Chilly Boulder, Late Saturday Afternoon/Early Evening

Dōjima had promised Cal ice cream for his birthday, and she had meant it.

Admittedly, he probably wasn't expecting the store to be filled with balloons, streamers, and people, but Dōjima tended to be a bit of a dork about things like this, especially when it came to her friends.

Besides, he had said it was okay if she brought a small army, so inviting the entire student body was perfectly acceptable, right? Right.

"But if I'm the King, I can decide what's proper!"

"Telling people how they ought to behave... I think you're already getting the hang of it."

Dinah cracked up, and grinned widely. "Woo! Natural gravitas, or whatever it is!" She sobered a little, and said, "It's at the end of the semester, and you have to come see. I don't want people throwing tomatoes at me. You have to steal them from people in the audience if they want to throw them!"

"And miss my chance to see someone else pelted with rotten food?"

"The King commands it!" Dinah snickered. "Ohhh, god. If I suck, I'll have to hide for the entire summer."

"You'll do great," Merlin insisted, putting an arm around her shoulder.

Dinah leaned against him a little, feeling better already. "Thanks. I hope so." She sighed, then grinned at him, nudging him with one elbow. "So what else have you been up to this week?"

"Class, chores, making sure to never find whomever left me that one message..."

"You probably never will, if you keep working so hard at avoiding it," Dinah teased. "Although, trying to find them might yield some weird and interesting results."

"Should I ask after your love life now?" Merlin asked, not letting her get to him. Really. Ignore how his ears went red.

Oh, sure. And he could ignore the bright pink on Dinah's cheeks too.

"What love life?" Dinah snorted, working very very hard at not looking over at any particular shirtless guy in the room. Or the birthday guy, because she was just friends and her own swooniness didn't change that. "I'm going out for friendly coffee with Priestly? But I don't think that counts?"

"Should I look after you like a proper friend and make sure he doesn't try anything unbecoming of a lady of you standing." There was a pause before he added. "Or should I say lord now?"

"Noooooo!" Dinah shook her head hard, then snickered. "To either! He wouldn't! And I could totally take Priestly in a fight anyway. I think," she added, frowning. "So no! No doing that!"

"I could take him," Merlin insisted. No, he hadn't even met Priestly, but he still thought he could.

"Merlin, how many fights have you been in? Seriously."

"More than you'd think!"

And was beaten soundly thanks to no magic being used. Of course.

Dinah leaned against him, and squeezed his arm. "If I need back-up, I'm totally calling you. The ones who'd definitely have your back are the ones you yell for."

"I can also defeat the fearsome cookie if you find yourself in need."

Dinah cracked up. "You know, Alfred's been threatening to inflict some on me. I may have to use your dread telephone box to tell you I need saaaaaving."

"It's the message box that's evil!"

"I'll save you from the box if you save me from the cookies!"

Merlin nodded. "A deal, my lord."

Dinah whapped his arm for that, and pointed at the ice cream cone. "Eat, Merlin!"
