The Park, Saturday Evening

The ceremony had been beautiful. And the evening was only getting started. The guests were ushered into the large tent that had been erected (hee) in the park earlier in the day. The caterers had delivered and set up food and enough free alcohol to drink the entire town into a coma.

Of course, there was a special area reserved for the squirrels with dessert nuts and high-quality rum to keep Vala and Barney's smallest guests happy while they took their notes and danced the night away.

Pleased workers did a last check of the tables and cigar centerpieces before the guests and the wedding party arrived. The wedding reception was set to go exactly as planned.

Miss Bennet gave Tony her very frostiest Look.

"I don't believe we've been introduced," she said. As sweetly as possible.

Oh, a society lady. "No, I don't believe we have," He muttered, giving her a look right back. "Tony Stark. A friend of your landlord if I'm not mistaken."

"Miss Elizabeth Bennet," she said, bowing her head slightly. "Do you mean Mr. Durden? I have, indeed, rented his basement suite. He's very kind."

"Yes. Yes he is." Tony offered her a hand. He had that much trained into him by Pepper and his mother.

Miss Bennet took his hand, but not as a handshake -- rather as though she expected to be helped into a carriage or to have it kissed. She bobbed slightly. "How is it that you know Mr. Durden?" she asked. "Or the bride and groom, if I might inquire."

He could do a kiss on the hand, easily. "I believe I met him at Caritas and wouldn't leave him alone until I had someone to socialize with," Tony said. Then looked around as if he was going to share a huge secret. "And I don't. I got an invitation, though. So here I am.

She smiled back, amused despite herself. "I have been in Caritas once," she admitted. "On Tuesday. A woman I'd never met before asked if I could be a witness to her holy matrimony, and I agreed. You can see where that has lead me."

"Into a stunning dress and having a drink with a friend of your landlord?" Tony asked. "Scandalous."

There was a spot of color on her cheeks. "I thank you for the compliment, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm half-dressed," she insisted. "I agreed to the dress before I knew how little material it should involve."

"Then I should warn you that overindulging in the champagne won't help with that," Tony informed her. "And you're pretty conservative from what I've seen."

"I'm afraid you're right," she frowned, setting her glass down again. "I've still to adjust to all of these ... differing ideas of propriety, it seems. I'm a bit out of my element."

"You mean no one has tried to get you up to date on everything?" Tony asked.

Eliza flushed, shaking her head. "I've heard a great deal, and seen more. I've come to the point where I can accept one of my students or colleagues wandering around half-dressed, and understand that it isn't improper. Wearing this myself is a bit more of a ... difficulty. I don't feel like a proper lady at this moment."

Tony smirked and shook his head, grabbing himself a glass of the champagne. "There's something to be said about a woman who covers more than she shows."

That earned him a very dark sort of look. "Yes," she said. "There is usually a great deal to be said of such women, and little complimentary."

Tony clucked his tongue disapprovingly. "You know, you just aren't very playful. And can't seem to take a compliment."

"Really?" Eliza set her chin. "I'm very playful. It's one of those things for which I am most frequently chastised. I appreciate the compliment, though not the spirit in which it was offered, perhaps."

"So how should I say I appreciate your good looks? Flowers? Cards? Dinner?"

Eliza smiled. It was nearly brittle. "I most certainly appreciate the offer, but it's unnecessary. I shall take your compliment at its face, and we may leave it there."

He did like a challenge...

"Did I cross a line, Miss Bennet?"

"No, indeed," she said, and she did seem amused, at that. "Although, if one might be direct, I should say that you seem the sort of gentleman who would, if given the opportunity."

"That would be because I am," Tony replied. "But not with someone like you, I think. You're not the kind to fall for me, are you?"

"I should like to think I have more sense than that," Eliza smiled.

"Which only makes me want to try harder," He admitted.

"Do you enjoy impossible tasks?" Eliza laughed. "Pray, do not allow me to deny any such pleasure you might receive from that. Amuse yourself however you like."
