Turtle & Canary; Saturday [ 09/27 ]

The toothache was still present, but it had soothed to a point where Turtle, while still miserable, could at the very least come into work and sit behind the counter and work out a bit of a schedule for Apu to cover her while she checked out the monthly markets. That nifty gum-soothing ointment thing was her best friend in the world right now.

Today's Squishy flavors: Grape Judas, Florine, Bubble Gum

Who, if she doesn't exactly talk back much, is not doing it because she hates you.

Probably.

It was Saturday, and there was a Marco. "Yo!"

Turtle met the greeting with a little groan, but she still lifted a hand to wave. "Hi," she muttered, still a little cloggy from the aching tooth.

"You don't sound good." Marco informed her. "Not happy with the election outcome?"

Turtle gave Marco an odd look. A look usually reserved for people who had sprouted a second head or Jeff.

"I go' in," she reminded him. "Why would I be unhappy wif' 'at?"

Marco once sprouted a second head. He wasn't human at the time though. Don't ask. "Because you just mis-said with."

"I mis-'aid a 'ot of t'ings," Turtle pointed out, trying to annunciate all of that to no avail. She gestured toward the right side of her face. "My 'ums are numb 'cause of my 'oothache."

"Aw." Marco came over and jumped to sit on the counter. "Tylenol?"

"I oosed some of that gum numb stuff," Turtle said. "'orks 'unders! 'Uch better 'an bour'on."

"I have no clue what you just said." Marco perkily informed her.

Turtle sighed and fed some blank receipt paper through the cash register so she could jot it down.

"I said," she wrote, "that I used some of that gum numb stuff. It works even better than bourbon."

Marco read the note and blinked at her. "Bourbon? Seriously?"

Turtle's head bobbed in a nod, and she wrote another response.

"That's why my dad always gave me. A little bourbon on a cotton ball, put right up to a toothache, makes it feel better. I guess Dad's never heard of the gum numb stuff."

Marco blinked at that. "You're from now, right?"

Turtle's head bobbed in a nod.

A unicorn head appeared around the door, peering curiously around the store, followed by the entire unicorn. Jan snorted and shook his head, making his forelock fall over his face. "Turtle?"

"'An!" Turtle, despite having half a face practically numb, beamed as well as she could to see the unicorn come in. "Ah've 'een 'eaning to 'alk 'o you!"

Jan stared at her, then hurried over, the limp barely noticeable now, to try and snuffle her. "Are you hale? You sound strange."

Noticing the rush, Turtle waved a dismissive hand in the air for Jan, and then pointed distinctly to the right side of her mouth. "I 'ave a 'oothache," she explained. "Uh medi'ine numbs my mouse 'o I don't feel pain."

His ears twitched back and forth in worry and he picked his way over to her. "Have you seen the healer?" he asked. "She's very skilled."

Again, Turtle waved her hand. "'Appen all the time," she assured Jan. "Usn't madder. I 'ave 'ood news for 'oo."

His ears curved forward. "You do?" he asked eagerly.

Turtle's arms went out in front of her, held open in a welcoming gesture toward Jan. "'Ur now an' 'fficial mem'er of the 'Ur'le & Can'ry Team!" she declared triumphantly.

And paused.

"Pending, o' course, 'ur acceb'ance."

Jan took a moment to puzzle out what she'd said, and then he whickered happily, prancing the smallest amount with his front feet. "I accept! What do I need to do? What do I need to learn?"

"Tuesdays," Turtle said, taking especially care to pronounce that one after her grin at how adorable that little prancing was, "are 'ur days. This 'oming 'uesday, I'll open the store an' 'oo can come in, an' I'll train 'oo. 'Ound good?"

"It sounds perfect," he said, bobbing his head. "Thank you, Turtle. I promise I will do my very best, and defend the store until my last breath."

Despite any numb gums, Turtle just beamed. "Just got 'arted," she gushed, "an' already a 'oyal employee!"

He snorted, pleased, and nudged her hand with his nose affectionately. "I could be nothing less."

There would probably never be a time when one of Jan's nudges didn't leave Turtle giggling, reaching up with both her hands to rub his muzzle. As usual, she wanted to nuzzle a little back, but, for the pain in her jaw, she thought against it this time as well. "'Ool be a won'erful employee, Jan."

I'm off to work, but back later in the afternoon!
