Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Evening

"Well, most of you are looking refreshingly back to your original shapes," Ghanima said crisply. "I hope many of you enjoyed your second or third childhoods, and many congratulations on not managing to kill each other with the nerf toys last week."

"Being back to normal means no ball pit this week," Tyler added. "I know. I'm crushed, too. Welcome to Fight Club. Rules are posted over there, and if this is your first week sign in and let us know what your level is."

"Like last time, we'll both be around keeping an eye on things, and I'll be over by the beginner mats for the first bit," Ghanima stated. "Now, you and you. You two. And you two too." She turned to Tyler, smiling brightly. "Care to pick the last victims?"

"You know the way to my heart, Ghanima," Tyler joshed, and looked over the group for a long moment. "You, hiding in the back, and you by the padding. And both of you. And that makes five sets. Go forth and punch."

"Please, did you see me last week?" Jen laughed, but couldn't help adding, "Watch your shoulder a little more carefully when you do that."

Dinah got up, checking her arm positions, and said, "The left one, yeah? And I was kind of busy pretending to drown in the ball-pit. I thought I saw you being shooty-girl, though." She tried again, this time with her shoulders more straight, and grinned as she came up back to standing. "That is so fun."

"With a remote control strapped to my arm," Jen said with a roll of her eyes. "Nice, that's way better. How've you been doing at this so far?"

Snickering at the mention of the remote, Dinah said, "Pretty well. I mean, I still lost to Mr. Durden my first week, but I felt like I held my own for most of it. He's got a deadly left hook, watch it if you ever face him. And it's definitely better than just hoping someone will show up at the gym while I happen to be there."

"I need to come down and find you there again sometime," Jen decided. With graduation looming closer, she felt more than a little responsible for the younger fighters of Fandom, the way Alex had been for her at the TF Academy. "It'll be good for both of us."

She filed the information about Tyler away, into the honestly quite scary mental Rolodex inside her brain. "I'll keep that in mind, thanks. And hey, holding your own isn't a bad thing. Sometimes it's all you can do until you get the giant robot out."

Beat.

"Not that you necessarily have . . . okay, my strategies don't always work for everyone."

"Giant. Robot." Dinah paused, thinking about it, then grinned. "How awesome is that?!"

Jen burst out laughing, with a lot less restraint than she used to exercise. "How did I know you would say that?"

"It's a giant rooooobot!" Dinah said, as gleeful on that idea as she had been on the chronomorpher. "I want one of those, c'mon!" She sighed. "Although if we had one in New Gotham, someone would probably just steal it and start robbing banks with it."

"And that," Jen said, tapping her Chronomorpher, "is exactly why they're keyed to these, and these are keyed to our DNA."

"Ahhh," Dinah said, leaning forward and giving it an extra-interested look. "And you got yours when you were at the future Academy? Like those two cadets from CopCon?"

"No, I didn't get mine until I got to the year 2000. After Alex died," Jen said, and a slight flicker of doubt across her face was the only visible reaction to the statement. "Plus our Time Flyers were stored in the year 3000, and they'd send them to us through a vortex when we needed them. There was that whole incident with the invasion of bears and the furniture Zord, though . . ."

"Furniture waaaah?" Dinah asked, blinking. "Bear invasion? Um. Okay, you lost me. What's a Time Flyer? Do you still have one of those?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Technically, yeah. But that'd mean calling back to HQ for it and that can't really happen. Still a long story." Jen shrugged. "Besides which, it's not much good without the other four, and Wes is in . . . god, it must be 2002 for him right now, and the other three are back in 3002, so . . . the Time Force Megazord is pretty much out of commission."

It was a pretty disjointed explanation, and she wasn't really sure she wanted to be more detailed. "And last year, there was an . . . invasion. Of armed bears. They formed a giant bear, and some of us ended up getting these Allen wrenches and IKEA morphers and . . . forming . . . a giant . . . furniture Megazord . . . to take it out."

If it said anything about what Jen's life was like, the only reason she was hesitating over the words was -- seriously, furniture?

Dinah stared at her. And stared. Then stared some more.

"Seriously." Which was all she could come up with. Because sometimes crime in New Gotham got weird, but not this weird. "Okaaaay then. Was Wes, am I remembering this right, was he the one who helped tutor you in fighting?"

"No, that was Alex," Jen answered, one corner of her mouth quirking up. "Welcome to my life, Dinah. It doesn't make any more sense from here."
