Not, just because Kaylee was looking forward to the dance to a somewhat manic degree did not mean that she was going to shirk her responsibilities.

Which was why she'd turned up at work to put the finishing touches on Mr. Stark's phone, bringing along her own little comm to demonstrate if anyone asked her to.

And okay maybe she was also mentally trying to think of something to do with her hair that wouldn't look bad.

Ben popped his head into the store, arms full of schematics and a random stuffed frog.

"Hi!" he babbled. "I know today's busy, but I wanted to drop these off for you."

Beat.

"Not the frog."

"Aww, no froggie for me?" she asked, grinning. "I feel right neglected, now."

Ben blushed. "I'm sorry!" he flailed. "My dad gave it to me! Or someone who'll be my dad in twenty years. It's confusing. I can go get you one, though!"

"I was teasin' you," she assured him. "Don't fret!"

More blushing. "I knew that."

No he hadn't.

"Sure y'did," she said reassuringly.

"Anyway," Ben said, dropping schematics down in front of her, "here's what I could find on putting together an R-2 unit."

"Eeee!" she squealed. "Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Thank you so much, Ben!"

More blushing. "It wasn't that hard," he said, shuffling his feet.

"But still!" she said, beaming.

He grinned over at her. "There's lots of little parts," he said. "It should be fun to put together."

He reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out a small holorecorder, then pressed a button. "And here's what the Falcon looks like," he added.

Kaylee sucked in a breath, her eyes wide. "Oh, shiny! It's fast like that?"

"Very, very," Ben nodded. "Uncle Han's modified the engines well past what they should be able to do--something like 110 percent of spec."

"Wow," she breathed admiringly. "Yeah, I see how you can do that."

"He's done it with shields and weapons, too," Ben said. "Jaina knows more about how than I do."

"I dunno how to equip that stuff," she said in awe.

"I've learned some by watching, but Uncle Han doesn't let just anyone mess with the Falcon," he said. He turned his attention back to his holorecorder. "This", he said, eyes shining with pride, "is my mother's ship, the Jade Shadow."

"Oooooh, I like her," she said, grinning. "Very streamlined-like."

Ben grinned back. "She's fast, too. But not shiny."

"Is too shiny," she argued lightly.

"No, it's matte," Ben said. "That's why she's called the Shadow."

"Shiny means like, 'cool,'" Kaylee explained.

"Oh! I like that," Ben said, smiling. "So yes, Mom's matte ship is shiny."

"Yes!" she said, grinning and nodding. "'Xactly."

"You going to the dance tonight?" he asked. "I've heard that it should be...shiny?...too."

She nodded. "M'boyfriend an' I're going," she said happily. "I got a big dress!"

"Then I'll be able to pick you out," Ben said just as happily. "I'm going with a friend from home. Kind of. She's older at home."

He frowned. "Time lines get confusing."

She nodded. "Yeah, I know what that's like."

"Are people here from your past or future, too?" Ben asked, excited. He'd thought he was the only one.

"I won't be born for like five hundred years," she admitted.

"That's shiny!"

Ben was going to just beat this new slang to death. "In this same universe, then?"

She nodded. "It's reeeeal different in the future."

"Sounds like it," Ben said. "Is it really hard not to roll your eyes at what the people here think is advanced tech?"

"I already got in trouble with that," she admitted.

He giggled. "Really?"

"Blair glared somethin' fierce," she said, nodding.

"I don't think I've met her yet," Ben said.

"She's awesome," she said happily.

"I'll have to be on the lookout, then," Ben said. "I should probably let you get back to work and stuff, huh?"

She smiled. "I gotta finish this thingie for Mr. Stark, is all."

"Anything good?" he asked.

"Modified phone," she said, holding it up.

"Does it do three-dimensional video and stuff?"

She shook her head. "Not three-dimensional, but it does intergalactic comm."

"That's pretty impressive, too," Ben said, nodding.
