Caritas - Sunday evening [Open]

Jolee was free from the horrors of the little blond boy for the first time in days. This was cause for a celebration.

The celebration was giving Tino a jaunty hat to wear.

Tino seemed happy with it. Hooray!

The HELP WANTED sign was still up.

The zombies wanted jaunty hats. But the hats would probably pull their scalps off.

Tino was pleased with his jaunty hat, as previously established.

That last wound to the head (which a jaunty hat just might have helped to prevent) was a doozy, and so Minsc was feeling that what he needed to smooth it over was a good, healthy round of drinks! He made his way to the tavern, had a seat at the bar, and gave his usual cheerful call for booze.

"Bring me a mug of your best moderately strong ale! And some water for my hamster!"

"Moderately strong?" Jolee asked. He shrugged and motioned for Tino to figure out which beer that was and serve it to Minsc. Jolee, meanwhile, filled a saucer with water.

After a moment, Tino felt that he was both fashionable and successful in his search. Both drinks were put in front of the pair. "Let me know if that works for you."

"Perfect!" Minsc declared, before he'd even touched his drink and while Boo was still edging toward the saucer for his. It wasn't long after, though, that Minsc remedied this, sweeping up the mug and, after a few deep gulps, having finished the whole thing off. "Ahhhh!" he said, appreciatively as he thunked the container down the bar. "That hits the spot. Why don't you get me another one of these? I have got at least a few days to make up for here."

Tino filled another mug and served it.

"Why's that?" Jolee asked. "Were you busy with someone from that island of menaces too?"

"I was passed out on my floor all weekend!" Minsc informed the bartender, sounding quite pleased with himself. "Took a nice clunk to the ol' noggin by some thingermajigig that packed a whollop of a punch! Takes a lot more than that to keep me out of commission, though!"

"It saved you a lot of hassle," Jolee said. "What I wouldn't have given to be unconscious instead of dealing with the Sithspawn that was tormenting me..."

Minsc straightened his shoulders, face taking on an expression of intrigue, complete with chin-stroking and everything. "...Sithspawn?" he asked. He didn't know the word, but, whatever it meant, it sounded...intriguing.

"It's a curse from my galaxy," Jolee explained. "I don't have a very high opinion of that Menace. And that's not just because I'm a cranky old man and he's young."

"What Menace?" It was like Minsc could hear the capital M, and that made it like danging a carrot in front of a very excitable horse. If there was a Menace around to be dealt with, and here Minsc was, resting on his laurels with a concussion all weekend...!

Well, it was a very bad day for goodness indeed when that happened.

He might have to find someone to make some Menace just to make up for it.

"It doesn't matter now. He's gone along with the rest of that other island," Jolee said. "It wasn't soon enough, though. I think the people around here who solve that kind of thing were taking their time just so I had to deal with that kid even longer."

"Oh." Minsc's shoulders sagged for a moment, in woeful consideration of the lost chance to banish a menace. But perhaps that was something that could serve as Sir Jeffrey's punishment for missing class, giving him another chance against a new menace. But still! It sounded very much as though good had triumphed, and that made Minsc happy.

Very happy. "But the job, it was done! Hooray for goodness! Hooray for banished menaces! Drinks for everyone!"

Jolee looked around and didn't see any other customers. "Of course," Jolee said. He poured a glass of water for himself and another one for Tino.

Tino wasn't getting to drink on the job.

"You should be able to get more information on what happened from other people. There was some kind of tournament, but I didn't bother following it. I'm too old to bother with anything but the end result."

"Oh, I hope there really isn't such a thing as too old for that kind of thing!" Minsc declared with widened eyes. "Otherwise, by the gods, why don't you just take a nice rusty short sword in my bowels and end it already, for there would be nothing more to look forward to!"

"Well, for one thing, I don't have any rusty short swords," Jolee answered. "Also, there's plenty to look forward to. Like complaining, and teaching young people lessons that will put them in their place."

Minsc frowned at the prospects of what it was he was supposed to be doing for his retirement. "Complaining," he said, "is no good. It is either put up or shut up. Complaining will give your position away to hungry trolls and gnolls, as well! But I have been doing the lesson one!"

"Well, if you play your cards right and get into a crash on the right planet, there's also being deemed a forest god by the locals," Jolee said. "And that involves fighting off deadly creatures at least twice a day, every day."

He thought Minsc might find that more appealing.

That it did. Oh, yes. That it did.

"Where do I sign up?" Minsc asked, with a deep and amused chuckle. "Now that sounds like a true utopia if I ever heard one! Plenty o' deadly creatures to fight off where I'm from, but the deifying bits get a little on the tricksy side. It's hard work for a merc."

"Ah. Then you wouldn't have liked it quite as much there. The locals only paid in tributes of food and crafts that I'm still not sure what exactly they were supposed to be," Jolee said.

"Oh, but you could have quite an interesting time finding out," Minsc said, now with a chuckle that seemed to suggest that he'd done something very similar before to very...crypticly morbid results.

"You have experience with that?" Jolee asked.

Somebody besides him could tell some stories for once, dammit!

"One word of advice for you, my friend!" Minsc said, lifting a finger of warning and brandishing a grin. "Never try on the spoils of a battle with an ogre with a fetish for belts without having someone look at them first! That poor dwarf! Just as ugly as a woman as he was a man!"

"Hmm. There's more of a story there, but I'm fairly sure I don't want to know any more about it. I'd congratulate you, but that happens more often than I'd care to admit," Jolee said.

"And here I thought that beating up ogres with belt fetishes that turn your party members into the opposite sex was something to get at least a mention in a history book," Minsc mused, scratching his head. "I guess...that is why I am in not so many history books."

"Oh, no, I'm sure it'll get a mention in most books," Jolee said. "But I'm personally more than satisfied with the short version."

If people wanted to make their own jaunty hats, this would be a convenient place to do it what with the tables and such.

I'm going to put a jaunty hat on my Amazon wishlist.
