The cold and toothache double combo was almost entirely vanquished, but that didn't prevent Turtle from having a rather thematic sale today.

Thankfully, it seemed that she had gotten to the store before the mistletoe had. But she couldn't help but notice that Apu was sweeping by the door an awful lot today, which was just weird.

Who is eying the fact that the mistletoe seemed to have spread to all the doorways in the store and is eying them very closely.

Sarah was going to stride briskly through the door and pretend she didn't see either the mistletoe or the Indian man who eyed her hungrily as he swept. Anyhow, she had something else on her mind.

As she gathered information on Fandom High, it quickly became clear to her that Turtle Wexler was a star, between her deep involvement in student activities and owning the general store. And when Sarah ran a background check ... well. The youngest person to win a case in a court of law was hard to ignore. (And if her father was some kind of bookie, that was more a hook than a deterrent.)

The potential, then, was definitely there; her next job was to gauge interest.

Which was why Sarah was in the store and perfectly innocently approaching the counter. "Excuse me, do you sell binoculars?

"Binoculars?" Turtle asked, and then sported a 50 ton wattage grin. "Do we ever! We've got almost everything here at Turtle & Canary, Miss Walker! What sort of binoculars are you looking for? Standard? Those fancy-schmancy ones that people bring to the opera, you know, on sticks and stuff? Super cool ones with heat sensory vision and targeting? We don't have any that let you see through lady's clothing, though."

Jeff had tried.

"There go my plans for tonight, then," Sarah said, pretty clearly joking. "Standard should be fine. I was just thinking about getting into birdwatching."

A calculated beat. "Do a lot of people buy the ones with all the bells and whistles?"

"Every one in a while," Turtle said with a nod, withdrawing an elaboration over the fact that most of them bought the high tech ones because she'd talked them into it. Because that would really make it harder to talk Miss Walker into it. "I mean, they really are nice. You should have a look at them; so sharp, and they fit your hands so nicely! You won't miss a single bird with those things!"

"I do have a budget," Sarah said, feigning skepticism. In truth, she was curious how high-tech the store's gear was. It might be nice to know ... well. Later. "But no point starting with bad tools, right? You may as well show me what you would recommend."

"Oh, don't worry, Miss Walker," Turtle assured her, hopping out from behind the counter so that she could lead her customer down one of the aisles to her area of interest. "Everything at Turtle & Canary is very affordable, on almost any budget! You can be sure to get a great deal with me."

Sarah was amused at the natural salesmanship on display. "Then lead on," she said. "Show me your top model and we can work down from there."

"I like how you work, Miss Walker," Turtle gave her a smile. "And, remember, any price is negotiable. I just want to make sure you get a great product for your purposes at a great price. Now, this beauty here (http://www.binoculars.com/binoculars/general-use-binoculars/16x32nikonstabileyesvr.cfm) is actually hailed as one of the greatest scouting tools anyone could own. How can you beat a claim like that? Of course, the greatest does come with a bit of a high price tag, but...well, what did you say your budget was, Miss Walker? Oh, and look how light it is!"

"I didn't say," Sarah said, dutifully hefting the Nikon. It was a nice model, comparable to CIA issue a few years back. "I was thinking around $200 or so, but I haven't really priced binoculars, so that might be off."

She looked through the binoculars. "Niiiiiice," she said, sincerely. "Do you sell a lot of this model?"

"Not really," Turtle admitted with a rueful smile. "Not many people around here have eight hundred bucks to throw around on binoculars."

Not many. Turtle could fairly easily list of a good handful of people on this island who did, and, of course, she knew enough to give or take a few hidden millionaires.

"Even if they did, I'd imagine they'd be more likely to go to Mister Stark and try to get them with laser beams and seeing through ladies' clothes features and other such extravagances. Of course, if you're just using it for bird watching, that'd be a definite waste of expenses, I'd think."

"I think I can do with a pair without laser beams," Sarah agreed, as she added another visit to Tony Stark to her mental to-do list. She needed to find out what he was doing in that shop, and ... well, it wouldn't exactly be a chore, whatever reputation he had.

"Show me something a little more middle-of-the-line, please."

"Middle of the line," Turtle nodded, putting the first pair back. "Got it. Let's see...Oh! Here's (http://www.binoculars.com/binoculars/marine-binoculars/atn7x50comegamilitarybinocularwilluminatedcompass.cfm) a nice model! Military, seven times magnification! Real sturdy. A little above your budget, but I can knock off a bit and get it to you about two-fifteen."

"These look like they should come with a khaki uniform," Sarah noted, but held them up to her eyes.

They were very nice, for civilian gear. She'd take them as back-up to complement the sets she already had. "Oh, wow, they're really good. When I'm done birdwatching I could spy on all my neighbors with them."

A joke, but it would be interesting to see how Turtle reacted.

"Those birds won't even see you seeing them!" Turtle remarked, excitedly with the beginning bounces of a good sale.

Or apparently Miss Walker's neighbors, but what Miss Walker did in her spare time with her binoculars was none of Turtle's business. Turtle's business was just the sale.

"That's the goal," Sarah said. "I'll take these, please."

She had to grin at the bounce. "You're a natural saleswoman, aren't you?"

"Oh, well," Turtle beamed, lifting her shoulders with a humbling attempt at modesty, "I've been at it for a bit. I just like seeing good people go home with good deals, Miss Walker."

Sarah resisted her urge to pat the girl's head at being considered a good person. "And I like a good deal," she said instead, as she started to walk to the register. "But that's right -- this is your shop, isn't it? Mind if I ask how that happened?"

"Oh, man!" Turtle said, but she didn't seem at all bothered by relating the story. "Ages ago! The place used to be run by one Jane Canary, great woman, I still really miss her. I was just an employee then and we had this awful cash regester, you have no idea. It gave me nightmares. So, I wrote up a nice little proposal on how we could easily manage to swing by some funds to buy a new, updated one, one that would even do a lot of internal computer work for us, and I presented it to Jane, and she made me a partner in the business! That's where the name comes from. Turtle," she pointed to herself, "and Canary. She left, to go on different adventures, leaving the store to me for a while. G'Kar picked up her shares of the company, not too long ago, and so now it's jointly owned by the both of us, but we kept the name. It just has staying power."

"Oh, wow, that is a great story. And it's a fantastic name," Sarah said approvingly, after the appropriate amount of nodding along with the story. "Easy to remember, snappy but not too cute. I bet you're going to miss this place after you graduate."

"Not really," Turtle admitted, shrugging slightly. "I mean, sure, a little bit, but any successful person's got to remember one thing: you've got to keep moving. Spend too much time on one venue, and you end up getting stuck in a rut. I actually don't want to make a career in retail, anyway. I'm going to be a lawyer."

The CIA hired plenty of lawyers, and Sarah liked the rest of that answer. "Oh, nice. Any particular kind of law?"

"Business law," Turtle answered without even a beat, nodding firmly, and then she flashed Miss Walker a grin. "I'm good at that."

"I am not surprised by that," Sarah said as she prepared to pay. "Thanks for the binoculars, Turtle. I'm sure I'll be in here again."

For ... more than one reason.

"Oh, I hope so!" Turtle beamed as she finished up Miss Walker's sale. "Otherwise, you'll be going somewhere else, and that means you'll most likely be spending too much money!"

"I'll remember that," Sarah promised with a light giggle, gathering up her bag. "Bye."

"Have a good day, Miss Walker!"

Today is a weird day. I might be very on-and-off.
