Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Evening

"Well, most of you are looking refreshingly back to your original shapes," Ghanima said crisply. "I hope many of you enjoyed your second or third childhoods, and many congratulations on not managing to kill each other with the nerf toys last week."

"Being back to normal means no ball pit this week," Tyler added. "I know. I'm crushed, too. Welcome to Fight Club. Rules are posted over there, and if this is your first week sign in and let us know what your level is."

"Like last time, we'll both be around keeping an eye on things, and I'll be over by the beginner mats for the first bit," Ghanima stated. "Now, you and you. You two. And you two too." She turned to Tyler, smiling brightly. "Care to pick the last victims?"

"You know the way to my heart, Ghanima," Tyler joshed, and looked over the group for a long moment. "You, hiding in the back, and you by the padding. And both of you. And that makes five sets. Go forth and punch."

One of Manek's tricks. As such, she only managed to catch his shirt before he spun and stepped back, looking at her thoughtfully as he considered what she might do next.

"You," Dinah said, grinning a little, "are a frustrating person to fight, Liir." She slowly circled him again, wondering if he was ever going to try to hit her. "You can't win just playing defense, though."

Sidekick, very fast, aiming for his hip on the right, and ready to step forward into a punch on the other side, if that didn't connect. Fast.

He saw the kick coming, as well as where her foot was, the cocking of her arm. As such, he didn't waste the time or energy to answer, nor to dodge. He took the kick to the side with a short grunt before trying to pull her off balance with the 'stopped' leg. Despite his issues with hitting, the pull would be a firm yank if he managed it.

Fortunately Dinah was used to that; it was one of Helena's favorite tricks.

So Dinah just went with it, and taking page from Priestly's playbook, let her weight shift forward into what would be a body-slam unless Liir *really* got out of the way fast.

Ino's training made sure that he wasn't afraid to fall. Instead of trying to avoid the floor, he threw his weight to the side so he didn't land under her. Then he let go of her leg to try and roll away.

"Ha!" And a better outcome than the time she landed on Ronan, too. Dinah wasn't about to let him get away though, and she firmly reached to grab Liir's arm, and then move to pin down his shoulders. She was ready to climb on top of him if that didn't work, maybe? Unless he just wriggled away.

No, instead he went stock still, eyes blank.

It was a fake out, meant to make her pause and perhaps loosen her hold. If she hit him, that might work as well, as far as his plan was concerned.

Dinah didn't let go, or loosen her hold, but she did pause; safety was more important than winning. "Liir? You okay?"

Dammit. He couldn't justify being that much of a jerk as to worry her in a practice bout.

"I'm fine. Continue."

Relieved, Dinah grinned, but was still thrown off-kilter enough to try and remember what she'd been planning next. Oh! Right. "Okay, if you can get out of this hold, we keep going, if you can't, I win," she said, working hard to maintain her leverage.

He grinned just the once before using his hips to get his feet on the floor where he could use their strength to push up and twist his way out.

"Ack!" Dinah had almost had him, but mercy had kept her from climbing on top of him, after all, so it was her own fault he managed to get free.

She snapped her hand out to grab at his ankle though, and hopefully trip him back down to the mat.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-03-22 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
She caught him and he did trip, but he knew how to fall well (it had been his first and his most-practiced lesson). He was glad he wasn't thinking about it, but his other leg moved to kick her off his ankle.

Dinah let go of his foot before it could connect, scrambling to her feet to match him. Height and reach on her, and fast, and unwilling to engage directly, how to make this work... She paused, standing at the ready, forcing herself to wait again.

He'd tried to hit her.

That realization hit him like a shot as he came to his feet, his movements smooth and well-practiced. He'd actually tried to hit her. And without thinking of it either!

Apparently, it was more natural than he was giving himself credit for.

He stepped back, setting himself into a wide, steady stance and focused on her again. He might have had empty hands, but he was now armed. Armed with the knowledge that he could strike.

Dinah watched, and waited, and concentrated on her breathing. Wearing herself out chasing Liir wasn't going to do any more good than not being able to get him down.

She kept her stance open and ready. One one thousand. Two one thousand. Three one thousand....

He darted forward again, fast, as he did when practicing gooseball, and this time threw a tight punch at the shoulder joint.

Oh Nameless Name, let her be fast enough to stop me. And I hope she doesn't hate me.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Got him to move! Finally!

Dinah whipped her arm up to block the punch, shoving it upward with a grin and letting it slide down the outside of her arm, then powering her other arm forward in a punch to his sternum.

His stance let him turn easily enough, but her shove overextended him somewhat and so he didn't have as much of his weight to throw as he would have usually. The result had her knuckles running across his chest in line that very well might leave a mark.

He ignored it and used what power he did have, from the turn and from his stance, to throw his elbow at the side of her head.

Dinah saw it coming; not fast enough to duck out of the way, but fast enough to roll with it, and while he'd thrown a good punch, it wasn't as hard as Mr. Durden's by a large measure. So it wasn't that hard to back off, blink, shake off the pain, and return to ready, still grinning.

Much better!

And a one-two combination aimed for his stomach again, if he didn't back off too.

Re: Open Sparring.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
He backed off.

He was reeling, somewhat, just from...

He'd connected. He'd connected!

Oh goodness, he was going to be ill.

Later! He'd be ill later. Right now, he'd started a fight and he should give Dinah a fight. He'd be ill later.

He settled into his stance, steadied his breathing, and looked to Dinah to make sure she was all right.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah was fine; this was just playtime for her. The grin probably showed that, if not the quick punch aimed at his side, followed with a low kick to the side of his knee, hoping to catch him off-balance.

Re: Open Sparring.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
He was glad she was all right, but the grin. The grin brought up some of his bitterness, even though it was unbidden. He liked Dinah, very much, so he wasn't particularly pleased with himself that he hated that she was grinning. Like this was a game!

He expected it to make him worse, but it actually helped. He swerved around the punch and even as the kick was to land, lashed out with his own leg to try and kick her away.

Re: Open Sparring.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
For Dinah it was; after all, no powers, no imminent death, no one to protect other than herself. Simple. One two three punch and dodge and kick--

and in this case, whoops! Their legs got tangled up, more by luck than anything else, and Dinah lost her balance. Not wanting to land on him, but wanting to end this, she grimaced and grabbed for his arm, twisting as hard as she could and throwing her weight the other direction, hoping to execute the same throw that had worked on Priestly, even if it was a lot more sloppy.

He was thrown but, thanks to his training... rolled with it. When he stood, though--

"Good bout?" he asked, obviously a little, well, done. He'd played the part, he'd thrown a punch or two; now he just sort of wanted desperately to bake something.
