Dōjima had promised Cal ice cream for his birthday, and she had meant it.

Admittedly, he probably wasn't expecting the store to be filled with balloons, streamers, and people, but Dōjima tended to be a bit of a dork about things like this, especially when it came to her friends.

Besides, he had said it was okay if she brought a small army, so inviting the entire student body was perfectly acceptable, right? Right.

"Amy," Claire said with a grin. "Happy Cal's birthday."

The name just made her grin more. "Happy Cal's birthday! How've you been in the ages and ages since Wednesday?"

"Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, developing a heroin addiction, recovering, relapsing, recovering again," Claire claimed. "The usual. You?"

"You've been busy," she laughed. "And, uh, me too I guess. Went home for a few days, wore a wig in History, terribly thrilling really."

"Mmmm, how was home?" Claire wanted to know.

"People who dump rocks on you in a canyon are jerks," Ino said solemnly. "And home was nice, what I got to see of it. Dad was out of town, so I didn't get to see him though, which kinda sucks."

"Yeah, I would just say no to people dumping rocks on me," Claire answered. "Sucks that you missed your dad, though."

"Left him a letter," Ino said. "So he'll write, but yeah. He's pretty busy, so it's not really surprising, but still..."

She shrugged slightly. "Better luck next time?"

"Better luck next time," Claire agreed. "I haven't been home since Christmas. I should probably call my mom and all of that."

"Oooh, yeah, don't let them think you're avoiding them," she noted. "Or else chances are, if they're anything like my dad they'll be showing up on the island to find out why."

"It was bad enough when my brother showed up," Claire commented. "My mom has to come for graduation. I know her head will just go k'pow."

"She doesn't know 'bout Fandom being werid?"

Claire snorted by way of an answer "No. She's really traditional. I do not want to think about the epic panic attack she'd have if I told ehr our washers and dryers revolted."

Ino winced. "Yeah, in that case, you totally want to make sure she's not got reason to come here before grad it sounds like."
