Dōjima had promised Cal ice cream for his birthday, and she had meant it.

Admittedly, he probably wasn't expecting the store to be filled with balloons, streamers, and people, but Dōjima tended to be a bit of a dork about things like this, especially when it came to her friends.

Besides, he had said it was okay if she brought a small army, so inviting the entire student body was perfectly acceptable, right? Right.

Liir noticed the hesitance before giving Merlin a small, slightly sad smile.

"I'm glad."

And then, deliberately, turned his head to glance around the room. An easy out for Merlin.

He'd wanted to help, recognizing the awkwardness from his own misunderstandings of various pieces of the world of the island, but he didn't want him in trouble.
