MCA Lobby - Monday Afternoon

Rusty was bored. He needed to get out more.

At the moment, he was sitting at the front desk and writing out some ideas for the party he and Mary had discussed on their date last week.

Mike was headed back to his apartment after wrapping up some stuff in his office. But first, he needed to have a word with his landlord.

"Dude, there is hot cocoa coming from all the taps in my apartment!"

"Uh... do you want me to call a repairman?" Rusty asked. That was a first for him.

"Only if it keeps up for a couple of days," said Mike. "It may just be a Fandom thing, but if it lasts longer than three days, I will go ballistic without my coffee."

Rusty nodded. "Fair enough. I've got a pot of coffee on in my place."

Yes, he used bottled water. What of it?

"I suppose it could be worse, though," said Mike. "There was that time all the coffee on the island turned into decaf and stayed that way for days."

"That's just sacrereligious!"

Rusty stared in horror for a moment. "You want a cup of coffee?"

"It happened right around final exams too. Worst possible timing," groaned Mike.

He perked up, though. "You have coffee? I really could use a cup, if you don't mind."

"Yeah, I always use bottled water," Rusty said. "You take milk or sugar?"

"Neither. I'm a coffee purist. I just drink it straight up with nothing added," said Mike. "I should have learned my lesson by now and kept bottled water on hand. You never know what's going to happen around this place."

"I'll be right back," Rusty said.

He disappeared into his apartment and poured a large mug with coffee. "Here you go, man. I'm Rusty Ryan, by the way. I don't think we've met."

"Thanks, man. Oh, and I'm Mike Cannon from apartment #3. It's good to meet you," said Mike, taking the mug.

"I'm thinking about throwing a holiday gathering for the people in the building," Rusty said.

"Now that would be awesome," said Mike. "It's been too long since anyone around here threw a party."

"That's what Mary told me," Rusty said.

"That's right. I heard you went on a date with my friend Mary," said Mike with a smirk. "How'd it go?"

"I think it went well," Rusty said. "But you'd have to ask her what she thought."

Not that Rusty would ask Mike if Mary said anything to him. Because Rusty was not twelve.

"Oh, I'll have to remember to ask her," said Mike. "I've been kind of worried about her since the wedding was called off and everything, but she seems to be back on her feet."

"What wedding?" Rusty asked.

Whoops.

"Uh, she didn't tell you?" asked Mike.

Rusty shook his head. "No, guess not."

Mike squirmed a little bit. It wasn't his place to spread gossip about his friend. Then again, most of the town already knew the story and someone was bound to repeat it to Rusty.

"Okay, you did not hear this from me, but Mary was supposed to get married over the summer. Except the first attempted wedding fell apart, and then they were going to try to elope, but that fell apart too. Then her fiancé left town for good," explained Mike.

"Huh."

Rusty could kind of understand why Mary hadn't mentioned that.

"It's nice to see her getting back into the swing of things, though. I mean, it's not like this hasn't happened before," added Mike without thinking.

"She had another broken engagement?" Rusty asked.

Mike groaned. "I shouldn't have said anything, but yeah, she almost married her high school sweetheart. Obviously, it didn't happen, and he's happily settled with his baby momma these days. I think Mary came to Fandom just to get away from having to watch them."

"So as long as I don't propose to her, things should be okay."

Mike chuckled. "Probably. You might also want to stay away from freak fishing boat accidents and one Samantha James Marquez to stay on the safe side," he said.

Rusty smiled. "I'll keep that in mind."

"Good. Let me know when you're having that party and thanks for the coffee," said Mike, handing back the empty coffee mug.

"Anytime," Rusty said. "And I'll hang up some flyers or something."
