Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Evening

"Well, most of you are looking refreshingly back to your original shapes," Ghanima said crisply. "I hope many of you enjoyed your second or third childhoods, and many congratulations on not managing to kill each other with the nerf toys last week."

"Being back to normal means no ball pit this week," Tyler added. "I know. I'm crushed, too. Welcome to Fight Club. Rules are posted over there, and if this is your first week sign in and let us know what your level is."

"Like last time, we'll both be around keeping an eye on things, and I'll be over by the beginner mats for the first bit," Ghanima stated. "Now, you and you. You two. And you two too." She turned to Tyler, smiling brightly. "Care to pick the last victims?"

"You know the way to my heart, Ghanima," Tyler joshed, and looked over the group for a long moment. "You, hiding in the back, and you by the padding. And both of you. And that makes five sets. Go forth and punch."

He knew how to throw a punch, really. But it never hurt to be better at throwing a punch. So... here's Jack. Trying not to feel too awkward about learning from that Crazy Royalties professor.

"Relax," Ghanima stated crisply, eyes sharp as she looked him over. Training the younglings meant she was letting Jessica ride shotgun at the forefront of her Other Memory, and some of her grandmother's sharp edges were bleeding through into Ghanima's actions. "If you're tense, you've already lost."

Jack shook his shoulders a bit. "Okay. I'm relaxed." He was. Slightly.

Liir decided that a bit of training would never be the wrong way to go and thus made his way over.

Ghanima smiled and nodded at him, face softening slightly as Jessica retreated half-a-step into the tau to allow her to deal with her student.

"Liir," she said pleasantly. "Where would you like to start?"

"Probably best to start from the beginning," he said with a faint smile. He liked Professor Atreides.

"The beginning," she agreed with a laugh.

"The first thing to remember is to keep breathing," Ghanima said, reaching out to lay a hand on his chest. "If you start holding it all in, you'll pass out from lack of oxygen. Let yourself breath naturally, and focus on your center of balance. If you know where you've got your weight and how you're holding it, it will be harder for them to take you off your feet."

"I'm familiar with stances," he told her, more to let her know than to try to say he didn't need what she was telling him. He only hoped his tone conveyed that.

"And I'll try and keep it in mind, to keep breathing."

"Good, then you'll have an easier time with the rest of it," Ghanima replied. "When you hit someone, what do you do? Can you show me?"

She didn't get the impression that Liir hit people very often, but she wasn't going to assume it had never happened.

"I was shown to do it like so," he said, moving almost like a video in slow motion as he showed her a punch powered mostly by the turn of a hip.

"Leadcotton always said to power them with your legs, which didn't make sense at the time but I think I've figured out some of that recently. Though of course, that could be wrong. But that's who taught me."

"Good," Ghanima replied, watching him critically. "You've got the basic of the hit down, it seems, so that will just require practice."

"We'll start with the elbow strike, then. An opponant will often expect a punch, so this gives you some freedom for unconventional situations," she said, falling into a stance beside him.

"The elbow and forearm make for great weapons. The key is to twist at the waist and throw all the weight and power of both your upper and lower body into the hit." Ghanima demonstrated it slowly for him, then sped it up. "When used correctly, the elbow can cause a lot of pain in the ribs, sternum, diaphragm, throat, groin... high damage on them, and low-impact for you."

He nodded before repeating what she'd done, first slow and then quicker. He needed to learn things in pieces before they really worked for him.

"Understood," he told her with a nod.

Yeah, Turtle needed all the help she could get. She was biting her lip a little nervously as she drifted over to the mats for a little help, realized she was doing it, and promptly stopped.

Nervousness was easy enough to spot, and Ghanima made her way towards the younger girl.

"Where would you like to start?" she asked. "Or, you can tell me what you know, and we can work from there."

"I know kicking," Turtle said with a nod, reminding herself that knowing your limitations was the first step to conquering them, "especially shin-kicking. And that's about it."

"Shin-kicking is a deeply underestimated method of attack," Ghanima replied, settling into a defensive stance. "You would not believe how many times I have won with that tactic."

Well, some people called it cheating, but Ghanima viewed it as using her options.

"Go ahead and try to kick me," she suggested. "I promise to dodge, but I want to see how you move first."

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle grinned a little at the response. "No fair," she commented lightly, settling into a mock-up of her own stance, which was really just copying hers. "That's my move. But okay."

And then she paused, waiting, as if to at least add some element of surprise to it before she darted in quickly, pulled back her leg, and went for the shin. It was the only move (other than circumnavigating in speech and deals) where she seemed to gain some grace, but Miss Atreides said she'd dodge, so she didn't bother holding back, because then it wasn't her fault if she actually did get her.

Ghanima waited until the last moment, watching Turtle's stance and follow-through before twisting to the side just a hair and sliding out of danger.

"Very good," she approved. "You have an excellent sense of balance, and that will be very useful. We can pair that kick of yours with a few different hits, and you'll have a good base to start from."

Re: Beginner Mats

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle, fists curled, followed the kick into the air with a slight stomp. Part of her expected Miss Atreides to dodge, true, but that didn't mean part of Turtle wasn't still hoping...

A missed kick was always a disappointment, no matter how much you expected it, and she let that moment happen before giving a firm nod. "That's what I'm hoping for. Kicking will only get you so far."

Oh, this one was a fighter! Ghanima hid her grin as she nodded.

"We'll give you a mean hook-punch, then," she responded. "Take a proper boxing stance: put both legs parallel to your shoulders, then bring your most dominant foot half a step back and slightly bend your knees. Both hands lined up a bit outside of your eyes and a few inches away from your face." Ghanima demonstrated, watching to see if Turtle would mimic her.

"Then you twist your body towards your dominant side, rotating your front foot as if you are squishing a bug. The spin will put more power behind the punch. Just be careful not to swing too far or too wildly, or you open yourself up to an attack to the face."

Re: Beginner Mats

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle was mimicking Miss Atreides with the utmost attention, riveted as she tried to copy ever precise detail, no matter how awkward or foolish or nervous she felt. Her lower lip caught between her teeth again as she followed. Twist your body toward dominant side, rotate front foot like squishing a buuuuuuuug (or Doug Hoo's faaaace!). She executed it slowly, clearly practicing the feel of it before putting more oomph into it.

"Like this?"

"Very like that," she agreed, nodding as she demonstrated again. "You've got a good advantage in your size and gender; not many people are going to expect a pretty young girl to slug them in the jaw."

Re: Beginner Mats

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle couldn't help snort a little as she tried it again, a little more involved this time. "So I've got an advantage because they're blind, too?" she asked, grinning. "But I like that. Ronan slugged me in the face two weeks ago; it'd be nice to know how I could have been the one to slug him first."
