Turtle and Canary, Monday (9/22)

Another invasion, and Sokka had sat it out again. He blamed not having a nemesis. Well, it's not that he didn't have a nemesis, it's just that he'd had a year-and-a-half-long confrontation with his nemesis that ended with his nemesis DATING HIS SISTER. So... Yeah. That had sort of been resolved.

Of course, the dirty looks Apu was giving him for loafing around on the job suggested that a new nemesis could be arranged.

Speaking of new nemeses, Sokka put crayon to tagboard and came up with the following sign:

NEMESIS SALE
25% off any item if you can somehow convince me that it's your mortal enemy.
10% off any item you plan to use in order to become someone else's nemesis.
5% off any item over $50 that you plan to throw at my head.

Today's Squishy flavors: Red, Blue, Your Mortal Enemy

"I'm certain we can find something in here to be our mortal enemies," Alice laughed, wandering through the aisles. "Some form of technology. I've money in my pocket and I'm eager to spend it, you know."

Warren was being unsociable again; this meant Warren had to be dragged out and forced to shop. That would teach him.

Warren was always unsociable. It was a very Warrenly thing to be.

So he was pretty much in a constant state of learning his lesson, he supposed, as he tripped along after Alice, as sullenly as possible.

"It's easier if you just consider everything here to be your nemesis," he decided. "Easier to just not bother taking the risk."

"We aren't here because it's easier," Alice noted. "If we were concerned with ease, I'd still be in an asylum. Easier to lie and be mad. Not any fun, though."

She glanced at the boxes. "Something with flashing colors," she decided. "I can pretend to be a savage, scared of its wild technology. I am Victorian."

"It's easy enough to call technology a nemesis," Warren mused. "A technopath tried to take over my last school. She could be controlling anything in here, I suppose. The Squishybot, the till, a cell phone display. You know. Stuff."

Flashing colors were as good a start as anything when looking for a nemesis. They usually meant something was about to blow up, according to the classes from his old school.

"If our nemesis is the Squishybot, then I say one of us distracts it by purchasing a Squishy, and the other unplugs it," she decided. "I've never tried a Squishy, you know. I suspect Turtle-Alice would be rather sad to hear it."

"Maybe we can convince the kid with the ponytail that the Squishy and whatever else in the store have both joined forces to overthrow us," Warren mused. "The squishy is... something's secret weapon."

Warren tended to melt Squishies. He was a fan of variety, here.

"He might be too afraid of Turtle to switch sides." She considered it. "So might I. Perhaps the Squishybot is to be left unharmed."

"Probably for the best," Warren mused. "Squishies just get squishier when I get my hands on them."

He considered for a moment longer.

"Do you have a phone?"

He didn't. He hated phones. But they'd probably be useful for... emergencies, or something.

"There's one in my room," she said, considering it. "It doesn't seem to be the variety that you can carry around. If you removed it from the wall, it stops working."

She smiled. "I thought you could turn your flames off again, when you were finished. Must all the Squishies fall prey?"

She was joking about fire; it was progress.

"Better the Squishies..." He smiled faintly. The fact that she was joking about fire was like progress in leaps and bounds. He could handle that. "Phones are supposed to be more convenient when you can carry them around. Maybe we should each get a cellular. Not like I'd use mine much, but at least it'd be there. In case the island got invaded or something, again."

He so would have called in sick yesterday, if he had a cell phone. And then he would have beat things up. It would have been a grand old time.

"We should keep a constant supply of Squishies around," she nodded. "To guard against such things. My, these look nothing like the phone back in our room. It's simply a receiver and a bit with numbers on it. These have screens and ... does that one really have a camera included?"

Convenient. She hadn't a camera, either.

Warren nodded and leaned in for a better look. Hey. Cameraphone.

And then he straightened up and smirked.

"All the better for staring at you with, like a good Nemesis would," he mused.

"We should take pictures of ourselves, with them," she said. "That could prove our accusations that the phones are stalking us. Is there nothing the phones wouldn't stoop to?"

"Phones are such nefarious sorts," Warren grunted, nodding a little. "We better pick a model that looks the most nefarious. Just to be certain that our nemesis is worthy."

The one he had his eye on, for example, was quite capable of taking a beating.

"I think my fear is one of generalized technology," she decided. "I'm still antiquated, of course, from my years in the past. What I fear most would have to be sleek. Silver. Nearly sentient in its own right."

She pointed to one in particular (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/alice/alicephone.jpg). "Such as that one. I believe I'm terrified of it. We are mortal enemies from this moment forward."

"You know, the best way to remain safe from your mortal enemy is to keep it as close to you as possible," Warren decided, making a reach for the black and silver version of the phone he had his eye on. "That way, you know for a fact that they're not going to try anything without you knowing about it first."

"I shall conquer my fear," she said, selecting her own phone. "But not until after I've earned a 25% discount for it. Let's see whether Sokka understands -- hmmm. One would think there should be a word for that phobia. There is for nearly everything else."

"For the fear of cellphones? I'm sure there is." Warren considered for a moment. "It's probably something simple, too, like... telephobia or... something."

Warren was not a master of fear classification, really.

"If Sokka doesn't understand, I'll settle for the 5% discount to throw it at his head, anyhow."

Warren liked throwing things. So sue him.

"Oh, he'll give us the 25%," Alice said, confidently. "Or I'll demand the 10%, as I plan to use the phone instead to become his nemesis, and call him all hours of the day and well into the evening. I shall harass him until I make him weep and beg for mercy, at which point he'll wonder aloud why he didn't just allow me 25% to start."

....

Okay. Warren had decided that Alice was quite possibly a criminal mastermind.

And he was perfectly fine with that.

"And here I was going to just threaten to beat him up," he mused.

Actually, he would have threatened to fry him alive. But he was being a little more tactful in the face of a girl who still wasn't so great with fire.

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Should he resist our threats, I fully support flinging both phones at his head," she nodded. "Possibly something larger, like a television set. I don't believe I could afford one, but I could certainly throw it at him and then tell him I don't need the discount, as I've decided not to purchase it after all."

Really, he had no idea. None.

Warren actually had himself a chuckle at that one.

"What? This merchandise is damaged, I don't want to waste my money on something that's been thrown across the room?" He grinned. "I should go shopping with you more often."

Re: Talk to Sokka

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"This is rather more violent than shopping normally gets," Alice said. "Which is to say, I approve. We should make a habit of this, whenever we need supplies."

"There's an art to this," Warren agreed. "We'll be the stuff of nightmares for customer service workers everywhere."

A pause.

"Nice phone."

Alice laughed. "We can't target Groovy Tunes, as I work there and I would hate to get fired. Also, music recordings are too nice to be smashed, except for the horrid ones, which I'm sure Chad wouldn't mind if I did destroy. Still. That's one off our list of potential targets. And thank you, I selected it myself."

"We'll have to take it easy on Fina too, then," Warren decided with a chuckle of his own. "The dishes suffer enough already when I'm on-duty, and I've only been working there for three weeks, now."
