I guess I have one, too. And, I mean, hey, that book you were reading is clearly just a treasure trove of knowledge, and your job here is to sell me stuff, isn't it? Maybe you're just so good of a salesperson that I have an interest in that one. I'll be sure to tell your boss, or write up one of those little feedback cards..."

"It's cheaper if it's used, isn't it?"

That one was just...way to easy, and, really, the funny thing was, he wouldn't have really even cared what Amber was reading if she hadn't tried to hide it. In fact, he wasn't even sure if he really cared that much now; he just owed her for yesterday.

Cal tried...so hard, really...not to laugh, but he couldn't help it. And when he tried to stop, he found that all he could do was chuckle all the more. "Used that much?" he repeated, question in his voice. "Really? You must be a pirate expert by now, Amber."

"Well, you seem to like it an awful lot," Cal pointed out, barely fighting back his grin with a bit to the lip. "It must be some pretty good stuff..."

"Oh, right," Cal agreed, "because I'm so busy all the time."

He paused. For dramatic effect.

"I could flip through it right now," he pointed out, moving in to make a grab for the book to snatch it from Amber.

"Only one way to find out, really," Cal declared, turning away from Amber a little as he held up the book, high enough to get it well out of her reach, but still close enough that he could read it.

And read it he did, out loud, as he flipped through the pages looking for some of those key words he expected to find in book like this, settling on one of those fine passages to begin his dramatic reading on pirate...wenching. Truly inspired. Surely, Tennant would practically be cutting his tongue off with that razor blade if he knew he had such an actor in his midsts, bringing life to the vibrant purple prose with nary a giggle interspersed.

Although God only knew that those giggles were trying.

Her sails unfurled about his mast, indeed. This was priceless.
