Fast Eddie's [late afternoon]

Ben stared down at the pair of ugly, ugly, ugly bowling shoes in his hand with a frown. "I don't know why my own shoes aren't good enough," he complained to Tahiri. "They're black! And shiny!"

He frowned a little harder. "And, you know, match each other."

"Easier to remember," Ben agreed with a smile as he typed in his own name. "You get to go first, though."

"Who says?" Tahiri demanded, but she managed to pry herself away and stepped up onto the lane. "Whoa. These stupid shoes are slippery!"

"Reverse alphabetical," Ben made up before looking a little worried. "Don't fall over!"

[weetuskenraider]

"I'm not --" wobble -- "going to fall," Tahiri insisted. "And when did you have time to read up on all the game rules?"

[momslilassassin]

"I don't sleep much," Ben said. "If I have to use the Force to stop you from toppling, you know I'm gonna tease you about it forever, right?"

Tahiri got the wobbling under control and narrowed her eyes playfully at him. "Keep hoping, but don't hold your breath. You'd have the right to tease me forever if it happened, but it's not going to."

Now, about that bowling ball. There was a momentary hitch when she went to pick it up, but with a little Force assistance Tahiri was on her way toward the line with the ball and absolutely no technique whatsoever. With a very loud crash the ball hit the lane and rolled very, very slowly toward the pins.

Ben watched the ball roll, eyebrows going up. "I'm going to be eighteen by the time it hits anything," he teased.

"That'll make me ancient." She stuck her tongue out at him and gave the ball a Force nudge. Hard.

"I was going to be too much of a gentleman to mention that," Ben said smugly. "And that is a much better way to play."

[weetuskenraider]

"It's practice," Tahiri decided, and adjusted the ball's course so it didn't end up in the gutter. Who needed bumper bowling, anyway?

[momslilassassin]

"I kind of love the way you think," Ben said with a grin, then reached out with the Force to see if she'd let him nudge it towards the gutter again.

[weetuskenraider]

She would, but not without nudging it just a little way back away from the gutter again. "Well, it could be useful someday!"

Another nudge the other direction. "Just like all those rocks Dad likes having us lift!"

Tahiri nudged the ball back, hard enough to put a weird spin on it . . . and send it hurtling toward the other gutter.

"It's the missing stage," she said, deadpan. "You start with leaves, and the bowling balls fall in there somewhere between the rocks and the small spacecraft."

Ben laughed. "He'll be so glad to have something else for the Rontos to toss around."

[weetuskenraider]

". . . Rontos?" Tahiri watched the ball roll down the gutter with a sigh. Nobody'd notice if one or two of the pins just happened to fall down anyway, right? It was just a draft from the passing ball. Really.

[momslilassassin]

"Oh, that's right," Ben said with a slightly guilty smile. "He hasn't reorganized the younglings into random animal groups yet, has he?"

If he noticed the pins knocking over completely on their own, he wasn't going to say anything.

"Not yet," Tahiri said, and walked back to sit down by the scoring table. "That's weirdly cute. But mostly weird."

[momslilassassin]

"'Mostly weird' definitely describes every version of my dad," Ben said, reaching out with the Force to roll his ball down the center of the lane.

Lazy little Jedi.

"Not a bad weird," Tahiri felt the need to add, "but yeah, that's pretty accurate."

And now it was her turn to try and nudge his ball off course. Not dirty. So not dirty.

Ben grinned at her and put a little more effort into keeping his ball straight snerk. "It's amazing how I turned out so normal," he said.

Opting for a different tactic, Tahiri tried to put a weird backspin on the ball instead. "You're kind of amazing in general."

And there went all of Ben's concentration. The ball careened into the gutter. "Really?" he said, turning red.

Well, that hadn't been an intentional tactic, but she might have to remember it for future reference. Still, she lifted the ball out of the gutter and nudged it back down the center of the lane for him. "Yeah, really, and someday you're going to believe me when I say it," Tahiri said.

He blushed more. "Well, you know," he mumbled, "I kind of have a lot to live up to."

He noticed the ball rolling. "You didn't have to do that."
