Drinking!

So, it hadn't exactly been the most exciting fight ever (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/3853444.html?thread=159461764#t159461764), but that was no reason to call in for victory (or, well, sympathy) drinks, and Daisy couldn't help chuckling a little in retrospect as she and Nathan relocated to the bar a little early from the gym. "So," she asked, "what's your poison?"

"Whiskey," came the easy reply. Nathan didn't have to think on that answer, really. He was in a bar. Whiskey was the drink of choice, always. "Please. All the better to nurse my bruised pride with, of course."

His pride wasn't all that bruised. Perhaps she could tell by the way he was chuckling himself as he said that.

Yeah. Tino was practically already getting the 'usuals' together the moment they walked in. "We need to get you a straw?" Daisy asked, unable to help herself. "To help you out with that?"

And that earned a laugh. Which, in retrospect, wasn't the greatest for the split in his lip, but the whiskey was bound to be a hell of a lot worse and Nathan knew it.

"I'm quite certain that I can manage," he decided. "But I'm touched by your concern, really."

"It's the least I can do," said Daisy, placing a hand over her bleeding heart, "all things considered."

"We can always blame Tyler," Nathan pointed out, not unpleasantly, "for all of those things being considered. I wonder what he'd make of it when he gets the bill for the straw in his mail."

And now he was half-tempted to send him one. For a straw. That was what, a penny?

"Oh!" Daisy laughed. "Tino'd never dream of charging me for a straw. An umbrella, maybe, but never a straw. He gets far too much business from me."

There was a pause.

"Of course, we could ask him to charge it, anyway."

"We ought to," Nathan decided. "Have him ring it up separately. Request a receipt. You can't bill a man for a straw if you don't keep the bill, after all."

Oh, yes. That would certainly teach Tyler. That would teach him, indeed.

Oh, indeed.

In fact, Daisy wouldn't mind at all if the only thing it taught Tyler was to put her and Nathan together more often; she was rather enjoying the results of the match so far.

"You hear that, Tino, love? Get the man a whiskey, a straw, and a receipt. And you know mine, just keep it light."

She gave Nathan a rueful smile. "Work in the morning."

"One thing I can say in favor of being a teacher around here," Nathan mused, "is that it grants me plenty of time off. I might take to supervising more extracurricular activities in the future, if only to keep me busy."

Heaven forbid he actually work more than one day a week, after all.

Oh, yes; couldn't have that.

"Oh! That does remind me....I've got to ask Coop about needing a day off in the future." Daisy preened a little. "I've signed up to run a workshop over the summer."

Because, heaven forbid, she only work one job this summer, after all.

"Ah, another innocent victim, lost to the shady business of filling impressionable young minds with knowledge." Nathan nodded to Tino as a receipt and a straw were presented to him, grinning still. "What were you looking into teaching, may I ask?"

"Oh, just a little course on healthy eating," said Daisy, with a dismissive shrug. "Really, it's rubbish what the majority of people around here eat. Coop suggested I teach something on what I do at that station, all the encoding and fraud tracking, but I just can't. I'm too worried someone's going to take that and try to use it for evil, not for good. You can't go evil with healthy living. No matter what some people say."

"There's certainly nothing the matter with remaining at least a little health conscious," Algren, of all people, agreed, lifting his glass of rather unhealthy whiskey and grinning ever so slightly. "And any course with food involved is bound to be a popular one, I imagine. There are enough students out there looking for easy credits through their stomach, after all."

"Hopefully not too many," Daisy said, wrinkling her nose a little. "Maybe I put the word 'granola' or 'tofu' in the description enough, it'll stave off numbers too high. I've never really taught before."

"Neither have I," Nathan noted. "And I say that after a semester of rambling on about American History to a classroom full of bored high school kids. This is the summer, if you're going to teach a class, you might as well have fun with it. Don't let the numbers turn you off too much."

"And," Daisy offered, "if anything does go wrong, I'm very highly trained in emergency procedures."

"You'll have your entire class using drinking straws in no time, I'm certain." Nathan couldn't have resisted saying that even if he had thought to try. He chuckled a little, lifted the straw to his forehead in a weird little salute, and then dropped it into his glass.

If they were going to be billing Tyler for it, he was going to use the thing.

"Using straws?" asked Daisy. "Bless, I didn't know we could hit students. That just puts a whole new spin on it."

"Really, it just makes healthy living that much more interesting, doesn't it?" Nathan gave his whiskey a bit of a stir, and then had himself a sip of it through the aforementioned straw.

It really wasn't quite the same, when he drank it like that.

"Nothing says 'health conscious' like a food fight that ends in black eyes and stitches, really."
