Iced tea, fruit salad and the World Series of Poker was Rusty's idea of a perfect way to spend a relaxing day.

He'd share if anyone stopped by. And he'd even work if his tenants or future tenants needed him.

A slightly scruffy-looking man with dark hair and blue-grey eyes walked into the lobby and headed for the front desk. "I'm looking for someone in charge. I'm guessing that's you," he said to Rusty.

"Yup, that's me," Rusty confirmed, taking in the man's scruffy appearance. "You lookin' to rent an apartment?"

Samuel smiled. "I am indeed. Dr. Samuel Cornick." He offered his hand. "I don't suppose you have any available at the moment?"

Rusty shook his hand. "Rusty Ryan. And I have several available. All one bedroom. One of them has a study. Do you have a preference?"

He pulled out the floor plans to show the man.

Samuel looked at the floor plans and said incredulously, "Bedroom of happy?"

"I didn't name them," Rusty said with a shrug. "Inherited them when I bought the place."

"Well," Samuel said. "How can I not want to live somewhere with a Bedroom of Happy? I'll take that one."

Rusty grinned and quoted him the monthly rent. "You need any help moving in?"

Samuel nodded and pulled out his checkbook to write a check for the first month's rent. "No, everything I brought is in my car at the moment. I've been driving since Washington state. So I will need advice on where to buy furniture around here." He flashed a grin at Rusty. "I don't mind sleeping on the floor, but if I can help it I'd rather not."

"There's probably a few ~~handwavy~~ pieces left in the apartment," Rusty said. "But you'll have to go to the mainland or order other furniture online. We have a general store that should have pretty much anything else you need."

He dug out a business card. "Here's the number for the rickshaw place. They'll help you haul your stuff from the parking lot to the building."

Samuel blinked. "Rickshaws?" He thought about it for a moment, then said, "Well, I guess it makes sense, actually, with the no motor traffic and all. Thanks." He was sure he could manage on his own, but the number might come in handy later.

"And listen," Rusty said, his tone hesitant. "This place is... kind of odd sometimes. Just so you know."

Samuel's grin got bigger. "I know. It's why I decided to stop driving here. Should be interesting." He knew it would be. He just hoped he'd find it so.

"All right, at least you have an idea of what you're in for," Rusty said. "You got a job lined up yet? There's a clinic here in town."

"I was going to inquire with them," Samuel said. "If it doesn't work out I'm sure I can figure something out. I worked at a gas station while I was waiting to get my license to practice in Washington." He hesitated. "Listen, I'm a werewolf. I figure it'd come out eventually," since his dad was probably going to use Samuel's newfound proximity to DC to make him his new poster boy, "and I don't want any trouble, so if you don't want to rent to me you can rip up my check now and I'll head on out."

Rusty stared at him for a long moment.

"You gonna eat myself or the other tenants?"

"I have never eaten anyone in my life," Samuel said honestly, "and I don't see any reason to start now."

"Then I don't see us having any problems," Rusty said.

"Well, okay then." Samuel's grin was back. "Pleasure doing business with you, Rusty Ryan."

"Likewise, Dr. Cormick," Rusty replied.

"It's--never mind," Samuel said. Close enough. "I'll see you around." With a little wave, he turned and headed for the door.
