Chilly Boulder, Late Saturday Afternoon/Early Evening

Dōjima had promised Cal ice cream for his birthday, and she had meant it.

Admittedly, he probably wasn't expecting the store to be filled with balloons, streamers, and people, but Dōjima tended to be a bit of a dork about things like this, especially when it came to her friends.

Besides, he had said it was okay if she brought a small army, so inviting the entire student body was perfectly acceptable, right? Right.

"To you, maybe!" Cal said with a laugh. "She didn't trick you into a birthday party!"

Neither did she really trick Cal, if he'd bothered to think about it.

"Well," Cal said loftily, "maybe a few...dozen...bowls wouldn't hurt too much."

"It is your day. You get to dictate the terms," Dinah said, giggling. "Being snooty and well-fed is entirely within your rights."

"That's right," Cal agreed, nodding, but then he let the countenance fall into an easy grin. "Thanks for coming. I didn't know you and Dōjima were friends."

"We're not, although I think I'd like to be, after this party and hearing about her from people," Dinah said with a smile. "She invited oh, everyone at school who knows you. E-mailed us all."

There was a long, long pause, which Cal filled by staring at Dinah and waiting for the moment where she laughed and said she was kidding.

Which didn't come.

"...you're kidding, right?" he tried. Maybe she needed prompting.

Dinah needing prompting to say something. Yeah right.

Cal sighed, a palm resting on his face. "I can't believe she emailed the whole school."

Dinah grinned and took a lick of her ice-cream. "She wanted you to have a good party. And now everybody knows who you are and is grateful to you for a birthday!"

"That's actually not a bad point," Cal admitted. "Because people will associate me with ice cream, and that's never a bad thing."
